Rare Concertina Book

Recommended Posts

Many Years ago I purchased a large book on the front cover "Concertina" it is a very rare book dating back to the owner who constructed it A Hayman June 18th 1886 and was later owned by E H Coleridge 6 Myotte Hill Teignmouth Dec 1922. It is a compilation of music for concertina or two concertinas. It has a Tutor section in the back and it looks as though Mr Hayman assembled it using concertina music available at that time from various sources the oldest date 1854.

It would take too long to write down all the titles featured in this book, but I will list those that may start a stampede to my door

Arrangement for two concertinas by Joseph Warren Popular operas - Der Freyschutz - Weber , Puritani - Bellini , Masaniello

Tunes from the early Concertina Journals

Tunes from Simpsons Concertina Airs

Select Melodies No 1 -arranged by T. I Dipple for Piano and Concertina (purchased from Rock Chidley Concertina Manufacturer 135 High Holborn London

No 8 and 24 arranged by Joseph Warren Now purchased from Wheatstone (Conduit St)

Standard Foreign Operas arranged by Nicola Silvani as part of The Amateur Concertinist collection

Voyage Lyroque 24 Politico National Airs Solo Concertina arranged by Giulio Regondi

(Norway Sweden, Denmark ,Russia ,Prussia,Poland Saxony Bavaria Austria Hungary Sardinia Romagna Naples Spain Potugal Switzerland France Belgium Holland England America ) I have not mis counted there are sometimes two tunes for a country.

6 Melodies arranged by Giulio Regondi and C. Oberthur (Including one written by Prince Albert)

Fantasia on Irish Airs Written by George Case

Many other tunes but the above may be of interest.

Now what do I do with it. the ICA archives probably.

So is this all printed broadsheets bound into a book, Alan? (I've seen books of piano music assembled like this). If so it may well be the ICA has the music in more accessible form already

Or are we talking manuscript?

It must be for English so I'll resist the temptation to make a quiet approach....

Almost certainly English,Dirge .This is the original music, but printed copies assembled into a bound book as you suggest. It is only really of major interest if this music does not exist anywhere else.

ALAN: what you might do is check its contents against the holdings of the ICA library and make copies of those items that the library doesn't have. . . . . .it will take a little while. . . .but it seems to me that it would be worth it in the end. . . . . . . .there were one or two items that didn't ring an immediate bell. . . . but most of the stuff that you list is known...............allan

Thanks Allan, I may let the ICA have it for a while to download all the information from it.

Alan,

Another thought...why not try placing it (digitally) in the Concertina Library? Try emailing Bob Gaskins in that regard; he could quickly tell you whether that material fits the target of the CL. The ICA archives are a great resource to ICA members, but the CL is available to everyone (and much easier to access).

This is said as an ICA member, who recommends membership to those who are not!

Thanks Dan,The best possible solution is as you suggest and offer it initially to Bob ,I could always post it off to him and then get Bob to send it to the ICA to hold as a master in their archives. There is no way I could digitally send the contents it is a very thick book A4 size and 25mm thick. A large content. What I have listed is only the ones I thought may be of major interest, there is a great deal more. It would be rather nice to let everyone have access to this music than put it on Ebay for someone to keep as an investment.

Pauline would love the exercises in the Tutor section,

Exercises in C,G,D,A,E,F,Bp,Ep Appogiaturas,turns and other grace notes, reiterated notes,plain shake,turned shake,continued shake,prepared shake,double shake.practice of the shake in various keys, Staccato,Slur,Three modes of Staccato-accent & emphasis,Triplets and Sestriplets,Major scales in Thirds,Sixths,Octaves and Tenths,Holding notes with a moving passage,Exercises in 3,4.5,6 note chords,Scale with an accompaniment,

A new system of Fingering (in number format)

Did anyone think playing the English Concertina was straightforward?

So much to learn - so little time.

If someone could Email me Bob's Email details I will put this in motion.

Hi Al

On the front page with the list of forums, the history forum lists Bob as the leader of the forum. Click on his name, and the lower left will give an email, and pm.

Works good

Thanks

Bob has agreed to copy the whole book and make it available to you all.

There is also a possibility that someone may record the interesting sections of the Tutor and make this available as a down load .

I will or a person will write about this if it is successful.

Hello. Is this book going to be available online? Seems very, very interesting, especially for lowering the boundaries to play more classical oriented music on EC. Are there any 'not so difficult' things in there?

Howdy Alan, Allan & Co.:

Was just checking some old "strings" and ran across this.

No one has posted anything since January '08.

I was wondering if this project has moved along and if and when this book might be a reality.

Thanks for the efforts of all those involved.

Have fun,

Perry Werner

Hallo Perry

If you have a look at page five on Discussion Forums you will see that about half of this book is posted there "Concertina Book from 1886 Music on Web"

Juliette's Father has been posting these pages, but I had a message from his Wife to say that he had been very ill.He is making a recovery and has promised to post some more pages when he is a bit better.I have not heard any more since that communication. As soon as I get any information I will post it on that thread.

Alan,

I know you don't really know me from Adam's off Ox but if you want it all scanned as a text I would be willing to do it for you. We are up in Edinburgh and I will be down in Bristol at the end of the month (24th to the 27th) for a festival (Harmonicas). So if you aren't terribly far from there we could meet and than you could see if you would want to take up my offer or not. Being a book collector myself and the son of one as well, I do understand and "no thank you" will not hurt any feelings. My Dad has books that if us kids don't want them when he dies (may that be many, many years from now) they are list for the Smithsonian, so like I said, I would understand and still be willing to offer to scan them and IF time allows do a cleaning of the pages (remove age marks but not play with any text, just so that it would print and read clearer). That part would be a big IF as that takes up a good bit of time on the computer.

Michael you have, I think, previously made this offer, which I thank you for and the awkward situation is that the book is in France.Juliette Daum originally offered to send the pages of the book for all to see and also do a video of the Tutor section referred to above. I thought at the time this was more than I could expect and would be of great assistance to all. Sadly circumstances are such that Juliette and her family have had personal problems, due to illness that has caused a delay in completing the download and the Video.Part of this book is already available in the general forum section.

I have today sent an Email for information which I will pass on when I get it.I do not however wish to create any more pressure on this family at this difficult time.

Alan,

I respect and understand that. I am still dealing with the "side effects" of the treatment of the thyroid cancer I had (so far showing clear but less than 6 months post radiation so we will see). The offer still stands and I will wait on time and measure and hopefully her fahter recovers very well and my offer is not needed. Will ad him to our family prayers.
