SteveS
I've just returned from an auction where there was an unrestored Model 5 EC in amboyna finish (s/n 20030) - went for £1400 (plus 15% buyers premium and 15% VAT). Bidding was brisk - exclusively on the phone - this is box was most likely bought sight unseen. Bidders in the auction room didn't get a look in - I gave up once it exceeded £800 (and factoring the cost of restoration). Expect to see it for sale again sometime soon. Chris Timson
Chris Algar would have been one of the bidders, I know from having been in an auction room in Corsham (near Bath) in very similar circumstances to you and then discussing the bidding with Chris some time later. I believe Chris gets people to inspect instruments for him on the inspection days, so that he has a fair idea of what he is bidding on.
