  1. The last few weeks, I was asked several times how I use the air button of my (recently sold) Geuns Wakker Anglo concertina. As the position of the air-button and handstrap are almost identical on my Marcus, I just made a few photo's to show:

    1. a general view of my hand position:

    2. a detailed view of my thumb, showing how I use the air-button. As you can see, rather short thumbs should also be able to press the air button:

    3. a general picture to show that I have quite normal hands:

  2. The second video where the midi sounds like an organ/calliope was a bit less disconcerting.

Especially this second video made me very sad... I'd never expected to hear this Bavarian Lederhose Beer-drinking Music from something that looks as elegant as an English Concertina.

It's like a swan that starts oinking like a pig!! :(

  3. Drinking cofee while looking at your website can be quite a risk. While drinking my cofee I saw this picture:

    HeavyMetal.jpg

and your comment: "Cover with cheese, 10 minutes, Gasmark 5"... I almost drowned in 150 ml of coffee

Of course I gave it a try, resulting in this...

..I advise you Henrik to review the recipee... the result is rather disappointing :( :(

  4. Light is appearing at the end of the tunnel!

    /Henrik

Thanks for the update Henrik, it's looking great and very professional.

Looking forward to the next update and to see and hear the finished beauty :)

I've been quiet for a while - but no news means good news: here is the next update!

It's starting to look like something, it's airtight, and it can say "whooooooooosh...."

(I will start playing with sound when all the other stuff is finished (except, maybe, lacquer and final polish of the endplates).

Before someone asks - the snow on the "Concertina Matters" banner image means that we still have lots of snow here. Brrrrr!

For the benefit of dial-up users, the update is here

    /Henrik

Talk about usage - I have 150 Bytes left on my web space! This means that I will use your kind offer, Henk, about moving my sound files to your server.

    Henrik

What a progress! By looking at the pictures even I can get very excited.

Nevertheless you are welcome to send your sound-files!

  5. Mr. Flake is the author of a web site in German that Goggle refuses to translate, great pictures though. http://users.interstroom.nl/~veldhuis/-symphonetta/

I tried to email Leo Flake but the emails were returned. Does anyone know how to contact him?

This morning I spoke to Leo Flake on the telephone. He is busy with a new website and has a new e-mail address. As a result I have sent an e-mail to Leo with a copy to Jody.

  6. ...........................I remember, years ago, seeing a picture of the artist Matisse playing a concertina in his studio.I've no idea whether he ever used concertina images in his art or, more importantly ;) , what he played. Robin

Some searching in this C.Net forum, shows that Allison started a similar thread, titled "Concertinas In Art" about two years ago.

At that time there was a parallel thread "George Braque Playing His Concertina"

  7. I really like the second one. (Can't get it to 'quote', so it's not showing up here.) Is he the same one that did the whistle player in the car? That artist has got style. Is there a gallery online?

    Aldon,

    You mean this one??

    pic17.jpg

I saw a signature at the right side of the painting and did a Google search and found a gallery at:

    http://ireland.iol.ie/~solamar/main.htm

While seaeching I came accross another concertina-related picture:

  8. I purchased a Stagi W015-MS about 5 months ago and have been practicing. I've gotten to the point that the dog doesn't leave the room when I take out the concertina. This means that either I've improved or the dogs gone deaf.

Anyway, I've been frustrated with the graphic of the button layout that came with the concertina. It is about a 99th generation Xerox. So this week end armed with the Song Writer program and Photo Shop I created and checked (I think) and updated and easer to read version.

If anyone wants to use it feel free. If you find any errors let me know.

You've put a lot of work in this. To me it looks (almost) like a 30b C/G with a wheatstone lay-out as is shown on Juergen Suttners website at http://www.suttnerconcertinas.com/images/k...ut_wheat_31.pdf.

  9. I recently bought this etching by Gertrude Degenhard:

    KART001693t.jpg

    Gertrude has made more:

    KART000806t.jpg

    and this one:

    KART000790t.jpg

    and this one:

    KART001424t.jpg

and a painting I see every month when I am at the session in "Malden"

I'm sure in the past we (C.Netters) came across more pictures. Someone should make a concertina-in-arts link page to prevent us repeating this subject every 2-3 years.

  10. Chris & Anne,

Well done on completing 30 years together. Hope that the party goes with a swing, and I expect to see some postings after the events - how about a few photos?

    Regards,

    Peter.

Assuming that PeterT has the right information, I join him in congratulating you both with being 30 years together.

The next SSI there will be some extra Duvel to celebrate this!! ;) ;)

And who knows what happens in Alkmaar??

  11. I have a Hohner 20 button c/g anglo and presently looking at a 30 button g/d instrument. To prevent confusion and having to relearn the same tunes over again, I am hoping that a g/d instrument would have the same fingering patterns as the c/g, but just comes out in a different key. ie on the c/g when playing a DEG run I cross over to the c row to catch the E note. On the g/d instrument the E would most likely be in a different location causing all sorts of confusion.

I would greatly like some help from someone in the know. Thank you, Rock Garton

    Rock,

Welcome to this forum. To answer your question in an indirect way: the relation between the C and G row on your 20b Hohner will relatively the same for the G and D row on your 30b G/D. So the fingering patterns will be in fact the same, but you're playing in another key.

What new for you is of course the accidental row! Having this accidental row, I wonder why you did not go for a 30 b C/G instead of a 30 b G/D..??

  12. I had a very wise musician friend tell me, "When you're just starting out, don't even worry about note names. Just focus on, 'this note on this line is this button/action.' Note names will come later."

    He was quite right.

Thanks Rhomylly for this reaction. For some (mainly Dutch concertina beginners) I made this tiny web-space. Most of them have no clue about notation. Others might wonder.... a G can be played at different buttons.... but which one should I take??

For all those questions tablature might be a big help.... to come to a level where tablature is no longer needed!!

  13. I do not really remember where and from whom I learned this hornpipe. In the meantime I gave it the title "the Eiffel Hornpipe". The reason is that it popped up while I was on a very small camp-site in the Eiffel region in Germany at the borders of the Ruhr. At the other side of this small river there is a little village where every day at 07:00, 12:00 and 16:00 the churchbell chimes in a rhytm that perfectly fits this hornpipe.

So I very often played it together with the curchbell from the other side of the water. This year I will be back there again for a few days and I'm really looking forward to play the "Eiffel Hornpipe".

So back to the title of this topic: anyone knows the "real" title of the Eiffel Hornpipe??

  14. Why is this so addictive? A small voice in the back of my mind, has started to whisper "Wakker, Wakker, Wakker" BUT NO! I'll stay firm (at least for the time being).

    Charlotte,

To place things in perspective. I (happily) played a Hohner 20b C/G for more than 10 years. After that I upgraded 4 years ago to a Martcus Deluxe. And now...... I just got a mail from Wim Wakker announcing the serial number of my new concertina.... and that this new concertina will be ready in two months. So when I visit the SSI I will bring this new Wakker WA-1..... Another highlight of the SSI:.. Henrik will (I hope) bring his self-built English Concertina.

The most important: The next SSI will be a lot of fun!!

  15. Sounds like a long drive, from the Netherlands!

Did it several times before (driving to Dundee). Most of the disctance is done by boat (to Newcastle). After that it's a great trip along the East-shore going up to Edinburgh. Driving through Northumberland and passing places like Morpeth and Berwick.

It'll take you about 5-6 hours to drive from Newcastle to Dundee. From Dundee to Ardrossan to take the boat to Arran will take about 2 hours. So it's not such a long drive. :)

  16. Henk, what part of Netherlands are you in? My wife and I are planning to move back there this summer. We lived in Utrecht 2000-2001, but this time are considering Zaandam.

    Corbin,

I live close to Arnhem (about 60 km south-east of Utrecht). When possible, we should meet, play together or join a session  ?
