  1. Been invited to a friends house tomorrow evening for a night of Christmas Carols. He holds it every year and invites his two friends from his village who play with the London Symphony Orchestra. He plays English concertina and harmonium. I have just received the music for the night and most is in either 3 or 4 flats . I am strictly a Morris musician who thinks G and D will suffice for most everything. Wish me luck, I'm off to practice.
  2. Chris Love the Fete Du Village Short of asking what is the name of the unnamed tune, do you have the ABCs or some such??
  3. Google led me too; here Which appears to be what you want.
  4. Its alright David its only a duet not a real concertina Runs and hides. This is probably no way to sell CDs by alienating your prospective customers but I could not resist it
  5. My morris side, Aldbury Morris, have just released their 2003 CD. It has concertina content in that I play my English on a tracks 1 and 4. Downloads and contact details here
  6. What is the full URL for thesession.com? having difficulties finding it.
  7. AND NOW SOMETHING ELSE ABOUT BUTTONS Goran Please learn how to use the quote button, it would make your posts so much easier to understand and I for one do read most of what you post.
  8. The Sainted Mrs Bailey and I are just off to the recording studio with the rest of Aldbury Morris to record our new CD which will feature amonst others me on concertina and melodeon and Mrs Bailey's singing. So our favorite Concertina CD for this Christmas will be "After the Brawl was Over"
  9. Is this what you progress to after mastering a "Tutor Model" Concertina? Look Here
  10. Indeed the balck spot indicates thread you have posted in. For full explanation of icons etc visit Help Pages
  11. Dave I don't think I said either of the things which you find distasteful but if I gave that impression I am sorry, I was just trying to understand your quote. I like your self have difficulty remembering tunes but am OK when I have something to trigger my memory and to support me in my memorised playing. I personally use ABC which provides me with enough information to be able to play tunes which have slipped out of the list I am regualrly play at any one time. I find this convienient as I have a system by which I can capture a whole tune on a business card and therefore can carry a whole mass of tunes in a small space. Follow the link in my signature to my website if you are interested.
  12. Dave I don't understand the bit above where you say that yu can play by ear if the version is strictly as the dots dictae. Can you expain some more. It seems to me that playing by ear cannot be constrained by some unseen dots??
  13. Hi Guys. Just got my internet connection back after 5 days so a bit of catching up to do. Re How many times to play a tune; the sainted John Kirkpatrick puts it better than me but I agree with all he says. John's thoughts
  14. Trust me I do not underestimate the importance, I think my point is that as an English man I should learn "my music". There is a reason that a nation gets its own traditions, dances, songs, tunes, etc and one should be proud of them. There is a theory about folk traditions that nations who have been conquered by other nations are far more protective of their traditions whereas the conquering nations are far less so. This leaves England ex-owner of a vast empire disdainful of its traditions, so I do my bit to keep them alive.
  15. My point of view, and possibly only mine, is that if you go to sessions where only one type of music is played (or worse still it would appear one type of music at one speed) you will miss out on the wealth of other music that you coul play. I tend to stick to English tunes because I'm English but if I hear somethong nice from somewhere else I try to learn it.
  16. Because people are willing to pay the price asked The difference is between price and value. Jim beat me to this with his reply Depends on where you live try the C.Net home page for info The same reson my cats leave the house at the mearest hint. No taste (in concertina playing that is not boy friends ) Depends on what you want to do and what suits you is the recommended reply but the correct reply is an English When two people sing together My thoughts and not representative of any sane person.

  18. It is a program to interface with news servers, most commonly Outlook Express. Once you have a newsreader it needs to connect to a news server, your ISP will have one, and then you subscribe to what ever newsgroup you like. The newsreader will collect a list of available newsgroups from the news server when you first connect. OR Alternately the news groups are available through Google by clicking on the Groups tab.
  19. I should have followed Jim's example and not got involved.
  20. If you believe in the above why do you keep giving Goran's advice to all and sundry which states catagorically that we must have handles and the established way of holding a concertina is wrong. For example
  21. Jim I also visit the Private Pilots Romour Network which runs on the same software as this forum. It currently has over fifty fourums and when I just visited it 500+ people online. So its possible <name drop mode> I would also add something rude about piano accordions but I was at a friend's party at the weekend and I met Karen Tweed who is a sublime accordionist who showed what the accordion is capable of (not just Spanish Ladies (accordion joke)). </name drop mode>
