6 anglo concertinas comparison "blind test" (irish)
papawemba replied to papawemba's topic in Concertina Videos & Music
yes super subjective ! Somehow I always go back to the Lachenal...Too bad it is a 20b but I like it. I'll probably will sell it someday...Yes I see what you mean, I also like to play it loud ! The Eiru also has concertina reeds, the Eiru gold is described as their top of the line (described by them). I think the right side of the Morse sound very good, when played loud ! Not so much when played slowly...but I think this is the limit of Hybrid (my 20b Lachenal sound very good even when played gently) -

Thank you LR71 and Tiposx for your interest ! No need to stretch out the suspense...here it is : #1 Wheatstone Linota: My favorite but was a bit too small. #2 Eiru Gold: I think the sound is very similar to the Wheatstone, less sweet on higher notes #3 Kensington: It has a distinctive voice, it was a few years ago #4 Morse Ceili: The one hybrid here: Yes I think hybrid is a bit harder to record, need a better mic #5 Basic 20b Lachenal: I like it π #6 7Mount small model: A super super fast concertina !! (way faster than me π Unfortunately, the record is not the best That's it folk Nicolas -

Ho yes the Kensington ! Maybe I sold it too quickly, I was a beginner (but broke). Ha ha yes it is in the audio... No worry Tiposx ! And you are right about the first 3, they sound a bit similar... Not so easy to tell from a not so good audio. Nicolas -

Not all the concertina are in there π But to tell you the truth, I forgot what I sold you π Such bad memory...What was the concertina ? He he Tiposx, I think you will be surprise ! But I think the recording does not do justice to the real sound... -
Hi, I just had fun doing this... You can hear 6 different Anglos I once owned (still have 3 of them though). One of them was 2 or 3 years ago ! (but I am still a beginner, advance one ;-)) I found some recording on my computer, the same tune with same mic (Mac) so just for fun, a blind comparison. Maybe you will recognize one of them ? (If any interest, I will give the model when the time is right :-)). (number 6 had less chance, it was recorded in another room and the result is not so great) Nicolas

Fully Restored Jones Miniature 22 Button C/G Anglo

Interesting price for an interesting concertinas...I am tempted ! Hope to hear a recording before it is sold π -
I recently acquired an Edgley in DG; Wheatstone layout. I believe it is an older model, Frank told me it is the same model used by Sean O'Dwyer in the album βIrish trad concertina from Beara" (amazing playing !). It is in excellent condition and has been looked and tuned by Frank Edgley two months ago. I tried vintage DG concertina before and found it a bit slowβ¦Not this one ! Have to say it is very fun to play ! But I prefer the sound of concertina reeds. The wood and sound are beautiful. It has Voci Armoniche "a manoβ reeds. Selling it for 2000 euros with case, can send it anywhere. Sending it from Montreal till 22nd of August then from Belgium. (A trade might be possible for concertina reeds one, 26 or 30b, in BbF). Best Nicolas

Hello everyone, I decide to lean toward Clare style, also fun to play π (but harder that one can think, Mary MacNamara dominates her concertina π Anyway, as an eternal beginner, I seem to make more progress in that style. I am really looking to find a copy of Terry Bingham CD but can't find anything π If someone has a copy I could buy ? Or can help with having it as mp3 ? (don't want to steal anything and can send money to Terry). Better if the music stay alive than in a drawer π Thank you,
-
This is probably because of the return policy...But maybe he will accept if you make it sure you won't send it back... But Chris is a man of value so not sure it will work.

Also heard good thing about the Marcus ! And one is for sale at Barleycorn π

Hi PaulDa321, no sorry never tried the Phoenix...It was on my "eventually wanted" list...but then gave up just because it felt strange to play Irish with a concertina made in China.

Hello Peter, I once got The Clare and the Clover (not at the same time) so maybe I can help...from memory ! It is all very personal so maybe it will help, maybe not. Once owned the Clare and the Morse Ceili at the same time and had to choose one...it was a though choice. I did prefer the sound of the Clare but the Morse was much louder and bigger (large hand) and faster player (not me ;-)). Finally kept the Morse because of the louder sound that filled the room and also very light and faster. But then I sold it because the tone wasn't my taste; I did regret a bit the Clare. Anyway, this is to say I really enjoyed the Clare. I also really liked the Clover but sold it because the air button was kind of hard to reach...not sure why ! Maybe a bit misplaced or maybe because the hand strap was very thick (I think this is the reason). The Clover and the Clare are quite different...Here is a quick comparison (from what I remember π) : * The Clare : - Smaller than the Clover. I have big hand and it didn't bother at all. - Sound doesn't project as much as the Clover. It is kind of loud but not sure how to explain, it doesn't feel like it fills the room. - Tone is kind of sweeter, I want to say closer to a real concertina (meaning not a hybrid). * Clover : - Sound is Crisper than the Clare, louder, bigger size. It also has a nice tone but different, brighter. If you need to be heard (session...), I would choose the Clover. In a more intimate setting, I would choose the Clare (but still loud π If I had to choose today between one of them, I would choose the Clare because I liked the sound and air button was easy to reach (for me). Both seems of very good quality. Donβt know your background and goal, both are a good choice but will probably not be your last concertina ! But a huge step up from the Rochelle π Nicolas

I received a quite fast response from Sean π Very kind. He will look if he can resurrect an old copy... Crossing finger....

Thank you Leah pointing out this cd ! I love it (from the samples above). Now also looking for a copy...I emailed him...let's wait and see. Nicolas

Anyone know if the cd is still available ? Or if someone has a copy for sale ? Thank you !! Nicolas

When I was saying "you don't always know which key they are playing in", I was talking about the concertina π Maybe I should have written in which position they are playing. What I usually do is to transcribe the tune as played then with abc online tune transposer (https://www.abctransposer.de/), I change the key to see which one is closest (meaning flow like) to the tune I hear. For exemple, some triplet ornamentations flows very well in one key but not the other...it's a match ! then I know they are playing with a C/G or a Bb/F or...Not always easy but fun π Hope it is clear... Best
-
Yes that is not always easy from a recording because you don't always know which key they are playing in... Ornamentation can give some clues to where they are playing on the concertina. You can also eventually hear the change of bellow direction. Finding the way to play it is the harder part !! But a lot of fun π Nicolas

Hi Sean, sorry it is not laminated ! Maybe you could try 3D print Jay's concertina, I believe it will resist all weather conditions π He can create 20b or 21b or 26b orβ¦he is very creative. Best

[closed -- bought one!] WTB: double-reeded 20b anglo
papawemba replied to Leah Velleman's topic in Buy & Sell
Beautiful concertina !! I would choose the same, vintage's concertinas have something special. I would really like to hear it if one day you feel like putting a record... Enjoy ! Nicolas -
Wow thank you for that in depth review ! So welcome. And you seem to be sooo happy, great for you !! and very tempting of course π I am finally getting used to a 30b, or getting to understand the advantages (for Irish)... But yes so many tunes can be played on a 20b, and the extra button is great. I wonder why he does not had an extra on the left side too with a Bb...maybe the reeds are larger and no extra room for the size... Best Nicolas

Thank you Peter...of course :-) but those are demo vids in shop (publicity)...I am talking about people who actually bought the concertina. Nicolas
