  1. I started in G/D almost immediately. My tutor recommended it based on the style of music I had expressed interest in. I love the sound and richness of tone, It suits my interests of English and Scandinavian folk perfectly. Not an answer, but an observation nonetheless!
  2. Today I took my concertina to our work team day. I had some funny looks, but it was well received on the whole - even though I only know 5 songs
  3. There are no fans when I'm playing. haha My 14 month old daughter is my only fan my 4 year old son walks around with his hands over his ears when I'm playing and my wife just about tolerates it
  4. So, I was merrily playing my new Edgley today, when I heard this strange fluttering sound coming from lots of different buttons! I was horrified, and thought there must be an issue! Opened it up and all was sound. Played again and the same thing! I went to ask my wife if she could notice it, and the fluttering vanished. It was then I realised that it must have been the fan next to me It was messing with the sound waves. Yes, I'm silly. I wanted to share - anyone else done it or am I alone in my stupidity?
  5. Who are you flying with? If it's EasyJet, you can pay €15 or so for A selected seat which gives you speedy boarding and two pieces of hand luggage. I have never flown with a concertina, but used to fly to Lisbon once a month with a laptop bag and fully knitted video bag too - never had any issues. I certainly wouldn't check it into the hold - nothing good happens to hold luggage!
  6. Likewise - The D40 gave me the bug, and whilst its limitations are boundless, it was worth the pain to then understand why a more expensive instrument is worth it!
  7. Just to update everyone (for those that care!) I have ordered some new leather valves from Charlie Marshall, and they should arrive at some point this week. In the meantime, I followed some online instructions and removed the problem valves, rolled them between my fingers and then reapplied once straightened. All is now playing really nicely. I will likely still replace the offending valves with new ones - but nice to have it playing well. Thanks for all advice!
  8. Thanks! I've just had a call from the ever helpful Graham Collicutt who gave me some advice to coax the valve back into shape. I have done this and the popping is noticably lessened. I'll keep playing and see if it sorts itself out. Might be a good idea to get some backup valves in the meantime though! Thanks again!
  9. It was built by Frank in 2015 and stored well I believe. I have spoken at length with the previous owner and he assures me it was kept in its case inside. I am no expert in valves - perhaps this is normal for a new Edgley? They seem to be made of leather or something that looks a lot like leather! All new to me! I will email Frank and see what he says, I just don't want to become bothersome to him!
  10. I wondered that too Rod - perhaps it just needs a good play to get everything moving as it should!
  11. Really beautiful album Jody - think this one will be on repeat for a while
  12. apologies for the GIANT photos - not sure what happened there!
  13. I ended up calling Frank, and he advised me it was likely a curled valve. I opened her up and sure enough there it was. I've added a couple of images - does anyone know a UK contact that could help with either the parts or if they are in Kent, could do the repair? Sorry to ask so many questions - I hope one day to be able to offer some advice of my own!
  14. Thanks again guys! I bought the concertina 'new', second hand - as in someone bought it and never played it. Its just over a year old - from the feel of it it's had very little play. Don, I didn't get the instructions, so will PM you my address. I've also contacted Frank, so hopefully he can help! Cheers Will
  15. Hello again! My edgley has now arrived and sounds lovely but I have one thing that I'd like the opinion of the group on please. I have noticed there is a slight flapping popping sound from one of the right hand keys. Like it is making a piece of paper move. Would this again be normal for a new box? Something that needs to be worn in or something that needs attention? I worry that the shipping process might have damaged it. Thanks in advance!
  16. Thanks everyone! I'm just going to play play play and not worry about it anymore That said, I do feel concertina acquisition syndrome is already beginning to happen Luckily my bank balance wont allow for any more right now!
  17. Thanks for all the input. From my side, I felt the links answered all the technical points I have, however as a new player (2 months) and having purchased an Edgley Professional G/D, I still feel a sense that I will always have something inferior compared to traditional instruments, which doesn't seem right when I've spent good money on something beautifully handmade, built by a very talented chap. This might just be my brain trying to get me to buy both a vintage and modern concertina, but who knows - I guess it will come down to what I prefer as my playing and taste matures with time spent with both instrument.
  18. Thanks Greg! I did a brief search but it got no results - clearly needed your skills! I'll read that lot
  19. This probably seems a silly question to many here, but apart from differences in sound, what are the physical differences between traditional concertina reeds and accordion reeds (in a concertina). Is it just a difference of material, or a different process in making them? How come builders of concertinas didn't stick with the old style reeds? Sorry in advance if some sort of war is created from this question, I'm just intrigued! I love the sound of both types of reed!
  20. Whatever happens I too would be happy to contribute financially. This community has already helped me a lot, and so I'm sure sending some cash to a member in need is the least I can do! Looks like a fun instrument too
  21. Thanks everyone for the comments and feedback I've now found a concertina that will hopefully serve me for many years to come!
  22. Thanks for that Fred. I did see your post, but I am hoping for G\D and out of personal preference, I don't like the look of lachenal bellows - just my own taste! Will
  23. Hi! I am on the lookout for a 30 button anglo, preferably in G/D tuning. I am on the waiting list for a Marcus Music concertina, but sadly, one of their main chaps has had to go into hospital and my order may consequently be lost for months to come... I'd be open to discussing most concertinas, but I have around £1500 to spend, so can't afford anything too flashy! Thanks!
  24. Hi John, I play Anglo, rather than English, which is a shame, and I'm nowhere near good enough to play with others yet, but once I feel confident, I will try to come along! Where do you meet usually? I will try and pop along on Sunday, just to say hello if I can (depending on family!)
