Who Are These Fish?

Recommended Posts

Well, the excitement around here is certainly mounting. Bitter envy doesn’t prevent me from wishing all SI attendees good luck and a great time. You especially, Kurt Braun, if you can make it there at all. Good luck also to Bob Tedrow today. Maybe shipping those concertinas to Ken was a good idea, all things considered.

For the rest of you, here’s a tough little contest for your amusement. The winner is the first person who can identify all 8 (or the most, 4 minimum) of my little band of sea critters, see attached image. Sorry the resolution couldn’t be higher. Prize to be negotiated and could be one of the following items, all lightly used:

Folk Music and Dances of Ireland by Breandan Breathnach, paperback, like new

the John Williams video tutor (This should go to a beginning anglo player, please.)

the out-of-print classic English tutor by Frank Butler

the out-of-print classic English tutor by Richard Carlin

the Waltz Book, vol 1, by Bill Matthiessen

a bottle of Texas wine (the Stagi of wine-producing regions) or other libation to be negotiated later.

Disclaimer: This contest was cagily timed so that NE Squeeze-In attendees cannot compete evenly, due to dwindling time beforehand and having too little cortex left for a while afterwards.

edited to add the 8th picture, which I couldn't resist. No more, I promise.

NOTE: Image "g" is incorrect. See posting below for proper "g" image.

I can't quite see the relationship between fish and concertinas.

I'm not entering the "competition", so:

One of those pictured is known as a "concertina fish". I have no idea why.

I believe one of the of the several names of another is "blowfish".

Another might be called a "sucker". (Is that one of the genus Preposterous... er, Plecostomas?)

I'm pretty sure another is a "file fish", and I suspect yet another of being a "reed fish".

But some of those are guesses.

I don't see the one I know as a "stone fish". Is that because he couldn't find a "wheat fish"?

I believe the one he removed was a "blue discus", but since it's now gone, we needn't discus(s) it. ;)

Alright, with one of the helpful hints above, I've got them all. So here are the answers, with documentation.

Through the course of research, the original images 'acquired' for this collage were discovered.

a) flutefish ( http://home.iae.nl/users/rhulsen/sa/flutefish.jpg )

B) drumfish ( http://home.att.net/~rshofstall/fishes.html )

c) pipefish ( http://www.seahorses.de/pipefish.htm )

d) concertina fish ( http://faweb.fa.gov.tw/tfb10/e/f612/f170a.htm )

e) shovelnose guitarfish ( http://www.bajadestinations.com/fishid/gui...hovelguitar.htm )

f) fiddle fish (more commonly called an angelfish) ( http://www.fische-seite.de/Bluntnose-fiddlefish-.html )

original

g) discus (talking to a friend of mine, I said "But how can you play a discus?", to which he replied "Maybe it's a compact discus.")

g2) banjo catfish ( http://animal-world.com/encyclo/fresh/catfish/banjocat.php )

h) boxfish ( http://www.divegallery.com/boxfish.htm )

9 out of 8. Not bad, I'd say.

Excellent work, Roy. Maybe your real career is in research or forensics. Ironic that you had the most trouble with the concertina fish. Contact me regarding possible prizes. Note, Nanette, that I said it was a "band" of sea critters.

Here's another picture of the concertina fish that may make it clearer. English, Anglo, or duet?

Looks to me like a perch that got flattened by a steamroller then scorched by the bars of a barbecue grill.

Edited to "improve" the description.

But judging from the face, I'm sure it must be a bluesfish. B)

Edited to add: Don't believe the instruction with the image. Click thumbnail contract! (And if that doesn't work, trying clicking the red shoes.)
