Chuck, I've double checked bar 9 and it is as printed in the book. I've had to correct a couple of bars in one tune where the bar was overful in one voice (that'll teach them to use 32nd notes or demisemiquavers as we like to call them over here!) but I generally leave the pitch alone unless there's a glaringly obvious mistake. When I get chance I'll scan the section in question and email it to you.

I have uploaded two versions of the audio file for Bonnie Charlie's Now Awa', one at the 110bpm in your .abc file and another at 70bpm.

110bps sounds way too fast to me. I know that pipers play it in quick march time, but singers mostly sing it andante and this arrangement sounds more song-like to me. Even the Clancy Brothers sing it at about this tempo!

Waiting for Jack Campin to give us the definitive tempo...

Bonnie Charlie's Now Awa' is one of the stock songs that were taught at primary school in Scotland in the 1950's. Usually written with the Scots dialect spelling "Noo", even in a time when most people did not say it that way. The way we got it in school turned me off that and other songs. Now years later, I have found a few of them I actually like. Some make good tunes when you take the words away!

Very likely. A lot of people heard them as songs first. They put me off when I was learning an instrument much later, and at first, did not want to try these song/tunes.

For an interesting story, Google 'Mad Jack Churchill':

"In May of 1944, he led the attack on the German held island of Brač. The landing was unopposed and the main assault was put off until the next day. Churchill led a force of Commandos against gun emplacements just off the beaches. Only seven members of the force made it.

As the Germans advanced to retake the guns, "Mad Jack" played “Will Ye No Come Back Again” on the bagpipes. After intense fighting, where he was the only survivor, he was captured and sent to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp."

 

“Will Ye No Come Back Again” is the another title for "Bonnie Charlie's Now Awa' "

 

Mad Jack was an amazing character and it is worth reading about him. In WWII he led his men into battle hefting a Claymore sword, an English long bow and Highland pipes. He used all three items plus other more modern weaponry. I can't even imagine carrying all that stuff.

Wowzer! I am a complete beginner. NO MUSICAL Experience. But I am loving Concertina. Also abc notation really helps me but I have so much to learn. It is wonderful to find folks that will help. Thank you

Forgot my original question in my enthusiasm. Is there a place I could find a Wheatstone layout button diagram that would show abc notation, i.e. Show where b or g are instead of B and G?

I could do this for English system but not anglo (well not straight off I'd have to figure out the notes on a Wheatstone/Lachenal anglo first!) but no doubt someone will chip in and help before long. If it helps, in ABC 'C' is middle C (C3), the one below the staff in treble clef. 'c' is in third space up from the bottom.
