You might also have a look at the Stark layout. Here's a like to one that's actually available.

Not quite as 'space age' as that metal ended Lachenal EC from a few weeks ago, but definitely non-standard fretwork.

David and Karen, it's the 3rd thread. Here's the link
BTW, as you can see it's actually a minimum 2%, which is pretty reasonable for all of the exposure that your instrument gets!

I'll bet they could make us a square one with no trouble at all.

Thank you, Gentlemen, for your insights!

This may be for Wolf or Comzertino but who is the best carrier to use when shipping from Germany to US? FedEx and UPS are just too expensive and the EU doesn’t seem to have the same type of courier service as the UK.
I’d appreciate any advice!
kind regards,
Rod

Alan, sent you a PM.

Steve, if you don't want this, I'd like to be next in line. And, I'm in the US.

Not wanting to broadcast but has anyone heard any more about Geoff?

As my wife says, we'll keep our thumbs on hold for your speedy recovery, Geoff!

+1 on Gary's books, and they're even useful if you read the dots. I haven't really warmed up to Tabs yet. I'm also told the Bertarm Levy's book (Anglo Concertina Demystified?) is really good ... I haven't bought it yet, though so can't speak from experience.

I've got an interesting situation with a Lachenal Maccann that I purchased. It appears to be tuned 1/4 comma meantone on the push and equal tempered on the pull. Has anyone seen this before? It could just be the whim of the previous owner, who was a singer.
Kind regards,
Rod

Knock wood, but to date, I've not seen any scammers or Nigerians (I know quite a few honest ones) on c.net!
-
I've had too much of the I'll pay you extra and then you pay my shipper routine. But I did have the reverse happen to me with a C.Net purchase, where i was having issues with bank transfer and attempted to just send the money to the seller via Western Union. WU took the money and then called me an hour later and cancelled the transaction because they thought it was a scam. They asked me if I knew the person that I was sending to and I said that we'd corresponded and that it was a part of a purchase but they refused to wire the money.
First time I've had that happpen!

Well, if you really wanted one, I could ship it to you.

Its a shame the maker doesn't ship to the UK.
Just curious if you asked? He seemed like a pretty reasonable fellow when I corresponded with him.

+1 on Chris and I've visited that fabled shed. But on this side of the pond, Greg, you do a pretty fine job of placing concertinas yourself.
-
I've been looking for cases for my larger concertinas and have been lurking to Etsy, since old industrial cases show up there. However, this caught my eye, especially as he makes them custom and so could probably do any size and then all you would have to do is finish to your liking.

I've been the luckiest with UPS and Fedex, but UPS seems to be able to track across borders more easily. Your experiences, of course, may vary.

Mike, you need to post some pictures for us who are in search of Crane porn.

Having read this, I went and checked my bellows and in my stable, (and remembering the Herrington, too) the anglos did seem a bit more flexible, although the 57b Crabb is just as much so, and its bellows are not original, but its reeds are set up like an anglo. It couldn't have to do with that difference, could it?

Hi Arkwright,
I’d checked with Geoff Crabb and my 8837 is from 1907. It’s a 57b Crane. Interesting (to me anyway) that the reeds are laid out like an Anglo instead of around the outside.
-
Hi Vern, I have 8837 (1907) and used to have 9987 (1941). 9442 is obviously in between those dates. Maybe early 30s?

Rod;
Maccann No. 894 is not especially easy to date, but my best estimate is circa 1890-1891. Inside No. 729 was written "John Thomas, Concertina Soloist, March 4 1896". But I am certain that this entry was made several years after the manufacture. If he bought it in 1890-1891, five years later would have been about the right time for a tune-up/repair at which time the inscription could be made while it was opened up.
Dowright,
Alex has opened up Maccann No 894 and found a pencil inscription; 'G.R.B. 8/3/96'. So this tracks with your idea about No. 729, or they were running a special on Maccann repairs in 1896!
WTB: Distressed Crane duet

That or the seller bids it up. That was a significantly distressed Crane to be sure, Steve and fetched a lot more than it seemed to be worth.
