  1. Adrian, just "WOW" !! Fabulous. Your playing is wonderful and listening to that lovely bass line is pure pleasure. And I KNOW why you have that wry smile on your face as the last chord fades away to nothing..................you are still astonished by the tonal range of the anglo Colin Dipper created for you. I'll bet it thrills you each time you do it ! One question though...........the sound quality on my Youtube version is "meh". Is there a platform where we can hear it in high quality ? Bravo ! Robin
  2. Pah ! You guys have no idea what criticism is ! I've had to live with this for years................the look that says " In so many ways you've been a good master, but really............concertina ?" Robin
  3. Just finished a biography of the artist by Michael Holroyd. I ended up loathing the man but in his defence [ ] he was a concertina player. As a group, did we know this ? Robin
  4. As do Lee Valley in Canada. http://www.leevalley.com/en/home/Search.aspx?action=n
  5. WOW! I'm curious to know if the WOW! is for " seems like a lot" or "seems like good value for a good instrument"
  6. I was talking to Chris last week and I believe he is no longer in Stoke. Robin
  7. Hope Don is OK with me asking this question here ? By coincidence we were discussing modes at our English session in Cambridge , Ontario, yesterday and this question arose about the Sportsman's Hornpipe and we were stumped. I was going to post a question today so here goes. Using this tune as an example, is there straightforward way of figuring which mode you are in ? In spite of it's key signature it's not in Emin as it starts on a C and ends on an A....but the F# says it's not Amin.....where does that leave us? Robin Sportsman's Hornpipe.pdf
  8. I was really trying to make the point mu original post is in the "Buy & Sell " section .....
  9. Well done Jim...............more than "just giving it a whirl " I think. You've done some serious work on this tune!! I love the bass accompaniment; it's interesting. Thanks for posting Robin
  10. Thanks; really enjoyed all the tunes but was transported by the Shepherd's of Yarrow.....lovely duet ! I don't know Caledonian Pocket Companion 1750, with arrangement by Matt Seattle. Is this a published collection ? Thanks Robin
  11. I think that's why this story appealed to me so much ! It takes me back to charming times ( pre-penicillin and early death of course) when teenagers could rebel & strut their stuff playing loud music....................on a concertina!
  12. One chamber, yes. Geoff.....it centres on 440 but I can't tell you too much............I've never serially measured them but they are around -12 and +6. Thanks Pics today plus better videos.
  13. Thanks guys..it's OK on my original video on my PC so I don't know what has happened; I'll try uploading it again. Different concertina Don; Ian's is a Wheatstone.
  14. A wondrous instrument here......images below but a few videos first. https://soundcloud.com/the-harry-robinson/liberty-bell-march-on-crabb https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S95GjBQkS7w https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVM-DfmfIYM A 41 key double reeded English concertina. I don't as rule name my instruments but I've called this one "Big Red"....I've used it in sessions and it catches every-ones eye . I've found it a great session concertina, not because it is particularly loud but because it's tone is different from any other instrument and so is discernible. You don't need to play it loudly, just listen carefully. Nothing competes with 4 diatonic accordions etc, but in a balanced session you can hear this one. I've never had a problem with 41 keys for the English based repertoire I play. Lowest note G....highest note F Made in the 60's I believe; a set of three were made. One red, one white, one blue. In top condition.....bellows, frames reeds, pads great. I've just changed out all the valves. The valve frames are Dural ( I believe) so it is not a heavy instrument, I've played it standing up fine. Solid case. I paid £3000 but pre-negotiating here, I'll take £2750 plus shipping, insurance etc or US $ equivalent. If interested, I need payment when sale is agreed but I will probably be over in the UK in November and could deliver to a central point. Also to the Button Box area in May. Thanks for looking.....if seriously interested, more images available.
  15. Actually I've had an order in with Colin for for an F/C, 36 keys like my G/D and it is to be ready shortly. He's making two of them; one for another poster here. Intended for song accompaniment. But I was also in the right place, right time and right mind-set for a bass G/D anglo; an octave down from a standard G/D. It's hugely exciting and I will be posting when it comes. 36 keys again and should be an extra-ordinary concertina. Thanks for asking. Robin
  16. Lovely story, Chris. And with the photo graph, a real family treasure...............any ideas of the repertoire he played as he walked up and down Gravesend Prom ? Kind of like what birds are doing in the natural world at the moment; playing better and louder to impress women ! Robin
  17. Yep, thanks Jody; I hadn't discovered this listening and learning resource, and a resource it surely is. It's not easy to find recordings you are interested in and then be able to pause, slow etc to de-construct what is going on, and here especially with the solo concertina. You are in such a great position with your travelling to concertina events and your curiosity about other concertina players to do this for us..... Two things............I think that if anyone who listened to Jan Elliot did not know she was an English player, they would probably guess she played Anglo. She absolutely nails the spirit of the anglo but adds the fluidity an English enables. She has influenced me more than she knows in that listening to her play the English concertina for Morris is a lesson in how to play the Anglo for Morris. Second thing.....doesn't listening to Dave Prebble just fill you with the joy of owning and playing a concertina. I've never heard him play before but it just wants to make me go and practice. Thanks again,Jody..................Robin
