Roger Hare
I am trying to find two sea-song collections edited by Charles Ipcar (a.k.a. Charles Noble, I believe). These are: Sea Songs of Cicely Fox Smith and Uncommon Sailor-Songs. I've searched all the usual places with no success. Can anyone suggest where I might track these down? I'm thinking of specialist music shops, etc. of which I am unaware... I'm also potentially interested in some of the (many) books written by Cicely Fox Smith. Does any erudite reader of this forum know which of them include printed scores? I think I may be able to obtain 'print on demand' copies of some of her books, from a company in India, but (in the first instance) I'm only interested in the ones with dots... Thanks. Anglogeezertoo
Ahoy Roger! Both books should be available from Charlie via his website, here : http://www.charlieipcar.com indeed samples of both can be seen here : http://www.charlieipcar.com/songs_of_cfs_sample.pdf and here : http://www.charlieipcar.com/uncommon_sailor-songs_sample.pdf Ooops! Posted before I'd finished! Curses on this new fangled forum! As for her own books she was of course a poet & author, so no scores in her own books. In the first quarter of the 20th century about 20 of her poems were adapted for singing by well known composers of the day and they were also used by the BBC in their early broadcasts of the late 1920s. There is a Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/193746917452633/?fref=ts but there's not a great deal of activity. [I think it was Manchester - I've also checked University of Manchester Library, University of Salford Library, Warrington Libraries, Cheshire Libraries and Greater Manchester Libraries - Bolton had the largest selection so I'm off there on Saturday to check 'em out. What fun, it's years since I did a serious literature search ax several libraries...] Thanks again for the web-site URL Roger
Ken_Coles
Wow, Charlie Ipcar! I got to know him during my all-too-brief time living in New England a decade and a half ago. He attended the sessions at the Press Room in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. One time he invited me to come up to Maine and join several others in a half tongue-in-cheek event they called a "shanty raid." Some festival had neglected to book his group, so they planned to go around the town in question singing songs on the street and outside the venues anyway. Sadly, I couldn't make it, but I'll bet it was a "success." Dave Webber and Anni Fentiman sing at least one of the poems (I can't recall the title) not given in Charlie's list of recordings in a very moving version that SFAIK they have not recorded. Moral - don't do internet searches while doing something else! Thank you folks. Roger.
