Jody,
A quick reply, just to let you know that the tune already is hosted. Thanks for posting.
As I have a busy weekend and there is a lot going on with the Links page, it will take some time before the tune is inserted in the Links Page.
B.T.W.: great tune(s) in C as well as in G!
The tunes are now available on the Links Page at:

I am hoping to buy a new concertina (maybe a Marcus) in the not too distant future, but I am completely baffled by the choice of wooden or metal ends. Unfortunately I am not in the position to try either. I do not know of any other concertina players and the only shop in Belfast that sells concertinas is limited to Stagis in various disguises. I like the idea of the more mellow sound of the wooden ends, yet metal ends appear very attractive. I mostly play Irish music, including airs. Please help!
Nigel,
Generally spoken a wooden ended sounds less bright (and more mellow) than a metal ended concertina. But to make it more confusing for you, there are strong variations between brands. My wooden ended Geuns Wakker sounds louder (and a bit harsher) than my metal ended Marcus. Personally I am very satisfied with the sound of my Marcus (de Luxe model). The reason is probably a very thin layer of black foam just behind the metal ends. It prevents dust coming in, gives the metal ends a better look and gives the concertina a less metal-like sound. At the same time the Marcus can be loud enough for sessions.
I hope this helps

Unlike Henk, they don't come to me while I watch TV
Samantha
In your situation I should stare at Ailsa Craig
I agree with Henk - stare at Ailsa Craig. I'm the wrong side of the Irish sea. I'll make do with the mountains of Mourne.
Well Nigel.. we could stare together in October during the Arran Concertina Event

Nice example: 30 Years, klezmer on concertina.

It took me some time but found the page here.

Henk, you can link this one from the Recorded Tunes page, thanks!
Jeff
Thanks for your link. I have included it in the links page.
Thanks even more for this complete thread in which you shared the progress of your playing
B.T.W. after updating the page, I checked for broken links and found a few . I'm working on it.

THANKS A LOT Henk And THANKS A LOT to all of you who have submitted recordings! It's nice to hear tunes played by other C.Net members!!!)
Thanks Charlotte for your kind words
When You experienced Guys/Guyettes sit down to play a new tune, can you immediately spot when to place embellishments or do you experiment? Are there strict rules as to where to place embellishments? Or do you place them them where YOU feel they should be?Just speaking for myself (of course), when I learn a new tune I never bother about embellishments. I first get the tune in my fingers and after that I try to improve speed (when needed). After that embelishments are coming in. In my case they are dictated by the possibilities of the instrument and they just pop up while playing without thinking (for instance while I'm watching TV ).
By the time you play with others (in a small group) be sure that you have written down the music as you play it (and see what happens ). During sessions it's another thing! Just play the tune as basic as possible and listen to the others how they play it. Throw in your embellishments when possible. And what do you do, if you are playing together, if everyone has his/her own way of playing? -
Now its a funny thing you should mention the bar-b-q, but I've just experimented with dipping them in tomato ketchup overnight!!
It works suprisingly well and a little light boiling afterwards does no harm at all.
That looks like an interesting experiment. I assume that the ketchup contains some weak acid(s) in low concentration.
Can you describe exactly the effect(s) that you observed?

Well done Theo! It says more than a thousand words

...with pink beads! That should start the release party off with a bang!
Combining the two remarks above, I guess the release party will take place in a swimming pool

Light is appearing at the end of the tunnel!

Thanks for the update Henrik, it's looking great and very professional.
Looking forward to the next update and to see and hear the finished beauty

I’ll have to send Henk some of my Irish tunes. I play them like Jody, chords and all, but to my ear they are still clearly Irish.

Jody
You made me (and I guess more of us) very curious to hear your Irish tunes in "Jody style". I'm ready for it

When I go to the 'buy and sell' section, it tells me I haven't signed in. I then sign in, go to the 'buy and sell' and it tells me I haven't signed in. How do I get past this?
I have the same problem when submitting a tune to the Tune-o-Tron. I sign in. The system recognises me by replying "Hello Henk van Aalten". When I want to submit a tune, the system lets me know that I have to sign in..and so on.. and so on.. (for at least the last three months)

I'm not sure if it is OTM, but I'm fascinated by this tune I found about a week ago. It is a tune played by Henry Reed and it's called "Texas". Later I found a recording of Henry Reed himself. He plays the tune much faster.
I can play it over nad over again and it's "playable" on my C/G Anglo.
Edited to get the link right (posting from a Mac in Schotland is new for me )

But you're right, Michael, about reasons for crossing rows. Most tunes that I could play entirely on one row, I don't, because crossing rows helps with the fingering... or the rhythm... or the air.
Michael and Jim, you are absolutely right, but there a (still) a lot of tunes that I prefer to play on one row. Some examples for Geraghty:
Planxty Irwin (on the G row of my C/G)
Sheebeg an Sheemor (on the C row of my C/G)
Lord Inchiquin (on the C row of my C/G)
Shandon Bells (on the G row of my G/D)
Slieve Russel (on the G row of my C/G)
The concertina hornpipe (on the G row of my C/G)
etc. etc.

Oh Joy!
My marcus arrived today!!!
Congratulations with your Marcus Charlotte. My first "real" concertina was also a Marcus, and after 4 years it is still a big joy in my life!

Henk,
I think your animations are really wonderful - it would be great if you could make them available "off line" so to speak.
best wishes,
Peter
Thanks Peter for your kind words. I'm not sure which animations you mean:
Anyway.. most stuff that is published on the internet can be downloaded. Just right-click and use the "save as" option.
When I have more time in future I plan to do more with these kind of animations and maybe someday it will become available on CD

Now somewhere I have got Jody,Myself and Henk playing his CG in the upper register against the two GDs.
Now what have I done with it? I remember now, Henk still has it.
You might be right Al. Must be somewhere in the house...
First I'm off for a week to Schotland and when I'm back I will look for it

Jody Kruskal posted a new tune in this message.
Jody wrote about it:
It's now on the Recorded Tunes Page. Here is a great old time tune on the Anglo, Big Sciote, played on my Dipper G/D with the honking bass notes.Once again a great tune from Jody!

PS Could someone please do a link for me to the ebay item - as I've tried and failed - Thanks.
-
There's sound, too?? I don't hear anything- I just enjoy the pictures!
Yes there is!! Just hover your mouse-pointer over the heads of the players

That's pretty scary Henk, reminds me of the NE Squeeze-in last year. You claim that resemblance's are coincidental, but I swear that's Jim Lucas on the left.
Jody
That might be so Jody.... but it is pure coincidence
