CD Baby

Recommended Posts

I just ordered the two Jody Kruskal CDs from "CD Baby".

Here is the confirmation e-mail I received.

Now i'm wondering if I will ever receive these CDs

Your CDs have been gently taken from our CD Baby shelves with

sterilized contamination-free gloves and placed onto a satin pillow.

A team of 50 employees inspected your CDs and polished them to make

sure they were in the best possible condition before mailing.

Our packing specialist from Japan lit a candle and a hush fell over

the crowd as he put your CDs into the finest gold-lined box that money

can buy.

We all had a wonderful celebration afterwards and the whole party

marched down the street to the post office where the entire town of

Portland waved "Bon Voyage!" to your package, on its way to you, in

our private CD Baby jet on this day, Saturday, January 17th.

I hope you had a wonderful time shopping at CD Baby. We sure did. Your picture is on our wall as "Customer of the Year." We're all

exhausted but can't wait for you to come back to CDBABY.COM!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Sigh...

David, I have bought numerous CDs from CD Baby & also downoaded quite a few, including numerous Old Time CDs that are just not available over here.

There service has always been EXCELLENT so I would have no hesitation in recommending them.

The Postie might even have been instructed to kiss your cheek as he delivers them!

But seriously, I'll be astonished if you are not absolutely delighted with their service & go on to use them again & again.

Cheers

Dick

It's humour ;) and completely trustworthy.

I agree; they are straight as a die. They appeal to me because they are run by musicians and anyone who sells through them will confirm that they are treated in a way unusually fair for the music business, which is one of the most corrupt that exists.

Americans sometimes seem to use humour or informality in situations where Europeans might think it inappropriate.

For my work I use an American web-based real estate database, and when I log out it says "Thanks a bunch for using [the product name]". To them I imagine this informality conveys friendliness and approachability, but to me it comes across as unprofessional. Perhaps I'm just an uptight Brit :)

No doubt CD Baby's response was intended to give a similar impression of their operation.

What do you expect from us folks in the NW U.S.? "It's casual." Most everyone wears sandals (without socks) to work from Spring through early winter..

Well, I'm American, and I too thought the CD Baby language a bit odd when I first saw it. But I've now purchased several CDs from them and the service has always been excellent.

Maybe a little heavy-handed on the humor...

I'd say a little heavy on the sarcasm. But, if it's a business operated by musicians--as was mentioned, it's likely to deviate from the norm in certain respects...and with a good bit of pot-smoking going on. Don't worry David--even stoners can be very efficient packers/shippers; if they get your shipping address correct, it should be no problem..

Hey David, if those stoners really have put the wrong shipping address on your package .... I hope it's mine!

  • 2 weeks later...

I was beginning to fuminate about the ineficiency of french posts,

but the two CDs eventually arrived (after more than two weeks).

The only disapointment is the absence of the promised golden box ;)

I've not yet had time to listen fully to them but I can already precict

they'll both stay close to my CD driver for a long time.

Dang you Uptight Brits and your non-senses of humor! Or humour!

Need to send Hugh Laurie over to your place right away, but he's too busy playing an American on TV. ;)

Hi David,

What a relief! I was beginning to wonder if I would have to hand deliver them to you myself! I hope you enjoy the CDs David.

My opinion as a casual American is that the language is way overboard on sarcasm. I would even go so far as to call it unprofessional. However, I get a good chuckle imagining all the employees coughing and wheezing in the shipping room and laughing uncontrollably over the hilarity of their writings... Still, to an outsider, I'd say the writing is potentially offensive (or at least alienating) to most. In the last ten years there has been a HUGE wave of sarcasm in the evolution of America's collective sense of humor. So much so that I often feel I was born in the wrong century.
