Jody Kruskal Posted June 27, 2014 Posted June 27, 2014 (edited) I’ve been watching and listening to a brilliant Maccann player and video artist on youtube who goes by the name of JONATHAN BADNESS. He presents a dark, surreal world, mostly in black and white, starring himself, his daughter Poppy and her stuffed animals. He’s a clown with a gentle sadness reminiscent of Charlie Chaplin and a childish absurdist wit that reminds me of Lewis Carroll. His great atmospheric playing is not distracted by any spoken words, but there is lots of text and dialogue to read. All 30 of his videos are here on his channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvRTuJRkhauWTmnXD2uDi-g/videos If you like his brilliant work as much as I do, please comment on youtube. I think he needs encouragement... not very many views. Here are a few of my favorites. Łukasz Martynowicz Posted June 27, 2014 Posted June 27, 2014 (edited) That is something I call "the edge of the internets"… and is absolutely brilliant! Thanks for sharing! Edited June 27, 2014 by Łukasz Martynowicz
Lakeman Posted June 27, 2014 Posted June 27, 2014 Hi Jody - I'd already discovered this unique guy on the net. I'm surprised too that he is not better known . His combined use of clowning, concertina-playing, text and crude, but effective, animation is almost an original art form in itself. I am sure if he entered one of his " shorts" into a film festival somewhere he would get much wider recognition
jonathan badness Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 Cuckoo, my ears are burning (in a good way). Im Jonathan badness and would like thanks you for all your kind words and encouragment. It really means alot. I just uploaded an album to soundcloud. theres 18 solo concertina pieces (mostly from my films) all free to download. hope you like them and thanks again. xxx https://soundcloud.com/jonathan-badness/sets/jonathanbadness-huntergatherer
Wolf Molkentin Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 That's terrific, Jonathan - commented on your SC.... Best wishes - Wolf
Stefan Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 Brilliant Jonathan, the music and the videos too!
jonathan badness Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 cheers guys. I just turned 41 last month and had one of those evenings when i thought maybe i was wasting my time with the videos and stuff and just by chance saw this thread. Its really cheered me up. thanks again
Jody Kruskal Posted August 22, 2014 Author Posted August 22, 2014 Hi Jonathan, Congratulations on your birthday. Is there any way to get alerts about new vids you make? I think I've watched them all but I'm not sure.
jonathan badness Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 cheers jody, Im not sure how it works but i think i could send out a pm to all my youtube subscribers before each vid goes online. the last three vids have all been longer ones around 9 mins each. 'hearts of badness', the art of badness' and 'dying for badness'. not sure if the longer formats really working though
Jody Kruskal Posted August 29, 2014 Author Posted August 29, 2014 I just spent a delightful 1/2 hour exploring your deranged world. Thanks for inviting me into your mind. I like the longer format but I wish you would play more concertina and less... whatever those electronic repetitive sounds were. Don't take it to heart. Do your thing and never say never.
jonathan badness Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 The electronic stuff is a bit of a mystry to me too! Blame it on me buying a samsung tablet and having long train journeys to work. Dont worry im sure ill get it out my system sooner or later Im doing an electro pop album at the moment (definately a midlife crisis) and hopefully next month when its finished Ill get back to my maccann
StuartEstell Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 I did the same thing when I bought my MacBook in 2010, Jonathan - the first thing I recorded in GarageBand was an album of jingly-jangly indie guitar pop. Of course that should have got it out of my system but I'm sure I'll end up doing something similar again... Your Maccann stuff is great though - you have such a clearly-defined style. I look forward to hearing more.
jonathan badness Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 (edited) cheers stuart i love your playing too. I hoping to get another concertina album together over the next few months (tango). Heres a link to the latest video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnij3hPfv1g the concertina tunes are 'deep purple' and ' si tu savais' the video is about drunkeness.
