  1. Good on you, Theo! I hope that they do you well.
  2. Dirge, I haven't found too many popular song books in the US that include Jerusalem ... at least not this version. Simon, thanks for the background information. My music history educatoin got a bit fragmented around Wagner, in part because I wasn't too interested in playing Bartok, Stravinski, etc. So i"m just now coming back around to the 1880 - period. Lots of fascinating things out there yet ... such as Holst using a national hymn for the Jupiter movement of The Planets.
  3. Thanks, Leo. I don't think it's the same piece. Here's a link to what I'm thinking of: If I get to Manchester this year, I need to get Marc Elder's autograph. Or at least meet him.
  4. Does anyone have an arrangement of Jerusalem that would be good for the duet? I find myself playing my 2006 "Final Night of the Proms" youtube videos and really like that particular piece. Besides, wasn't there a thread earlier in the year about concertinas at the proms in 2010?
  5. I'm thinking that if you have a concertina to play, you'll have a happy new year. It may not be world peace yet, but I'm voting for world squeeze!!!
  6. Natural Druid, There you go ... if you're looking for a Lachenal Anglo. Greg worked on my English that you'd asked about as well. Either way, you're in great hands regarding repair and refurbishment work!
  7. Here is a fingering chart that Button Box sent me. I hope it helps.
  8. As I'd said, "lucky girl, that friend of yours!" She'll find lots of good counsel here. Also with the WCCP!
  9. So, I have to ask the question ... who was putting on this recital? It's a strange thing but I played a bit of harp in college. My ex-fiance (a long time ago) is now in the Orlando area and teaching harp there. We've had a bit of correspondence recently since I decided to take the harp up again, in additon to my concertina and melodeion activities. I'd hope that she wasn't involved in causing you any issues. Curious how these things happen.
  10. Pictures as promised. I'll also throw in a Hardigg Storm Case (Model 1075, I think) for $25 with the concertina. Not for sale seperately!
  11. Why not use a bit of the money to pay for an outing to a good music shop to try out a couple of different concertinas? Or, since you're in Cornwall, I'd imagine you could contact the WCCP for advice and assistance. (Saw them mentioned in a previous thread, REALLY NICE PEOPLE!), A good side-by-side comparison would be most useful for your friend. Be prepared for a possible change of direction as she begins to play, though. That said, as I started on a Jack, I'd say a Jackie is a good choice ... well, until you get to needing a lot of accidentals. Lucky girl, that friend of yours!!!
  12. I'm selling my brass-reeded Lachenal English Concertina. Treble range (g-2 to c3), Rosewood ends, 48-bone buttons, 5 fold bellows, new thumb straps, just tuned and serviced by Greg Jowaisas, new ButtonBox blocked hard case. Pictures to follow tomorrow. I will gladly share the repair receipts with serious suitors. Reason for selling ... I need to devote more time to my Cranes. This two-handed playing is not for the faint of heart ... ... and other emotions not readily available in this venue! $800 - buyer pays shipping - donation WILL be made to c.net. PM me if you're interested.
  13. Did they ever make minature Cranes? Or maybe Crabb did?
  14. The one that I remember is: Mardon me padam, this pie is occupewed. May I sew you to another sheet? He also makes many references to beery-wenches ... but we don't pub-crawl and tell, do we?
  15. I thought Constantina was that city in Turkey where everyone play bodhrans
  16. Mick, if you could find out how many rows the buttons are in, that would help. But 30 TOTAL keys? That sounds like an odd duck ... no Crane references implied
  17. Catty, I'm pretty smitten with my Crane duets but will admit that picking up the EC is still lots of fun ...even with the pinkie rests intact. Sets my Crane progress back every time, though. Then again, so do the melodeons and the bandoneon. Fun to take one tune and play it on a series of instruments. But I digress ....
  18. Yote, I hadn't been following the thread but are you looking at EC? If so, I have a nice brass-reeded Lachenal that Greg Jowaisas just went over. It's got a new ButtonBox case and has been tuned. PM me if you're interested. The price is under $1000.
  19. When I bought my two Cranes from Chris Algar, I ended up paying an extra $150 each for the combination of customs and UPS handling fees. On the other hand, I got them in three days from the UK which is great service. I haven't had a ship-by-post experience to comment on. Max value here was $5,000.
  20. It says it's in a wheatstone box. I'd be interested as well. Have to see how to bid ...
  21. I'll add my voice to the request. Can be helpful when buying and selling as well. Although, you can put your location in the signature file ... ... since I just noticed that I had mine there. Barmaid ...more coffee here!!!!
  22. Yote, We're all there once, so you needn't worry. You'll get a number of good opinions on this forum, as well as the smells that go along with them . I'd vote for a Concertina Connection instrument. Of course, I didn't look to see where you're from so the price may be higher if you have VAT to deal with. But for a beginner instrument, especially if you buy from a dealer who will take it back on an upgrade, it's a good option. My Jack Barition was a really nice EC. No beginner crane duets though ... but that's another story. Make sure to do a search on your question because there are other threads of a similar nature here. Good luck!
  23. And I appreciate both of your responses. I know that there's a site that you can search for an print the tunes from. I guess I'm just a fan of printed music so I'll trust Google translator and see if I can order from the site that Jim referenced.
  24. Does anyone know where I might order a copy of the 358 Danish Folkdances ... other than the Danish site? Also, should I order just the Violin 1 books? Thanks for any advice!
