Larry Stout
There's an EC on eBay ( http://cgi.ebay.com/JOHN-ALVEY-TURNER-CONC...1QQcmdZViewItem ) which says it was made by John Alvey Turner. I've never heard of this maker; is it a rebadge or one of the many early makers who didn't make the lists? This one looks old-- I think I see spruce baffles like in early Wheatstones. Stephen Chambers
John Alvey Turner was a dealer, the firm later specialising in banjos. The instrument looks like a Joseph Scates.
chris
Annie and I both thought it shouted Joseph Scates. I thought the name plate was in an unusual position though. I haven't seen one like that before. Does anyone else know of one in that position? chris

The earliest Wheatstones to have fretwork also have an oval metal name plate screwed on in that position, but this isn't one of them as the construction is otherwise different. (And I've got several of those!)
