thanks very much

House of Musical Traditions in Takoma Park, Md. carries some, but mostly low-end Italian jobs. But a while back I heard they were selling Tedrows, as well.

Yep, they would be pretty much your only chance. You might try calling the Buttonbox in Mass.... you never know when they might have a new Morse. Otherwise, I suppose you could call Bob Tedrow and see if he has any available.. though I don't think he takes a credit card so it would be hard to see how it would get to you by Christmas.

I would concur with the "House of Musical Traditions" suggestion. Particularly, talk to Wendy Morrison. The following is from their web site

Wendy Morrison is HMT's Accordion and Concertina Specialist. She has worked at HMT since 1982.

Wendy is in the store once a week and will be happy to consult with you one-on-one on your accordion purchase. By appointment only! Please send email to "accordions" at hmtrad.com or call (301) 270-9090.

Problem with House of Musical Traditions is they are expeeeeeensive. Expect to pay multiple hundreds for a cheapie piece of Chinese crap when you could get a cheapie Hohner (one and a half steps up from total crap) for $225.

There is (or was) a used instrument store right off Charles Street in downtown Baltimore (on the same cross street as the south side of the Walters Art Gallery) that caters to the students at Peabody. They sometimes have concertinas for rent/for sale. I distinctly remember renting one as a stage prop back in my Towson University tech theater days. It won't be anything fabulous, but it's bound to be cheaper than HMT.

They do tend to be a bit more expensive... though frankly, I have never seen a Chinese Concertina there.. then again other than the occasional Tedrow, I have never seen a really good concertina at HMT. I think in general they charge retail. But they operate a very friendly store which at least if you are local can be worth something.

Oh, HMT is a very friendly store! My favorite store anywhere (since I have never personally set foot in either Andy's Front Hall or the Button Box)(yet)! And once you have a concertina of some kind, there is a wealth of information and support to be found therein.

But, as Bill pointed out, their concertinas, at least the anglos, tend to be cheaply-made ones. You'd get a better deal on ebay with the red, white, or blue ones, in my opinion.

Ted's. Great place for used violins, brass instruments, etc. They had a non-functional Italian stage prop concertina years ago... at least it looked the part.

HMT are good, but Button Box are better! This is not a reflection on HMT and Wendy, but Button Box are very good indeed! They really know their stuff - as you would expect from a shop that makes concertinas as well as sells them. I know it's a longish drive from Baltimore (in England it would be a very long drive) but it will be worth it.

Agreed. HMT has nice folks; the BB has nice folks AND good instruments. (to be fair, HMT has good stringed instruments, but the squeezebox selection is low-end. And I don't believe they service their own instruments)

In the event that you didn't find a box for Christmas you might try Kensington Concertinas. Email danatina@mindspring.com. He builds very nice Concertinas - beautiful to look at and play. They sound great, too! Kensington isn't too far from you either. Bob

Not sure what exactly you're looking for. Concertina Connection in the Netherlands, http://www.concertinaconnection.com/

makes a range of fine instruments. They also sell instruments made to their specifications in China. I've never played one, but all indications on this baord are that they are among the best on the inexpensive (about $300) beginner instruments. They have anglo and english.

I would have to agree that HMT would not be the place to buy. The best you will do there is a Bastari, although they might have the occasional Lachenal or even Wheatstone or Jeffries on consignment. Kensington conceritnas are very good instruments indeed, play as well or better than any Jeffries or Crabb and cost about 5K less than vintage instruments. The engineering is superb, the sound is perfect, and they have a beatiful aesthetic, much like the most desirable instruments of the past. And, they are new, so you wont be troubled with leaky bellows, bad reeds, sticky buttons and tuning problems for years to come.

Howdy:

I was just at HMT about a week ago on a trip down south and sadly going in the opposite direction of NESI due to a family event.

Did not get to see everything since I arrived 10 minutes before closing, but the only concertinas available were Stagi's.

I did manage to purchase two very nice sets of real bone bones before they shut the doors for the evening.

It's a fun stop if you're in the area.

Oh yeah, great crab (no, not Crabb) in Baltimore.

Have fun,

Perry Werner
