Anyone Going To The North-east Squeeze-in?

Hi, at short notice I am crossing the Atlantic to attend the Northeast Squeeze in.I am a Crane duet player ( folk plus specialising in songs of the 1920's and 30's)I may be kicking around Boston on the Thursday before the Squeeze-in...also the Monday after .. Does anyone know of any folk/ acoustic music sessions happening in or around Boston at that time.Also - although I can hire a car - any chance of a

lift from Boston to the Squeeze-in on Fri, Sep 17 .Would it be easy to do it by public transport ?Any other duet players out there who are going.I know of at least one other Crane enthusiast.

There's an Irish session Sunday evening in Greenfield and a contra (Irish, Quebecois, English, etc.) session in Montague Monday evening. Either is reasonably on the way back from the S-I to Boston (though not by bus).

 

The easiest public transport service is probably by Peter Pan Bus which takes about 2 1/2 hours and costs $27 one way between Boston and Northampton. Unfortunately Northampton is still about 45 minutes away, but a bunch of us go through there to the S-I and could give you a ride to/from.

 

There are a couple of other closer bus destinations (to within 20 minutes of the S-I but they are much smaller towns, the busses run much less frequently, take unrespectively longer, and cost considerably more. Plus, unless you were able to hook up with someone coming through there, a 20-minute taxi ride would be pretty pricy!

 

You could also check in with the Button Box as they'll know who'll be going from the Boston area.

 

Oh yeah, and I play duet (Hayden)....

Rich Morse and I play Hayden Duet and will be there. There are often one or two others. David Cornell is usually there with his Maccann duet. Occasionally someone brings a Crane, but not consistantly.

I have no idea what instruments I will bring. Something, I'm sure. Probably my Morse and my Kensington (both C/G anglos) and maybe a button box or two to sell off.

 

Oh, and do this old dumb-dumb a favor and reintroduce yourself even if we have met before. Everyone remembers me as the Wizard behind the curtain (or the wicked witch) but all of you are nice so I don't remember you (huh? What did I just say?).

Actually, I do most of my Button Box work from my home office, so anyone wanting sales, repairs, squeeze-in registration, etc. help needs to contact our store as that's where our database is (as well as our helpful staff!). About the only help I can provide from here is some informational stuff.

I've been wondering what workshops I would like to attend at the squeeze-in and since they are negotiated when we all arrive I was wondering what suggestions there might be. Here are a few ideas I've had so far:

 

playing fast - how to skip most of the notes and still keep the spirit of the tune alive

playing chords on an English - how to incorporate them into a tune

oramentation 101 - English concertina

 

and of course from a related thread

 

waltz composition workshop!

 

any other ideas/comments?

I may have a volunteer chaperone already, but just in case I do not, would any of you like to tote one of my instruments around for the weekend?

Are these workshops you want to teach? If so, you just put them on the board when you arrive.

 

If you want someone to teach them, you need to find a willing teacher and a time slot when they are free. Last year no one had an intro to anglo session down and there were requests for one, so I finally threw one together, although I'm hardly the best teacher for that.

 

It may be interesting this year...I'm not we have ever had so many sessions set up in advance for the few dozen slots...spontaneity is part of the fun, and something tells me there will still be a lot of that too. See you then.

 

Bob, I'm willing to babysit again if no one else has volunteered, write me off bbs. We will miss you at the maker's forum.

Sadly I don't think I'm qualified to teach a workshop yet - only been playing the concertina for a few months. I wasn't sure how things work at the squeeze-in but you've made it quite a bit clearer. I'd definitely be interested if someone else wanted to teach one of the potential workshops I posted

I usually do workshops on Morris Tunes and The "abc's" of abc (the music notation protocol used in the Tune-O-Tron and many other places). No promises, though.

 

As far as the "how do we all find each other" question goes, I have made up a name tag that I will wear (in addition to the official Squeeze-In name button we will all get) that looks like this (see below). See you there.
