Constuction And Repair

Taking solder off a reed is actually quite straightforward (ie. heat it with a soldering iron and it will run off, make sure it doesn't run into the gap between the reed and shoe), but will almost certainly leave you in a position where you will have to tune and set the reed, which is not quite as straightforward. What's the bigger picture here? Did someone convert a C/G to Bf/F or G/D by solder?

Can't you also destroy the temper of the reed if you get the it too hot? And isn't the expertise that lets you safely avoid that calamity something that comes with experience? I know that's an expertise I don't have. That's one "repair" I would prefer to leave to the pros.
