Suggestions For Easing Back Into It

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I managed to strain the muscles in my right wrist pretty badly, and the result was three weeks wearing a wrist brace and no music! (Not to mention giving myself a hell of a fright! :o )

I've had the brace off for two weeks now and things seems to be pretty much back to normal, and while I really miss playing my concertina, I'm really worried that I'll strain my wrist again.

Can anyone give me any hints of how to ease back into playing again? I've thought of the two most obvious ones - play for a very short time, and stop immediately if it hurts, but is there anything else I could/should be doing?

With thanks

Morgana

Ease into it, a little at a time.

Stretch! Before playing, after playing, during pauses in playing. Your doctor or, if you have one, a physical therapist can suggest stretches appropriate to your condition.

Strength training: again, get help, but even simple exercises using very small weights can help prevent injuries like this.

I use a device called the Wrist Want (here) that helps with stretching, and use it during breaks in playing.

And don't play through pain. Bad, bad idea that almost always makes things worse

Sttrrettchh, Morganna! And listen to Jim Besser's other good advice.

And you might put some time in with your other instruments while your concertina muscles are coming around. I believe there are theraputic effects in playing most music and with most instruments.

Best of luck,

Greg

Recently, I discovered the wonders of those Memory Foam mattress toppers and pillows. They are GREAT! They take the pressure off nerves and -- well, all pressure points, while you sleep or rest. Keeps things flowing.

I got a contoured anti-snore one for my husband (though, his snoring is so remarkable that I almost like to hear it), but I use it since he doesn't bother to, and it seems to have eased up my headaches a bit.

I have seen memory foam items in chain stores like Wal-Mart, but, the best quality and prices I've found for these are at http://overstock.com

They're like sleeping on clouds!

I am presently using the mattress topper sometimes, a contoured anti-snore pillow for the head, and another memory-foam pillow for the upper body/shoulders.

Just dont over exert yourself. you will know if you it is going to recur. Just have the presence of mind. Or a little ice can help a lot :)

Is this a time-release thread, or what?

Just ease into it. It took weeks before I could do the stretch properly.

BTW, I lost my wrist wand at a Morris gig; hafta order a new one.
