Bob Tedrow Posted January 22, 2005 Posted January 22, 2005 Something new in the shop http://hmi.homewood.net/pan
David Barnert Posted January 23, 2005 Posted January 23, 2005 Interesting pictures. Where did the reeds come from? They don't look new (and I assume that if you were making concertina reeds we'd know about it), so I assume they're salvage. Do you have a reliable enough supply of them to "mass produce" reed pans that accommodate them? Just wondering.
Bob Tedrow Posted January 23, 2005 Author Posted January 23, 2005 First things first. I have been making reeds for a good while. I frequently replace broken or rusted reeds in older instruments. You can't buy them at the Piggly Wiggly you know. It takes a file and a feel and a proper piece of steel. (hmm, that sounds rather poetic) I can match the timbre of the originals. Building a reed frame or a good reed pan is a fair challenge. I'm working on it. But.....nothing for sale yet. Maybe this year, we'll see.

Good files I have, feel I can maybe develop, but getting the right material? I wouldn't know what to ask for. Theo
Bob Tedrow Posted January 24, 2005 Author Posted January 24, 2005 I have collected a modest supply of several "recipes" of steel. They all have to be milled down to a useful dimension. I have made reeds from six or seven sources. They all have a different timbre.
Theo Posted January 24, 2005 Posted January 24, 2005 Sounds like I can look forward to many happy hours of filing then! Theo
