Andrew Baker – Concertina Maker

Recommended Posts

I am seeking information about an Andrew Baker, born in Germany, but a concertina maker of Birmingham, England in the mid 19th century.

I have to admit that this interest is from a genealogical point of view rather than my interest in concertinas, but I am advised that some members may find the subject interesting as although most of the trade was done in London, the Maccann family, who I understand will be well known to you, were connected to Birmingham.

In the 1861 England census, Andrew Baker was living with his family at 29 Moseley Street, Birmingham.

His occupation is given as Concertina Maker.

His family consisted of his wife Catherine and three daughters :

Andrew Baker (c.1832, born in Germany)

Catharine Baker (c.1833, born in Scotland)

Elizabeth Baker (c.1855, Birmingham)

Caroline Baker (c.1858, Birmingham)

Margaret Baker (c.1860 Birmingham)

Catharine is a widow in 1871 census, so Andrew must have died between 1861 and 1871.

I am guessing that Baker was not his given name and that he changed it after leaving Germany.

Any information will be gratefully received.
