Jim Besser Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 (edited) Well, another tie. I hate ties. Since I haven't announced a procedure for breaking ties, we'll do another month with two tunes. But I don't want to do this on a regular basis, so in the future we'll do this: I'll take the total number of votes (including 'null' votes.). If the number is even, we'll do the first of the tied tunes (in the order on the poll). If even, we'll do the second tune. And let's hope we don't have any 3 way ties! But for this month, we'll do two, and good tunes they are. First is 'All of Me," the jazz/pop standard by Gerald Marks and Seymour Simons. Here's some notation to get you started: http://www.jazz-styles.com/htm/scores/all-of-me.htm http://chartbaron.wordpress.com/2012/02/24/all-of-me-lead-sheet-with-new-harmonisation/. And here, once again, are some samples of this wonderful song: The glorious Billie Holiday version: and a very mellow instrumental version: And an uptempo version on chromatic button accordion: Mostly we aren't jazz musicians here on c.net, but this is a great tune to serve as an introduction to playing this genre. The basic tune is easy, but there's a lot you can do with it. Remember: there's no 'right' way to play All of Me. Figure out what works for you and let's hear it! The second September tune is 'Girl in Clover.' Suggested by our own Tallship, this cool tune is in 12/8. It's been discussed on melodeon.net, and nobody is really sure of its provenance. Here's a version of the tune with just a touch of jazz inflection by the excellent melodeon player Martin Ellison: Here's some ABC notation for you, thanks to Anahata over on Melnet: X:1T: Girl in CloverZ: Anahata <anahata@treewind.co.uk> from Martin Ellison on YouTubeN: Martin got it from the playing of Max Collie's Rhythm AcesM: 12/8L: 1/8Q:3/8=95K:GB2c |"G" d3-dcB "Em"A2B3d| "C"e3-e2{fe}d "D"A3-A2d |\"G"d3-dcB "Em"ABG3e | "D"d3 "A"^c3 "D"d3-d2 B |"G"B3-BAG "Bm"D3-D2D |"C"G3-GBd "Am7"c3-c2B |\"G"B2G3G G2A B2G |"Am7"A3-"D"A3 "G"G3-G2 :|| | "G"d3-dBG "Em"e2e3B | "Am7"A3-A2E "D"F2F3d |\"G"d3-dBG "Em"e3-e2A | "A"^c2eg2e "D"f2d3B |"G"B3-BAG "Bm"D3-D2D |"G"G3-GDG "Am7"A3-AGA |\"G"B2G3G G2AB2G | "Am7"A3 "D"A3 "G"G3-G2 :| And if you don't do ABC, attached is a PDF from the same source. cboody Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 (edited) Here's a slight edit of the abc to make the rhythms look like 12/8 all the way through, and to get the rhythms correct on the first repeat. A bit pedantic, but perhaps useful to some. In passing my take on this from listening is that it is not really in 12/8 at all but rather in the swung rhythm of much popular music. that's what I get out of the video too. alex_holden Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 Does Girl in Clover go by any alternative titles? It seems surprising to me that there's only one recording of it on YouTube.
Jim Besser Posted September 3, 2014 Author Posted September 3, 2014 Tonight The Squeezers took a crack at All of Me. English concertina (Randy Stein), Anglo concertina (me), G/d melodeon (Gus Voorhees). Still have work to do to get it all together, but it's getting there! https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/68325595/AllOfMeSept2.MP3
Sarah Swett Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 That was fabulous, Jim and Randy! What a pleasure. Sadly, I won't be at NESI this year but I'm working on very simple version of All Of Me using the music Randy gave us in his fabulous jazz workshop last year. I will pretend hard that this TOTM is merely a continuation of last year's wonderful weekend at Chimney Corners. Sarah p.s. The drop box system works very nicely, too.
Jim Besser Posted September 11, 2014 Author Posted September 11, 2014 I started out not liking Girl in Clover very much - I put it in the poll at another c.netter's suggestion. But the more I played it, the more I liked it. Input on how to make this better welcome. Played on a 30 button G/D Jeffries. Recorded on a Zoom H2n https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/68325595/C.net%20Tune%20of%20the%20Month/GirlCloverBesser.MP3
tona Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 (edited) Just for once a multi-tracked version of all of me. Rythmic with the baritone and melody with the treble. https://soundcloud.com/thoon-1/all-of-me-2 Edited September 15, 2014 by tona

Geoff Wooff Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Salut Toma, a great rendition to brighten up a cool monday morning !! Chapeau !! Geoff.

tona Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 Thanks to all. I tried to play a "gypsy" accompaniment... By the way the links to the notation of all of me in the first post are very complicated about chords. Here is a link to a video with a play along in gypsy style for training and with an harmonic sequence more simple. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKShfGdBlII So the second tune... So much different... A tune difficult to find its groove or its mood... I tried finally to play it in ballad style or a lullaby... https://soundcloud.com/thoon-1/girl-in-clover
Wolf Molkentin Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 (edited) Beautiful, Thomas! As the link didn't work for me, I think I'd provide this one. Best wishes - Wolf Edit: doesn't work either - ?? Edited September 18, 2014 by blue eyed sailor

Not easy to replicate on a 30 button Anglo, but a lot of ideas to inform my own playing of this tune. Thanks.

I am going to work on it even though I will not get it finished before the Sept is over. It is a difficult tune to get the flow of and you did it beautifully.
Daria Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 OK, this is the " TOTM not, concertina not'. Tune has been stuck in my head and I needed to release it from my musical "to do" list, and my concertina is at the shop getting fixed. Hope no one minds, this month only, a hammered dulcimer fill in. https://soundcloud.com/ariaqueezehammer/girl-in-clover-1
