  1. Scarborough's annual Seafest was as good as ever, this last weekend. Several concertina players spotted, including Keith Kendrick and Dick Miles:
  2. I reported it to Ebay, and the Jeffries listing has now gone. If you think there are any other items this chap has listed that look like scams, perhaps you could report them? It may be that the account has been hijacked by fraudsters. John
  3. This looks familiar: Ebay Jeffries Do I catch the smell of fish? John
  4. John, It's one of "George Jones' Newly Improved Piano Concertinas" (as they were advertised), an earlier version of the Jedcertina. Many thanks Stephen - previous threads most informative. I don't think I'll be bidding.... Regards John
  5. What on earth is this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NICE-VINTAGE-ANTIQUE...%3A1%7C294%3A50 Is it some sort of hybrid? I've never seen one like it. John
  6. Tennants of Leyburn are holding a sale tomorrow, Saturday 14th February that includes a number of concertinas - including some tasty looking Anglos. See: http://www.tennants.co.uk/BidCat/Catalogue...+now=Submit+now Best regards John
  7. Possibly not - as I understand it, VAT is payable on the commission (buyer's premium?), not on the final hammer price (unless the person consigning an item to auction is themselves VAT registered). For example, if the hammer price is £3,400, with a 15 per cent buyer's premium added (£510), VAT would be payable on the £510 (X 17.5 per cent = £89.25). Also, isn't VAT reclaimable for buyers who live outside of the European Union eg, 'Colonial Cousins' from across the pond wink.gif ? Again, as you said, others who may be better informed can correct us if we've got it wrong. John

  13. Can anyone recommend any good books or DVDs on repairing and restoring old concertinas? Having well and truly caught the bug, my current tally is one Rochelle anglo, one beautiful Norman Anglo that I can't keep my hands off, and a newly arrived, very cheap, and slightly sorry Lachenal 48 button English. The Lachenal needs some work; the bellows look like they'll need some patching but should be salvageable, and one or two of the keys are sticking or not sounding on both push and draw. It was very cheap, so worth treating as a first restoration project. The problem is that I've no idea where to start, although I have found David Leese's web site. Can anyone suggest a good book or DVD that might point me in the right direction? Something along the lines of "An idiot's guide to concertina restoration" perhaps? Thanks John
  14. Here are some pictures: Also, apologies for error in the name of 1 auctioneer - it is Windibank, not Windbank as previously stated. I think you'll need to register with the auction site to access the catalogues through them (it's free). I was already logged into the site when looking earlier and checking the links from C-net. Hope that doesn't cause any difficulties John
  15. Any UK members local to Surrey and Cheshire might be interested in some interesting looking concertinas coming up for auction in the next few days. A Wheatstone http://www.ukauctioneers.com/LotDetails.aspx?lot=1035442 and Lachenal http://www.ukauctioneers.com/LotDetails.aspx?lot=1035402 (both English) at PF WIndbank auctioneers in Dorking, and a nice looking 30 key Anglo http://www.ukauctioneers.com/LotDetails.aspx?lot=1033241 at Marshall's auctioneers in Knutsford. The estimate for the anglo seems very low. Only wish I was closer to either of them. John
  16. Thanks for the info everyone - it's been very interesting. It does seem that even with the added import costs, importing from the USA or Canada can give very real savings for potential UK buyers. Also, delivery delays seem much shorter as well. Once again, Thanks John
  17. Have any UK members got recent experience of ordering an Anglo from any of the North American makers? I'm thinking primarily Messrs Edgley, Morse, Tedrow here. Obviously, UK buyers would get hit with VAT and a handling fee from whatever bunch of clowns do the delivery at this end, but are there any import duties on top of that? Anything else to watch out for? Also, apart from the makers' own web sites, are there any useful places where I could hear soundfiles of the different North American models as well as those in the UK? I've tried www.anglo-concertina.net, which is excellent, but would like to listen to any other soundfiles out there. Thanks John
  18. Hi - I think it should be OK if you want to back out of this deal. If the original listing or second chance offer says you can use Paypal, but he's now going back on that, then Ebay should accept that as a valid reason for you to cancel the deal, if that's what you want to do. If he persists, and wants to carry on, tell him you aren't happy with his choice of escrow/delivery service and want to use one of your own. I understand that escrow costs are normally met by the buyer, so it shouldn't matter to him if you want to arrange to use a different escrow service. Again, if he refuses, withdraw from the deal. You may get a non-paying bidder warning from Ebay if by some chance he's a genuine seller (which seems doubtful); if so, refer them to the web page identified in the previous discussion on this board which suggests 'Global Shipping' is a fraudulent escrow service, and highlight the fact that he's not prepared to accept ppaypal now, after previously saying he would. The bottom line is what's the worst that can happen if you do cancel the deal? 1 negative feedback from someone who has nil feedback anyway? Hope this helps John
  19. John Can't help with MP3 files, but here are a couple in MIDI format. http://www.contemplator.com/sea/index.html Thanks Leo Thanks Leo - that's a great site. I can spend hours on it. Best regards John
  20. Hi, I'm a newbie on here, having just registered after lurking for a while. I recently bought a Rochelle from Concertina Connection, my first concertina since having a nasty East German box about 30 years ago. (It went out of tune within a few weeks). I chose an Anglo because I've been messing about with harmonicas and an old melodeon for years, and thought that experience would give me a bit of a head start. The only problem is that having started on the Rochelle, now I want to try playing an English concertina as well. Does anyone have a used Jackie they want to sell? (I can't afford to get one from CC yet, having bought the Rochelle so recently). I'm probably clutching at straws here, but I'm sure you all understand about concertina-buying want urges. Also, can anyone recommend a good source for sound files/mp3s of sea shanty tunes? Thanks John
