How Do I Date A Concertina?

Pete Hopkins

Recommended Posts

I'm sure there must be somewhere on this site that documents manufacturers models and gives some idea of when individual instruments were made, based on serial number. But I can't find it!

My own personal interest is in dating a Lachenal Edeophone 56609, but I'd also like a more general appreciation.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Ask her out - buy her some flowers and chocolate

I didn't think Edeophones were that easy! :o

Pete, there was also an informative discussion on Lachenal history and the various models with some links to articles earlier in the Concertina History forum. http://www.concertina.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=933 should take you there.

Wes Williams' 2001 article on dating places #56609 around 1928-9.

When my paper for PICA is published it will become evident that many of the parameters for dating Lachenal instruments are incorrect, as my research has revealed that Lachenal's own production started later, and ended sooner, than had been believed. Also, the receipt for the sale of Edeophone 58887 shows that it was sold in July 1923, so this one is probably slightly older than that.

Only the "common" Edeophones, the amboyna ones play much more hard to get !

Yep, except it ain't "play".

Mine requires love, commitment, and a gentle touch.

Flowers & chocolate are taken for granted. :)

Pete -

I got exactly the same responses when I first published the article - old jokes never die?

The article only used a graphical approach for a rough estimate, and Lachenal production/sales dropped in later years (they closed early/mid 1930s), so somewhere about 1915/1920 is a good guess, as Stephen suggests.
