Locality

Recommended Posts

Paul, Ken, I know it's been asked before but can't you flick a metaphorical switch and force everyone on Cnet to name their locality? Perhaps the new format makes this easier?

Before the 'There is a specialist concertina thief browsing Cnet in the hope of pinpointing my Jeffries' paranoiacs chime in, all I would like to see is a country, nothing more detailed than that. Then I know whether the person I'm interested in is likely to be awake, if they probably wrote that provoking comment AFTER they got back from the pub, whether there is any possibility of meeting up with them or buying their instrument, whatever.

The last time I looked, we could set it to insist that all _new_ members would have to add their location before being able to join, but there was no way (short of shutting down the whole operation) to force all the existing members to go back and add it. Given that we have several thousand members, that is quite a few. This is up to Paul, and the last time he considered it IIRC the feeling was this would be hard to change at this point. Like you, I appreciate knowing what part of the world people are from when giving newbies advice and so on. So we just encourage folks to add this in their profile, and the most active posters have been pretty good about it, either in the official place or in a signature block (you can also customize that folks, even I could do it!). Not ideal, but there you are.

Thanks for the suggestion, Ken, I just added a location-signature too.

Is there a way for the forum to display Location (if available) on the left hand side where it shows number of posts and joining date?

So have I.

Displaying location under the avatar is an excellent idea, and more useful than the other stuff as far as I'm concerned. At this point I have an awful feeling of deja vu though.(Why doesn't the stupid spellchecker supply accents to French words used routinely in English? I can't be bothered to go and find the characters and that would be a good consolation for always trying to change my S's to Zeds...) I think the location used to be displayed next to posts, and that we've been told before that it isn't possible anymore. Am I dreaming that?

Decided to go add my location. I just want to say I love C.net. I appreciate everyone's comments.

For a better understanding of posts it's good to know what type of concertina poster plays.

So besides my location I added that as well.

A related topic (automatically displaying the member's location if the member had chosen one, as was the case in the prior software release) was discussed in this thread, but wasn't really resolved.

In that thread Paul (who knows this system far better than I) said he couldn't find a way to enable it. If anyone knows Invision's system and can tell us how, we are all ears - we would have enabled it already. Otherwise, I'm afraid we can't tell you any more than that.

No worries, reminders are good for telling what we need to add back when we can. I miss location info too; it's just that other issues distract me most of the time here!

Have a musical day everyone.

Did you or Paul try asking Invision or posting a query on their peer-to-peer forum? I see on the prior thread that Randall Cayford said that this function is working on that forum. I can't check myself because you need a customer ID to log in.
