Well, I'm in Denmark, not the UK, but I've done transfers both directions, and I wouldn't do it any way other than an electronic transfer from one bank account to the other. A note regarding currency exchange: My personal experience is that the "spread" (a "commission" by any other name is still a percentage) my Danish bank takes on exchanges is generally half as much as that American banks take, regardless of the direction of either the transfer or the conversion. I.e., I always have my Danish bank do the conversion, and the American bank never sees anything but dollars, and so I get a better exchange rate. I don't know where UK banks fit into this spectrum.
