Hi, Looks like restoring will decrease value.

I now know with your help and advice that this concertina should really be passed on to a museum or collector.

So another old concertina for sale...

Jeff,

To be honest, if you were looking for an English concertina to play, you could have have done an awful lot better, especially with around a thousand pounds to spend. Indeed there have been a few bargain Englishes on eBay in the meantime, such as this playable late-'30s Crabb (only 3 days ago) for a maiden bid of £399.00; http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=190215011647&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=009, or better still this refurbished 1932 Wheatstone for £647.00; http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=300207012589&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=020, and if you really wanted a 19th century instrument, there was this largely-original, but retuned, top-quality Rock Chidley that went for £870.0; http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=220216242613&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=012.

But unfortunately you outbid the leading collectors to buy the Scates, so I'm afraid you might have to take a loss on it... :(

Stephen,

The concertina was chosen as it was the roughly the right age and was the closest I could find to the description I had been given. My family have been trying to trace a replacement for one that had been lost years ago. As it turns out it is no longer required.

So I take it you will be making quite a low offer then ;)
