Jamaica (Playford) - Bass Runs
Wolf Molkentin replied to Wolf Molkentin's topic in Teaching and Learning
Hi Steve, thank you very much for the hints (and the all-too-true remarks regarding our treble EC, which seem to be quite a challenge at that). Might be particularly ambitious to do that with a dancing tune with some requirements of its own... Might be a good idea to give "I Walk the Line" a try after that, since I would love to sing it anyway! Best -Wolf -
Alistair Anderson On Soundcloud
Wolf Molkentin replied to Pete Dunk's topic in Concertina Videos & Music
Yes, and the new stuff is great! I had to repost one track since by now not too many people seem to be aware of his channel. -
Thank you very much for the attention and advice (and kind words too) Jim! I was sort of freewheeling with this one, and your suggestion puts it in a context that will let me take a definitely new approach... Best - Wolf

Theme Of The Month, May 2014: Speed Zone Ahead!
Wolf Molkentin replied to Jim Besser's topic in Tune of the Month
Have to go for the original version first, Robert - however you don't seem to have destroyed thar I'd say... -
I'd second both advices given. As to the question raised which type of concertina your friend is going for I also had the understanding that it would be the "Anglo" (a.k.a. "Anglo-German") because of the then typical number of 30 buttons. If you're not sure however, you should ask your friend in order to get him a fiting instrument. Good luck with your searching - Wolf

After an hour of trying to prevail over the tune I ended up with this take: Chanter's Tune. What do you guys make out of it? Best- Wolf

Thank you Robert and (on the SC) Alex, very glad that you like the arrangement resp. playing! -
Tune Of The Month For May, 2014: Michael Turner's Waltz
Wolf Molkentin replied to Jim Besser's topic in Tune of the Month
Hi Chuck, since I've been pairing this one with another, very well-known Minuet, this is most likely my understanding as well. It's definitely no Waltz. Now that you're raising the topic the Austrian "Ländler" come to my mind as well. Best wishes - Wolf -
Theme Of The Month For April, 2014: Beyond 4/4, 6/8 And 3/4
Wolf Molkentin replied to Jim Besser's topic in Tune of the Month
Hi Robert, good to have you back and you enjoyed such a nice holiday! Interesting tune, nicely played, I like the somewhat erratic harmony! -
Tune Of The Month For May, 2014: Michael Turner's Waltz
Wolf Molkentin replied to Jim Besser's topic in Tune of the Month
So, here's my first attempt, pre-recorded spontaneously anticipating the more and more likely result of the poll: Michael Turner's Waltz. I might add that listening to Danny's fine playing this tune had been an obvious and welcome landmark whilst developing fully harmonized playing skills some two years ago... thank you for that and many more great and inspiring recordings, Danny! -
Four English Concertinas For Sale (Located In The Netherlands)
Wolf Molkentin replied to Lemon's topic in Buy & Sell
If you look into the OP you'll notice that the seller seems to mention if one of the items is sold. One Wheatstone and the Nonparail seem thus to be still available.., -
What about proclaiming a winner (and one by far again), Jim? A merry month of May to you and all TOTMers...

So would I have to repeat the B section or omitt that? Thanks in advance for confirming that point! -
Jamaica (Playford) - Bass Runs
Wolf Molkentin replied to Wolf Molkentin's topic in Teaching and Learning
Mike, I would really like you to post a recording of your playing thus providing new clues to your understanding of this dance tune! Apart from that, you have a profound musical understanding as related to dancing, and I really appreciate the input! And regarding the EC, if you are happy with what you're doing, there's no problem. And if not to full extent, there would be ways to more complex or complete playing. In any event, I appreciate the appreciation! Best - Wolf -
Restored Lachenal "inimitable" For Sale
Wolf Molkentin replied to david robertson's topic in Buy & Sell
As some of you will know, I'm very fond of this "family", having a very nice ebonized "Excelsior" with a very special (both mellow and bold) tone and balance myself which is likewise suitable for song accompaniment as it is for playing tunes. This rosewood "Inimitable" may or may not have exactly the same longer scale reeds, but I would at least recommend giving this 'tina a try. These "old model" Lachenals can be quite unique instruments not just regarding the lovely looks... Best wishes - Wolf Edit: New six-fold bellows positively counts as "pro" here as the air supply of the original five-fold bellows of my Excelsior is hardly to be rated as exessive... -
Jamaica (Playford) - Bass Runs
Wolf Molkentin replied to Wolf Molkentin's topic in Teaching and Learning
Hi David, thank you for your critical remarks, really appreciated! As to the details, I take it from you that the B section doesn't deserve repeating; maybe I had Parson 's Farewell in my mind where the A section is half as long as the B part too, and I would really be reluctant not to repeat the longer B part... Maybe I'm wrong on that one too. As to Jamaica I will play it AAB and see how that works for me. With the topical bass lines, I started with the reverse movement at the very end, which I still like and find fitting. The octave doubling was by intent, as mentioned in my OP, but maybe it doesn't work; I had it included just very recently. The doubling at the very beginning on the "A" note replaces the low F which I don't have on my treble EC. Tried "C" instead but wasn't that content with it. If I take both Mike's and your advice (and Adrian's, which is not here, as well which I'll still have to consider more in detail) into account I might shift the tune from C to G in order to get more reverse movement and lift. Will post another recording soon I guess... Best - Wolf -
Here is a set of my favourite O'Carolan tunes (some minor flaws, recorded live in one turn).

Wow, that's great Steve - the Parnassus being the only newly built EC that might - or even would almost certainly - tempt me to swap my vintage EC for it; my congrats in advance! Best wishes - Wolf

Interesting insights, Jim, thanks for reposting that. As to the aspect of advanced playing techniques, the flat buttons might ease rapid single line playing rather than adding full harmony IMO.

Jamaica (Playford) - Bass Runs
Wolf Molkentin replied to Wolf Molkentin's topic in Teaching and Learning
Thank you very much for your input Mike, highly appreciated! The suggestion to keep the music within a higher range seems to make sense (and is in fact coinciding with some advice from another side). I will definitely consider that for my playing even if it's not very likely that it will be used for leading a country dance anytime soon... Best - Wolf -
Hi Steve, for me it's positively domed buttons! I just had another try on a Wheatstone with flat, edgy buttons and found them quite irritating. Maybe this is because I have not every finger in a 90 degrees angle over the button, but that's how I'm playing the EC then... i was very happy with the domed buttons of my Excelsior from day one! Best - Wolf

Hi Steve, I'm delighted with your appreciation and can live with the lack of constructive criticism this time... Thank you so much for your ongoing attending to my singing songs! Best wishes - Wolf

I re-recorded this song, which had already been mentioned in another thread some months ago. The first recording was suffering from real bad miking... Mole in the Ground Any comment appreciated! - Wolf
