Why Are Concertinas Hexagonal?

indeed, as mentioned above, for me it’s 1/6 and not 1/4 or 1/8 -
Why Are Concertinas Hexagonal?

Lachenal baritone ECs have a mix of radial and parallel reed chambers -
Of course that’s correct Alex, however my understanding was that Sandra was well aware of that and just trying to approach the „symptoms“ by means of the valves (which might be successful to some extent, but at cost of the response)

Anyone with a 7mount in Germany?
Wolf Molkentin replied to Irina's topic in General Concertina Discussion
I can only add that I once (many years ago) heard Ralf play a 7mount Anglo himself, and it sounded pretty good -

… but given the choice of a radial arrangement it will be just the other way around I reckon: the circle being the best option, and dodecagonal the next best thing (but still in danger to roll off the table), then octagonal (Æola) asf. but I agree that hexagonal is most pleasing re aesthetics (and I prefer it when supporting the instrument with a knee/thigh as well, but for a personal reason, because a twist by 60 degrees is exactly what fits my approach) -
you have it right, a Bb/F would require a Bb (A#) on both rows
-
on a 20b C/G there shouldn’t be an A# reed at all

however, I‘m not aware of any advantage in homogeneous bellows movement anyway -
you get access to some articles free of charge, don‘t you?

20b Lachenal Anglos with Mahogany ends are quite affordable (about 400 to 450 GBP) and commonly much better than their reputation (I have one myself, my first Anglo, apart from a 20b „Hohner“ which was (and still is, I guess) really bad

Is this a good concertina maker?
Wolf Molkentin replied to Sandra A's topic in General Concertina Discussion
„Brunner“ I seem to recall… -
my hiatus was entirely life-related, I had been getting along well with the expanded options…

sometimes it can temporarily help to flip them over and then scrape the new topside

To buy or not to buy?
Wolf Molkentin replied to Martin Essery's topic in General Concertina Discussion
the Cello Suites (transposed or not) are a fantastic challenge for concertinists (and wonderful music anyway) IMO, would appreciate to hear a recording of your playing one of these at some point! -
Is this a good concertina maker?

„Hohner“ branded concertinas will be made by Stagi (or Bastari, if older) - and a maker in China can’t be entirely ruled out either, I reckon -
in fact, a 30b Anglo would give you not just accidentals, but also some nice lower notes completing harmonies for the „home“ keys - but you can perfectly do without those too… on a personal note: I „upgraded“ to 30 and more buttons some years ago, but didn’t play much at all ever since - recently I bought a much smaller than usual 20b instrument which assumed I would really like, which I do! and for the time being I‘m perfectly happy with the somewhat restricted options of this basic layout (which got me going once again) - there’s nothing wrong with it, enjoy!

concertina musical instruments Lachanel & Co 30 Key concertina
Wolf Molkentin replied to SarahESingleton's topic in Buy & Sell
Hi Sarah, you might want to correct the title of your post to „Lachenal“, to have your offer included in resp. searches Also, pics and an indication of your asking price would certainly help. Good luck with the sale! -
For obvious I reasons I‘m not the one to solve this, however this choice might indicate that Ab is deemed more important than G#, for some reason
-
I was musing about that (or adding a F#), albeit on the LHS - however I couldn’t fully convince myself of this concept as yet (for my TT I chose the B natural instead of Bb) - and the E (resp. A for the TT) would be quite nice too
-
I ask myself the same question any time this is brought up - I altered all of my EC treble concertinas (apart from one tuned to meantone) the way you‘re suggesting. The baritone already had solder attached to the G#, and all I had to do then was swap the reed with the Ab one - and that’s how your OT remark can be transformed into supporting the sale: Buyer wouldn’t need to apply solder him- or herself, as this had already been done, so leave it as is or just swap the two reeds with (almost certainly) identical reed shows. Good luck with the sale! 🐺
