groeswenphil
Hi, Trying to learn this Morris tune, Old Molly Oxford.....also known as Step Back. See it here :- http://www.banjolin.co.uk/tunes/pdfs/oldmollyoxford.pdf and http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=gKZHUWznlMY The video, I suspect Peter Trimmings is playing in the key of C? I need to play it in the key of D I play a D/G Marcus. I never manage to get much accompaniment going in the key of D. How should I approach this? Thanks, Phil
Dave Rogers
Hi Phil I play this tune on a G/D box, across the rows, and I think (from my limited knowledge of musical theory) I must be playing it in G (first note is a pull on the third button in on the D row, right hand - which according to the charts I've seen is a "G"). I don't know how I'd go about playing it in D (playing by myself does have its advantages as I can use whatever key I like!), but I'm sure someone like Chris Timson will be along soon to advise... groeswenphil
Yep.....that is indeed how it goes. I've no trouble playing the tune.....but I'd like to be able to add some sort of accompaniment but I'm not to good at doing this in D

groeswenphil
Actually I play melodeon. Don't know whether I'd get a nice accompaniment in D on a melodeon though. Phil
David Barnert
Yep.....that is indeed how it goes. I've no trouble playing the tune.....but I'd like to be able to add some sort of accompaniment but I'm not to good at doing this in D Here's the chords I play, added to tallship's abc notation. Mind you, though, I play it on a Hayden Duet. X:1 T:Old Molly Oxford, Fieldtown T:Step Back, Fieldtown M:2/2 L:1/8 A:Fieldtown P:A(A2B2)3A2 K:D P:A "D"d2cd "A"e2f2|"A"e2dc "G"Bcd2|"A"c2A2 "G"B2G2|"D"A2AG FGA2| "D"d2(3edc "G"B2AG|"D"F2A2 d4 |"D"F2(3FED "A"E2C2|"D"D4 D4 || P:B "D"AGFE D2EF|"G"G2A2 B2"A"c2|"D"dcBA "G"G2A2|"G"Bcdf "A"e2ce| "G"d2Bd "A"c2A2|"G(or Em)"BGEF G2B2|"D"AGFE D2EF|"G"G4 G4 || In the 3rd to last measure, where I've written "G(or Em)" the notes of the tune outline an Em triad, but I play the G, which works fine. Sometimes when I'm feeling really perverse, I'll end the performance with a C chord on the very last measure instead of the G.
