  1. i venture to say its button pressure for you. thinking your springs are too strong. some old jeffries with small buttons actually hurt the fingertips after a short while. then there is hook action which requires higher spring pressure. lower level instruments always have higher spring pressure as a rule as to make a seal with a poor action. now a note to all the jeffries players i don't mean to say your action is poor design, it just needs spring adjustment if it hasn't been done already. LTD, it takes many years to become one with the instrument, especially when you start at an age above knee-high. w.
  2. its not uncommon to see original leather chamois under the buttons though. i don't think in the long run they are as quiet but do hold up longer.
  3. Ah, i see now. going over to the english side. well all the luck to you. w.
  4. Goodness! Another player located within a days drive from me... hope you are selling to move up and not quitting
  5. forgot to add that the case and instrument are made of some fancy burl wood, maybe amboyna. I don't mean to sound that it won't need the work that Marien listed and more, but that it is worthy of the work. possibly.
  6. Not to belabor the topic, but the Wallis looks to be a top model of its type. Let's see, gold leaf pattern on the bellows with fancy papers. Metal inlay on the faces. Those are metal buttons, btw. It's just the photos are a bit blurry. the thumb straps even have gold leaf designs. The reeds look to have a little rust and there are some areas on the chamois seal that are slightly black indicating leakage which may be warping, but who knows. The bellows look in good shape, no heavy rubbed areas. So overall if it doesn't go too high i think it has potential to be a very good instrument but it is always a gamble. hope the seller puts it back together right, and doesn't bugger up the screws...I bought a high end wheatstone that needed quite a bit of service, and the biggest is that it is tuned so high i really don't want to change it to modern, so will lose on that end. good luck. wes.
  7. I would tend to agree with the last two opinions. There is another English on ebay uk now that shows much more potential, a Wallis. much finer construction, but will need some work and i think worth the time. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=140312215651
  8. Hi Jim, Wondering if has a Jeffries layout or Wheatstone. Most likely Jeffries but thought I'd ask. wes.
  9. Well thank all of you! Guess that settles it. I was hoping it was a modern made instrument, it has such a sweet tone. wes
  10. Love the sound of this concertina, and I've seen this type played by others on the Comhaltas website. Wondering if any of you experienced sharp-eyed folks can tell the maker. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PoPKvrD-9jw...feature=related
  11. Well that one was a great one to repost, I'll say! All the edges are skived on the traditional bellows, except the edge that goes up to the finished outer wood on the frame of reed pan. Also what is different from Bob's bellows is the skiving of the the paper board edges on the outside edge of the "mountain" peak, verses the "valley" edge. good luck. w.
  12. All this time i thought that the highly contrasting stitch and wonderful design of your suit would have kept it from sticking to itself, yourself. maybe you should try an extra heavy dusting of gold bold talc as mentioned in the previous posts before giving up on it, and wear it to your next formal only. At least you wouldn't stick to anyone else!
  13. I'll second that resounding cheer for Brian! I can't get enough of his clips on utube; the singing and box playing are first-rate!! Live, now that would be a real treat.
  14. sometimes the pad face is the cut side and on others the hair side, sometimes mixed if only some replaced. maybe to avoid this problem, just use the cut or flesh side of leather? btw, isn't my new bunny avatar the cutest!! we play together in the evenings, and have been getting on rather famously. i found him playing in a ragtag gypsy band (horrible dissonant stuff hope you never have to hear it), pulled him out of the briar patch cleaned him up and introduced him to irishtrad! he is eternally grateful to me for it, as well he should be. maybe you'll hear him one day; he squeezes a mean box for a bunny!
