they are considered by some pedestrians, motorists and police to be a public nuisance for their self-destructive (yes-- these people are suicidal) disregard for traffic regulations...

This is pretty much a dead thread but as regards bicycles and messengers: What appears to many to a disregard for traffic law is for many bikers an attempt to minimize exposure to vehicular traffic. If I jump a light and cross on a red when there is clearly no traffic coming from either left or right, and traffic in my direction is stopped at the light, then I am safer than if I waited to cross the intersection at the same time as all the autos.

 

I was a bicycle messenger in Chicago for about six months after high school. I had completed two very long cross country tours at that point. After delivery all day I danced in rehearsal for a rendering of Electra in a choreographic Greek chorus at the U of C. Aside from being very street savvy and muscular, I also had a strong sense of immortality that comes with being 19 I guess. I was a fearless warrior battling traffic for mercenary gain by day and an artist making it with the college girls by night. It was one of the best summers of my life. My thighs looked like I was wearing jodhpurs.

 

Then the snow started to fall and I took a fall and totaled my bike. I moved to the east coast and never looked back.
