So, having given this some more thought and sadly deciding against a lovely 69 key Crabb, what are my options (other than Maccan) for a range from C-2 to c2? I'm assuming that's C below the bass staff to c above above middle c. EC or Duet?
Sorry, just don't respond with Piano accordion!

Another from the US.

A number of people worry
'Bout their box being in the right key
Here's my secret confession
When I play in a sesssion
I don't worry, because I play EC
Something about "when the only tool that you have is a hammer ..."

Steve, are you going to be at the NESI?
I don't think this year, but since I now have a concertina AND Melodeon, it's a shame not to get to see other players and enjoy listening and playing.
That's why I wondered. If you were going I'd just ask to get it from you there.

That's right - lowest is G on right and highest is A on left (lower middle row).
Also forgot to mention, 7 fold bellows.
I've seen only a few similar 60 key baritones in the ledgers.
Steve
Steve,
That's a beautiful instrument, to be sure. Congratulations!

I love those low notes on the TT, but there's nothing quite like that low F, on a Baritone!
I agree, Dick. The gent that I bought the Morse from sold his brace of concertinas to acquire a Dipper Baritone EC. His has a low E onboard. I still have dreams about that sound!
Cheers!

It's my first ... but I'm anxious to see about the concertina orchestra!
-
You are most fortunate. The gentleman that I bought my Morse from had almost mortgaged all for a lovely Dipper Baritone EC with keys down to low E!!!!!! He played it for me when I picked up my purchase and I realized how far my journey had to go.

Killinois,
You might consider Baritone English. A bit lower for chords and singing accompaniment and some room for melody. Listen to John Looms Youtube video of the Morse Albion Baritone. It's a better hybrid instrument. Then, if it's appealing, you can call me about mine because I'm really wanting a 69 key Crabb Crane Duet from Chris Alger and need to raise the funds.
What a shameless plug .... I'm so sorry!

Jeffn,
I'm fairly new too but you might look at the Northeast Squeeze-In later this month as a place to start. Check the Button Box website (http://www.buttonbox.com) for more details.
-
It really depends on what you want to play. But, I'd love to play that 64-key Baritone treble
-
New England Squeeze-In is only 3 weeks away, but I don't see any discussion of it here. I'm going, and taking my lady of 38 years with me too (she claims to have contradanced once or twice, or about equal to me
Some questions I have:
1. Will there be a concertina Orchestra this year? If so, who's conducting -- Rachel Hall? What are we playing?
2. I may want to lead an informal session on playing written arrangements on the Hayden or other DUet -- shoud I jsut put this up on the bulletin board?
3. Should I be directing these quesitons to The Button Box?
4. Is there a pinned thread somewhere here that I should be using?
Thanks, Mike K.
I got my 'official' notice today in the post but noticed that the header says Sept 25, 26, 27 and the schedule says Sept 19, 20, 21. I hope that the Sept 25 date is still correct or I'll need to scrabble on airline reserations!

Who me ? Alias , naw !
FInding a decent accordeon new or used is a bit difficult if you live in the States.
Thanks for the replies
Beermo Garfuliack
I'll second that. I got the bug for a Pokerwork just to see how it plays. No chance under $900 unless you buy something like a C/F which would be unusable in the Morris world. What's a feller to do?
-
It's really too bad because Portsmouth is such a great town. I used to get to visit my company's main office there at least quarterly. Would love to visit both events but that would be a bit of a frantic drive from Western MA to be sure
-
I looked at the web info and would love to see it. Does anyone know how to find out where it will be playing in the US? Is it independent venues?
-
Now that I have instruments worth insuring, how do we do this in the US?
Thanks for this thread!

I'll offer this up ... but it makes me realize how rusty I am at Limericks ... best get practicing on those too
After watching concertinas from afar
I thougt buying a 'Jack'was on par
With my budding desires
BUt my passion caught fire
And I now have a Crane from Algar
Compare wife to a 'tina, it's plain
Having more than one may cause one pain
Yet I find that I savor
More than one single flavor
Hence my three: Lachenal, Morse and Crane
Darn ... I still have more work to do today
With an Anglo, you push and you pull
An English, you've got your hands full
It's said Crane has logic,
Midi's technologic,
And Mccann, that's like riding a bull!
That's enough ....
-
Thanks, Mikea. It's sounding like the notes below C-1 didn't follow as common a standard as the regular 55-key and less versions.
Andrew, that would be interesting if someone would make a crane again. I don't know if I'd have enough spare body parts to sell to buy one and still be able to play it.
-
What's the term? We'll break it down into its Latin components and find out
-
So, based on Kurt's layout, I'd need something like a 67 key to achieve that C-2 that I've always dreamed of ... based on my 55 key layout + 5 keys per 4th (including accidentals) and the final low C-2. Do such animals exist or does the fingering become 'custom' above 55 key? Is Crabb the only maker of bigger Cranes?
I do appreicate everyones responses.
-
You might also keep an eye out on eBay for concertinas sold by cocoa111, which is Chris Algar's seller name. In fact, you might email him and see what he's got. I know that he has had a couple of Lachenal trebles recently in the 600 - 800 GBP range. It's not a Jackie but another data point for you to consider on your search.
Also, check with the dealers listed here on c.net (shameless plug, to be sure)
-
What ranges of Crane exist beyond 55 key? I've seen fingering charts for Crabb that extend beyone 70 keys. I'm curious about the left hand getting below (is it?) C1.
I'll be interested in any responses. Dirge, at least I bought a Wheatstone
Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival or NESI?

Apparently, these are normally on adjoining weekends but this year there was an issue with the venue for the NESI. It's a shame biecause I'd hoped to attend both since I used to work out of Portsmouth.
Ah, but there's always next year!
