david robertson
Here's a puzzling auction entry, featuring a concertina with "two buttons on the end to lower the instrument a semitone". How does that work, then? Two sets of reeds?
Bill N
Never seen one like this myself, but it looks like there is a knob just below the air button that operates a slide. With one on each end, maybe they operate like the slide on a chromatic harmonica, and block off one set of holes while opening another?
Roger Hare
I had spotted this one and was going to ask the same question! Wouldn't slides and two sets of reeds make for an extremely (unacceptably) complicated instrument? RH
Rod
Perhaps it's effect was restricted to a particular note or two for a very specific reason ? It could have been employed to provide some sort of restricted trill, vibrato or tremolo effect ?
JimLucas
Anybody here in a position to go examine this one and report back?
Roger Hare
Anybody here in a position to go examine this one and report back? The auction is today at Winchcombe near Cheltenham - too late! Roger Hare
Here's a puzzling auction entry, featuring a concertina with "two buttons on the end to lower the instrument a semitone". How does that work, then? Two sets of reeds? Hm! I just checked - this lot went for £50 (below the estimate of £80-£100). I wonder if I have just missed a 'wonderful opportunity'... Rod
The eight-fold bellows should have excited people to offer a bit more for it. !
malcolm clapp
I wonder if I have just missed a 'wonderful opportunity'... Roger I doubt it....unless you are stocking a museum Having said that, I would have been interested in seeing the internals, but I can't see that this would ever have made a decent player, 8 fold or otherwise. Moi aussi! It was curiosity which was driving me - 8-fold bellows, etc. It could also have been a good 'first attempt at restoration' instrument...
