  1. Congrats to both of you on the new “tinas” Mike
  2. Thank you all for the thoughtful replies. This is my second try at the Anglo having failed miserably the first time. I have a much better instrument this time. When I decided to start up again, I didn’t consider other systems for no good reason. I think my plan is to attend the Noel Hill school next week and if that goes OK probably just keep on with the Anglo-maybe add in some pirate music for variety. If the school goes poorly, I may rent an English from the Button Box and see if I like that better. Thanks again for the replies. Mike
  3. I am sure I could get the answer to my question by spending a bunch of time searching around the web, but figured the expedient solution lay in the “expert” opinions I’d get here. I’ve started on the Anglo now for the second time in the hope of being able to play some tunes at an ITM session at some point. I’ve taken a few lessons and am attending the Noel Hill school next week. However, my learning seems to be paralleling other instruments I attempt to play (for example I’ve played mandolin for about 10 years and can only play one tune at session speed. At the tender age of 71, my fingers just are not as nimble as they used to be. So.......tempo is a big issue (I practice with a metronome). By tempo, I’m talking speed. Now for the question. If I regroup, and decide to just play at home for personal enjoyment (the main thing anyway as the local sessions occur 2-3 times a month), would I be better served switching to English, Duet, or another and what genres are those best suited, and which may be better for harmony/accompaniment? Hopefully this makes sense. Thanks, Mike
  4. Hey Lefty-See you there! Are you staying at the lodge?
  5. Please let us know when the re-print is available. Thanks!
  6. I am attending the “school” in Oregon the first part of August. I’ve only been playing for a few months, so I expect to be in the beginner group. Other than recording devices, any other pearls of wisdom from you prior attendees?
  7. Thanks. Doritos? Havent eaten any for a very long time. If I drink enough beer to spill it I cannot play, so not a problem there-lol. As an alternative to cleaning dust out of bellows with a cloth, I have found a shaving brush (without the lather) (dry) to work well - also good for dusting fret boards on stringed instruments. Thanks also to Don Taylor who sent me an Edgley manual!
  8. As a fairly new player of the Anglo concertina, a question has come to mind. Im sure I could search around and come up with an answer, but being lazy, I thought Id just ask here. Having played stringed instruments, I know they require routine maintenance to keep them in optimal playing condition. I have just acquired a nice used Edgley, I want to keep it in optimal condition. So is there normal preventive things I should do? Or is it normal to just play it until a malfunction then get it fixed? Thanks!
  9. I have a Rochelle for sale. Ive played it almost daily for about 3 months. Ive played several of these and this one seems to be less stiff than others. Great Anglo to get started with as reviewed on this site as well as several other sites. Can take photos if desired by serious potential buyers. Comes with gig bag. $375 shipped within the lower 48 (USA), or $350 plus actual shipping. PayPal preferred. Thanks!
  10. Edvsicek, glad you love your Rochelle. I currently play one too. But having played more advanced concertinas, I can tell you that you will advance faster on a better instrument. On another forum, the prevailing thought is to play the best instrument you can afford. I think that’s sage advice on any musical instrument. Just my $.02.
  11. Reading this thread made me feel “officially “ old! While I am on Facebook and Twitter, I seldom post on the former and have never posted and seldom read posts on the latter. It took me about 5 minutes to figure out what was meant by IT in a previous post above. Yes, I do go to YouTube and appreciate those who post there although I’ll admit I have no idea (nor any inclination) how to do so. But, that’s just me........
  12. Neglected to say-looking for a c/g
  13. Been away from the Concertina for a while, but want to get back to it. Looking to buy either a hybrid (Cielli, Clover, etc) or vintage. Willing to spend $2k-2.5k plus shipping. US only please. Thanks, Mike
  14. I have done a lot of this with mandolins. I think PayPal gives some (not a lot) of comfort. Plus if you use a credit card there are some protections afforded through them too. Always get a trial period or don't buy! I have even been guilty of a straight up trades where both parties send off there instruments on the same day. I have yet to have an issue, but that's not to say I won't in the future. It's really a crap shoot.
  15. Oops, deal fell through. Back on the market. New price: $1550. Thanks for looking
  16. I am pretty new to the (Anglo) concertina, but am experiencing the same thing as on guitar and mandolin. That being the ability to play up to tempo. I can play a tune OK and in time, but not up to "session speed". Same in the two stringed instruments I have played for many years at least for melody. Do I just have slow hands? Should I just be content to do accompaniment on guitar or are there some exercises to increase hand/finger speed at that tender age of 69? Thanks
  17. Sorry. No longer for sale. Thanks
  18. Merci beaucoup mon ami! Cool article.
  19. This is a mahogany end Lachenal that was recently refurbished by Greg Jowaisas, including adding felt bushings around the buttons. Price is $1700 including shipping in the continental US. Shipping elsewhere is negotiable. Plays well and is in tune. I am a new player and have too many others interests. Photos sent on request. Comes with a case. Thanks for looking
  20. I read the music and stumble through the tune for what seems like forever-then it's memorized and I am good to go. That's what happens when you're a no talent hack!
  21. This actually my first crack at this most excellent game. Congrats to Paul! I still can't see the move. Oh well, I will get schooled up for next year......
  22. Hmm........seems that reminds me of the old rock song Baker Street by Jerry Rafferty on his City to City album. To prevent having that song stuck in my head, I will amble on down to EDGWARE ROAD Don't know any songs called that.........
