  1. Photo. montage of the guest artists at The Royal Oak Folk Club, Lewes, in 2007. Spot the concertina players; there are several. Credits for Will Duke at the end of the video. http://www.youtube.com/user/VicandTinaSmith#p/u/4/LmQLe_Fz2UA
  2. I always arch mine, with just the upper (hand) part of the fourth finger in contact with the hand rail, as this tensions the strap on the back of the hand. http://www.youtube.com/user/ConcertinaTuition?gl=GB&hl=en-GB#p/a/f/1/4esXds_v6xk
  3. How "arched" are your hands, when you play? This is a key factor, in terms of hand/instrument stability and control. Regards, Peter. PS - thanks for the comment, the other day, on one of my videos. I cannot access my YouTube account, to respond.
  4. Trams were running (more or less) fine, and these chaps did not seem to be having any mobility problems: http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1661776
  5. Hi Bob, If I can interpret "better" as being "easier", I would say C/G. Regards, Peter.
  6. Here's the previous thread on the subject: http://www.concertina.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=7662&start=0&p=75529&hl=bath%20abbey&fromsearch=1entry75529
  7. A couple of nice videos, Chas. I was hoping to get a glimpse of a concertina, but only saw a fiddle nailed up on the wall, and that m thing. It would appear that, in Sweden, the snow falls mainly in the fields; is this a legal requirement?
  8. It's this element which keeps me visiting, regularly, if not posting as regularly as before. What I find "interesting", is the perception that people visiting C.net have to read every new posting. After my first few months, I had formed a view as to who was more likely to post informative, interesting, or amusing topics, and modified my reading accordingly. On topics where "trenches were dug" etc., I tended to avoid much of the debate. Hopefully this era has passed (at least for a while). There are culteral differences on both sides of "the pond", and this is reflected in both the subjects and manner of postings. Sometimes, this can make a topic more interesting and/or entertaining. After all, how many would choose to visit a forum where they are only served a diet of dry "facts"? So; I would encourage readers to be more selective.
  9. Speaking only for myself, I found it interesting. regards John Wild Me too! I like to be able to keep up with (some of) what's going on in the concertina world, without having to leave the house.
  10. Over the period 1985/93, I was fairly active with a portable cassette recorder, making recordings at many of the concertina events which I attended. Who knows what the future holds, but I thought that the list of recordings should be made available, "just in case"! Please note; with the exception of a few recordings currently on loan to Alan Day, my recording archive now resides with the International Concertina Association. The intention was for the ICA to transfer the recordings, from cassette tape, to digital format; a long and time-consuming process. I am not aware of the progress, to date, so please do not inundate the ICA with enquiries! Whilst the quality is not great, at least it is a recorded archive from the above era. 11. Hi Alan, Well, apart from those of mine which you already have, I've scanned down the list of my recordings (you have a copy of the list, somewhere), and there are a few; mainly at W.C.C.P. events. Quality is similar, though (i.e. I was recording an "informal event", rather than for archive purposes). These recordings are now with the I.C.A. archive, should you wish to access them! Regards, Peter.
  12. Harry's "main" concertina is a 38 key C/G Dipper (octagonal), which I presume to have the Jeffries layout. I played it at Witney 2006, but didn't try anything "fancy", so don't know for certain. Other C.net members will be able to confirm the number of keys on Fred's instruments, but I think that at least one was a 38 key Jeffries.

  14. Hi Jody, This link should be of assistance. http://www.vocalist.org.uk/busking_links.html Busking is something which I've not attempted for many years. My only thought is that is is probably safer done in a regulated, or "tourist" area of the country. "Merrie England" is fast becoming "Bandit England". Even 20 years ago, the late Paul Davies (a very experienced busker), told me that he no longer busked in Croydon, for fear of being mugged. No joke, as he busked with a very fine Jeffries, in old pitch. Good luck with your trip; I think you'll enjoy Witney. Regards, Peter.
  15. If one comes my way, I'll look out for you! Good publicity, I guess, Dick.
  16. You can play some nice music on a 20 penny Anglo. Alternatively, you could borrow a few extra keys from your one row melodeon, or perhaps do a bit of busking! Very good; obviously braver than me, over the weekend.
  17. No kidding involved!! It started snowing again this afternoon. Unfortunately I didn't buy any snowshoes, crampons, or ski-ing poles before it started (or cat litter, expensive salt etc) .... so am feeling marooned in the middle of town at the moment! Could be worse; you might have been stuck at the railway station! http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1652152
  18. I'm still trying to work out what you meant about bees being shot through the head with arrows Sarah !! Care to explain?? On all days apart from 14th February, we might know them as ledger lines ..... I think.
  19. I thought that only the late Nigel Chippindale did that (well, one foot!).
  20. If you follow this link, it will show Andy's various line-ups. I particularly like Magpie Lane; nice mix of vocals and instrumentals. http://www.myspace.com/andy_turner As an aside, I first met Andy at the World Marbles Championship of 1984; his morris team entered!
  21. I agree; I walked 10 miles, yesterday, in snow up to 6 inches deep. It took me 5 hours to thaw out, when I got home! http://www.geograph....k/photo/1651448 Hey, Peter what about some tunes from you then? Are you going to come around to record me? If so, I'll have to remember where I left the concertina.
  22. I agree; I walked 10 miles, yesterday, in snow up to 6 inches deep. It took me 5 hours to thaw out, when I got home! http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1651448
  23. Left hand down a bit! I've just checked; some trains are still running to Portsmouth, and the sun is out: http://www.bbc.co.uk/hampshire/content/webcams/webcam_portsmouths_spinnaker_tower_webcam.shtml Nice one, Ralph. Regards, Peter.
