San Diego Concertina Club

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am trying to interest anyone reading this in coming to a meeting of the as yet unformed San Diego Concertina Club. I and Mary (whome I have met exactly once) would like to get together with other similarly inclined players/interested parties, for some Concertina playing and Comradery.

We have been thinking of Shakespear Pub and Grill, Monday the 25th at around 6:30-7:00pm until perhaps 9:30? It's a week night. Thursday the 28th of April is a possibility, too.

Please, if you are at all interested, please write an answer to this message. Encouragement encouraged.

If the night or time chosen doesn't work for you, please write and express that, too. Same for the place. Though I like Shakespear's!

Where (Preliminary-to be determined):

3701 India St.

San Diego, CA 92103

When (Preliminary-to be determined):

6:30 - 9:30pm

Monday April 25th

If you can make it, please come. It could be fun.

Thank you,

Aquarussell

Russell Hedges

Thanks, Aquarussell, for starting a SD concertina club.

Monday, April 25, at the Shakespeare pub works for me. See you there! I may get there closer to 7 than 6:30, depending on traffic.

Would love to come but alas a wee bit too far for me but I have told a mate in San Diego who plays the piano....and guitar as well as being a professional ventriloquist (!) and I hope he gets in touch.

You may find if you turn into a session you will also get other players who are not necessarily on a tina but make for a great musical gathering and everyone learns tunes from the others.

Such as we have at the George Inn in London organised by Chris Gibb of gigcb.com with Alan and Clive below.

We get four or five tinas(anglos, English, Duets incl. Jeffries and Edeophones), same for melodeons, some French accordions, fiddles, cellos, guitars, flutes, recorders, harmonicas, hurdy gurdies, saxes, bodhrans, harmonium, spoons, triangles, tambourines, tin whistles, clarinette, French, Galician and Northumbrian bagpipes.

On this youtube, ascending from the guitarist on the left(he runs a sea shanty group too, as well as playing concertina) you will see our very own Chris Drinkwater, then Clive Williams who runs Tune of the Month on Melodeon.net and then Alan Day composer and player of this Parish....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avqkIeHNSn8

and here there are tinas all over the place, literally, with everything else including a stainless steel chest washboard from Mississippi and triangle played by one of the UK's outstanding session percussionists.

And it will be happening again at Bradfield this July at the Eighth Traditional Music Weekend*

Hello Kautilya,

Thank you for the encouraging message. It would be ideal if something like that came about. Ultimately we would like some sort of get together for concertina players either in San Diego, or someplace close. The club is on, and efforts to find existing events to join in with, or venues for events of our own, will be a topic of great importance to us.

We have a Maritime Museum here, a good one I think. They have a festival for sea music, this years isn't scheduled yet. I will post about that when I know more.

Thanks again, I wish I could go to sessions like the one you described, but it is a bit far.

Oh, this is AWESOME!

I try and make it out!

I'm an Anglo player, exclusively traditional Irish session music. Noel Hill has been my primary influence. Been playing for about 7 years now.

FYI, for scheduling, Tuesday and Sunday nights are the big Irish session nights here in town, and I can't make it on Wednesdays so Monday works great.

Cheers,

Michael

Lovely museum

Wish you all the best... and dont forget to video/tape your gatherings as it also brings in future participants and supporters who just come to listen. :)

Thank you everyone for you interest.

I will borrow a camcorder for the meeting, that's a great idea.

We can't play in the pub. Shakespeare Pub and Grill can't allow live music, as they aren't licensed for it! The have applied for a license to allow live music (which, according to the City of San Diego includes jukeboxes, and isn't limited to professonal paid entertainers) and hope to be approved sometime in the next six or seven months. In the meantime, they are afraid to allow it at all.

So, any ideas? Shall we meet there anyway, and play across the street? Or does someone have an idea for someplace else to go?

Thanks all,

Aquarussell

Anyone have a line on a school or homeowner's society rec room or church meeting hall? Or we could meet at someone's house...

Hello!

We will meet at Shakespeare Pub, and play across the street in the El Indio parking lot. Or the sidewalk. I'll try to bring chairs.

I will seek out some other place to meet. Every month? A group this size, we could meet at someone's house. But I hope that others would like to do this. We need to talk, and to find out how we can best do this.

In any case, first meeting April 25 2011, 7:00 or 7:30 to 9:30. Anyone and everyone invited.

Thank you Mary and Michael, for your intererest and enthusiasm!

Great, see you tonight. I have a couple of instruments I'm bringing along at least for show-and-tell even if we may be restricted from playing.

I'll also have my iPhone and iPad 2 with me if anyone wants to check out my Anglo and English concertina apps.

I've also passed the word along to three other players in town, hopefully they'll come down tonight.

Lovely time last night at the Shakespeare, can't believe I've never been there all the time I've been in San Diego.

Since it was too loud at the pub to play, and there was some concern about the lack of a cabaret license, we setup shop across the street on the sidewalk and had a few tunes in the clear night air. Got some mighty strange looks. :-)

The plan is that this will continue on with monthly weekend meetings at someone's house, details upcoming.

I'll also get in touch with 4 other local players to invite them to the next meeting.

Russell, thanks again for arranging this!

Cheers,

Michael

I had so much fun playing with two other concertina players! It was an inspiration to learn tunes from memory instead of relying on the written music as I have been doing for the past five months. I am looking forward to another meeting; it is wonderful that Michael will invite others to join us. I want to add my thanks to Russell for organizing this.

Yes, a good time was had by all. I laughed with joy to see the i-phone and i-pad applications played. Wonderful! Hearing Mary and Michael play together was very nice, beginner and experienced, english and anglo playing together. That kind of thing is why I want to do this more.

We will post about the next event when we have a time date, and place figured out.

I would like to plan a "Drive Bye Dance" where we converge on a place, and play/dance there, then move on. Anoyone interested?

Thank you Mary and Michael! It was fun, and we will do it again.

Hi Pete. Pedant alert. It's Chris Shaw, who runs the the French session, at The George Inn, not Chris Gibb, whoever he is. ;)

What about talking to the Midway aircraft carrier people ( http://www.midway.org/hours-tickets )On high holidays (from 10 - 1700 hours) you could have an occasional daytime get together on board and offer to include some sea shanty tunes and seafaring songs (old and new such as Shoals of Herring etc etc). They could offer you free snacks and refreshments and of course you and they would gain from the publicity and increased traffic and could 'pipe' you around the vessel. (I see there is a parking issue but they must have some of their own spaces. And with Eskin's i-expertise there must be some electronic companies who might be happy to be an occasional host for digital and acoustic sessions which would pull in some "youngsters" That also moves you around venues in town.....
