I’m after a metal-ended english concertina in unrestored condition, Wheatstone or Lachenal, steel reeds. I’m located in the UK. If anyone has something please send me a message. Thanks

Just for fun, and available through www.zazzle.com (search "Rollstonpress"), here are some concertina t-shirts for Wheatstone, Lachenal, and even one for Maccannics that even includes The Professor's visage and signature. While The Wife prefers name-brand stuff with logos, I'd much rather have something I'm interested in that's totally obscure and that no one has any idea what it is. And, if anyone would like to be a human billboard, there's also a Rollston Press shirt with a sampling of some of the book covers. The shirts are high quality print-on-demand, you decide what size and color, and Zazzle often puts things on 20-30% discount. Thanks to Steve Dickinson for permission to include the graphic from an old Wheatstone pricelist. And as they should, a portion of the proceeds will go to CNET. Gary

Hi there - my first post here after a few years' membership, but in unfortunate circumstances as I'd like to ask you good people to keep an eye open for my dad's Wheatstone Boyd English concertina which we hope is merely lost, to reappear soon, but fear may have been stolen. My dad's name is Michael Ratliff - some of you may know of him from various folk and traditional music circles in the North East of England over the past 60 years. He was attending Cambridge Folk Festival over the weekend and helping with the Northumbrian music workshops, which is why he had his instruments with him, and he set down the concertina (in a small flight case, itself in a blue rucksack) while helping my mam into a wheelchair at the end of Friday night; when he returned to where his stuff was it'd gone. They're now en route back to Newcastle having informed the festival organisers, the police, Chris Algar (from whom it was originally purchased, and who'll recognise it immediately if it should pop up), Alistair Anderson (an old friend, who's played this box many times and will also recognise it), and various others via word of mouth and social media. But no leads yet. The box is a Wheatstone Boyd English concertina, as pictured, in exceptionally good condition. I've never seen or heard another as good and - like any Boyd - it cuts through in a session and always makes its presence felt. My dad's still a gigging musician in his 70s, having started in his teens, so this box is not only his pride and joy but also his means to work, to fundraise for the local hospice with other Northumbrian musicians, and to run the Blue Bell session in Northumberland. I'll loan him my Lachenal Boyd in the meantime but, as anyone who's compared a Wheatstone and a Lachenal Boyd will know, it's not quite in the same league. We know the serial number, in case somebody comes across a suspect instrument and would like to check. It's only got its original 5-fold bellows but they've been well maintained. The veneer and metalwork is in very good nick, despite this photo not being great. I'll be happy to answer any questions anyone has, and thanks in advance for any help! Admin: if this isn't in the right place, apologies! I saw a lost/stolen thread but it's closed and I couldn't reply; perhaps this could be added to that?

WHEATSTONE AEOLA 81 KEY MACCANN DUET CONCERTINA S/N 35286 In great condition, fully playable and comes with the original Wheatstone box. The Wheatstone ledger (Ledger SD03, Page 037 - Serial No. 35277 to No. 35299) in the Horniman museum shows that this concertina dates to 1940. The eight-fold bellows are airtight and A is tuned to 440Hz. The following is an excerpt from "The History of The Duet Concertina". Many players became very proficient on the duet, notably Alexander Prince and Percy Honri. As the range of music increased so did the size of the instruments. Numbers such as the "Lost Chord" showed off the organ-like qualities of the duet, and Prince spent four years learning the complete overture to Tannhauser for which the 81 key duet was developed. Please see the accompanying pictures for more details. Should you have any questions then I will do my best to answer them. Worldwide shipping is available at cost subject to local customs restrictions / charges. Price £3,200 o.n.o.

I have for sale an unrestored concertina by Wheatstone with 57 metal buttons plus air button. It is a McCann duet. Located near Preston (FY8 3JD) it will need a full overhaul. The ends are raised ebony and there are no cracks to the fretwork. Looking for an offer around £1200. I prefer the buyer to come and inspect. Call Kevin on 07784 713 866

In view of the cool market for English concertinas right now, I am offering this one for the RED HOT PRICE of $2300! Such quality, for such a reasonable price... also still VERY willing to trade this for a Crane duet! Wheatstone Aeola English, 56+air button, extended treble, no. 36258, which puts its manufacture in the mid-1950’s if I’ve understood the ledgers correctly! Comes with its original case in good condition. Tight bellows, all reeds sound in both directions, only cosmetic issues are some surface checks from being in a dry environment, and some crushing around several screw holes where someone tightened them down too much. Basically immaculate, particularly the insides. A very loud box! Many other pictures/videos/sound files upon request. I’m located in central Virginia (USA). Prefer to ship in the US, but I’m willing to ship internationally if it comes to that. I’m also happy to meet someone working a few hours’ drive. $3000, buyer pays shipping. Also open to trading for Crane duet of similar quality/condition.

Wheatstone 56-key treble English system Aeola, with nickel-plated metal ends and ebony trim, #23111 and made about 1902. One of the earliest octagonal Aeolas, with the bell-shaped fretwork and red pads that are typical of the early metal-ended Wheatstones. Newly tuned to A-440. With its original black leather case.

I am selling my 4-CD set, “300 Gems of Irish Music for All Instruments,” for only $4.99 USD. See https://greylarsen.com/shop/product/300-gems-recordings-mp3s-or-set-of-4-cds/. This price is good through January 6, 2020. All my Irish music books and most of my CDs are also heavily discounted. For all the info, go to: https://greylarsen.com/webstore/holiday-cd-book-sale/. This audio collection is a companion to my book “300 Gems of Irish Music for All Instruments.” (See https://greylarsen.com/shop/product/300-gems-of-irish-music-for-all-instruments/). All 300 tunes are notated in the book. Free excerpts are available as PDF downloads (at http://greylarsen.com/webstore/books/). Many of the transcriptions pay homage to recordings by great musicians and groups such as Matt Molloy, Martin Hayes, Sharon Shannon, Mary Bergin, Kevin Burke, James Kelly, Willie Clancy, Altan, the Bothy Band and the Mulcahy Family, as well as early 20th century recordings from revered masters Michael Coleman, Paddy Killoran, Dennis Murphy, Bobby Casey, Paddy Canny and others. The tunes are notated in a style that makes them equally accessible to players of fiddle, flute, whistle, accordion, concertina, harp, keyboard, guitar, mandolin, banjo, uilleann pipes – to all melody players. I play the tunes on Irish flute, tin whistle, and 49 of the tunes on my Wheatstone 12-sided anglo concertina from the 1930s. This is an excellent resource for repertoire building and makes a nice gift. Also, I designed the tune sequence such that good medleys result when you play consecutive tunes one after another. (At least I think so.) To buy only the 49 concertina tunes, go here: https://greylarsen.com/shop/product/49-concertina-tunes-from-300-gems-of-irish-music-for-all-instruments/. For $9.99, you can get the same collection as 300 downloadable mp3s, and save shipping costs. This costs less than getting the CDs if you are in Canada, Mexico or outside of North America. The mp3s can be found here: https://greylarsen.com/shop/product/300-gems-recordings-mp3s-or-set-of-4-cds/. The CD set is so inexpensive because I have piles of them on my shelves! Time to move them out into the world. I make no profit at this price, but I have the pleasure of spreading the music around. Most of my CDs are also on sale at 40% off. And all my books are reduced as well. See https://greylarsen.com/webstore/holiday-cd-book-sale/. Thank you for your attention, and happy holidays! - Grey

For sale: Wheatstone 62-button Maccann duet concertina -- Serial # 35731 -- for sale at $2,850 or best offer, however, buyer must pay all shipping costs. http://www.horniman.info/DKNSARC/SD03/PAGES/D3P0560L.HTM Here is a general comment about this instrument by a professional concertina specialist: "(Regarding) the three buttons off to the left that are marked "BA", WH", and "WV". The WV button is standard - it's what most players call an air release, but Wheatstone referred to it as a "Wind Valve". The other two are novelty buttons which are uncommon on duet system concertinas; the WH is a bird whistle, and the BA is a baby cry (Wheatstone called this a "cock crow"). On the production records, this concertina is listed as a "SP (Special) Duet" with "bird & cock" pencilled in. Cool stuff for concertina geeks..." Please be aware that this belonged to our father who was a professional musician, however, we do not play the concertina. We have tried it, and to the best of our abilities that we can tell, it seems to be in full working order. However, you will be buying this instrument "AS IS" and it is not eligible for a refund. Here are some photos. If you would like to see more, please contact me privately at Michelenergy@yahoo.com or call me at (928) 554-5820 in the United States. Thank you again for your interest.

Good morning all from Dallas, Texas, I am a church musician and beginner English concertina player. Purchased a preowned Jackie last Christmas and have played it almost daily since then. I have been reading and researching on this site and learning from this community with much appreciation. I must confess that I'm beginning to think about purchasing that "next level" of English concertina. I've begun to focus on searching for a 48key treble Wheatstone or Lachenal english concertina in the range of $1,000-2000. (According to one site, that's 774-1548 GBP). I have not had an opportunity to play either instrument so I look forward to doing so. I'm going to be in Cambridge and Edinburgh in October and hope to be able to play some instruments. Two questions: 1. Are there significant differences in the Wheatstone and Lachenal instruments (touch, sound)? 2. If you have something for sale in the price range, will you private message me? Thank you in advance for your responses.

Hello concertina lovers, I am selling my Wheatstone Miniature Maccann Duet Concertina. I have a listing on ebay, check it out if you are interested. https://www.ebay.com/itm/302791718981?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1558.l2649 It is an amazing 12 keys Wheatstone Miniature Maccann Duet Concertina, serial number: 32154. From the serial number, we can estimate that it was made around 1929. It is in an incredible condition. All actions, pads, metal buttons, steel reeds and 8-fold bellows are impeccable. The metal ends are beautifully sculpted. It is "concert pitch" tuned and it sounds great. It is surprisingly powerful for the size (4.5 inches / 3 inches). I bought it from Chris Algar at Barleycorn Concertinas. It will come in the original box which is also in an amazing condition. If you have any questions or would like additional photos, don't hesitate to ask me.

My husband and I are interested in selling his grandfather's MacCann Duet. This C. Wheatstone ebony Aeola has 56 buttons, and ivory thumb rests. Metal rivet tags are also still in great condition. The piece was manufactured in London and was first sold December 22nd, 1922 according to the ledger on this link http://www.horniman.info/DKNSARC/SD01/PAGES/D1P1820S.HTM. The instrument also comes with it's original hard leather case. This instrument is playable out of the box but could use some TLC as some of the reeds seem to stick. Reasonable offers will be considered, but we are hoping around $2500. We are located in Maryland, USA, near Baltimore. I'd be willing to ship to any USA location with insurance. Outside the US would require more research. Thank You! Bryanna

I have a wheatestone C/G anglo with the standard 30-button layout on which I play primarily irish music. I have seen some discussion on modified/hybrid layouts for ITM, but they have all been focused on the mid-range, usually focusing the C#. I am getting fairly comfortable with the wheatstone system in this sense, but there is one thing that has continued to bug me. I would really like to have the D below middle C to throw in chords. As it is I can throw in a nice low G, A or E and even the odd C, but the one I would get the most use out of for irish music woudl be that D. Does anyone have experience modifying the layout in this range? Are there any particular issues one might run into or reason's not to do it. I realize that there could be some issues with differently sized reeds on the low end. Here is the mod that seems the most obvious to me. Remove the low F natural on the pull (top row, far left) and replace that with the low G. (That low F is probably my least used button on the left hand side anyways). Then replace the existing low G pull (Mid row, far left) with a low D pull. It seems like this should be fine space-wise as the G should be the same length or shorter than the F, and the D would be on the same as the low C, so there should be room for it. Plus I think it should only require one new reed since the low-G would just be moved. Moreover this layout seems like it would have nice options for a DA fifth and and an inverted GD fifth on the pull in that leftmost column, As well as a nice D octave combo in the middle row. The lowG-mid D pull that I currently use on the pull would be slightly more awkward, but not prohibatively so. I would love to know if anyone has advice regarding either the ease with which I can find someone who make such a modification (It is beyond my own tinkering ability and comfort) and also if anyone has other alternative layouts for the low range. I am not in any particular hurry, but I do think I will want to do it eventually, maybe once it is in need of a general tuneup. Of course the other option would be down the road to look for a different instrument with more than 30 buttons, but I have a bad habit of acquiring too many instruments as it is. Thank you.

Hello everyone, I have been asked by a friend of dear (and much missed) Vernon Barrett, to post this, as he has no internet access. I am not taking any commission or any money for posting this, but I hope that this beautiful instrument can find a new home and continue to make music. Vernon Barrett bought this very nice Wheatstone & Co McCann Duet in reasonable condition but in old philharmonic pitch and needing replacement bellows. As he wanted a wooden ended instrument, we made new ends finished in beautiful Amboyna wood with hand cut fretwork and with new boxwood button stems with genuine Wheatstone gold plated button caps( new from Harry Minting's Wheatstone parts stock). New bellows in dark green goatskin were made by Rosalie Dipper. The instrument is now tuned in modern A=440 Hz pitch. The instrument has been very carefully looked after by Vernon for the last thirteen years or so and is in "as-new" condition. The Amboyna veneers used were the largest and only veneers we have ever had like this, and so the instrument really is one of a kind. Realistically, if we were to make an exact copy of this instrument then I can't really see that we could break even on costs if we charged much under £10,000. (I heard on the radio today, that you could only just afford a bottle of single malt whisky for the same price - I know what I would chose!) Sadly, there is not that much demand for Duets, so I guess the price will be less than that. If you are interested, please contact me. Best wishes to all, and happy squeezing, John
