  1. "Lossy" means some data can be lost in the de/compression process. If this data cannot be recovered, well, you're missing information. This is important in audio, espcecially if you are sharing files. There are those who would argue you can't tell the difference between the content. The benefit to using a lossless format such as FLAC or SHN is that the information is lossless and compressed. Both FLAC and SHN are popular formats for the trading of live music performances. These formats are like a zipfile for audio. I looked for a good primer for you, Henk. Try http:/xmixahlx.com/audio/sc/introduction.html

Thanks for the information on "lossy" and the formats FLAC and SHN. I used your link and had a look at the site. I agree that for serious archiving and decompressing to WAV these formats are very attractive.

The scope of the project is (as far as I have in mind) to share recordings in order to learn from each other. For that aim MP3 looks for me as an acceptable format. Reality points out that it is the most used format on the internet and the only thing I can do, is collect links. I cannot influence the players that upload their sound-files somewhere on the internet :( .

  2. Thanks for your appreciation Stuart!

Henk's tabular song-by-song approach provides plenty of data, but means that if I archive any files or shift them around - something I do quite a lot with my own stuff as I never plan it well enough in advance  <_< - or simply decide that there are songs that I don't like any more, then that table of links quickly becomes obsolete. In contrast, I'm a lot less likely to take down my site completely - so a link to www.anarchyinthecotswolds.co.uk will stay current for a good while.

You have a point there, but.. I can use tools to detect your shuffling with files and to detect new stuff on the internet quite easily.

So I propose that I will give it a try and build up some experience with the tools that I have. After some time I will discovere if it is "managable"

Like your playing B.T.W. It opens new directions for me!

Thanks for your message. Brings back memories of my pre-concerina life when we spent two summer-holidays in Ballyvaughan, about twenty years ago!

You really very well described the atmosphere!

Needless to say that my pre-concertina life ended in county Clare and that I came back two years ago to upgrade from my old Hohner 20b to a lovely 30b Marcus.

    Thanks again :)

  4. Henk, What a cute little box!  Is it yours?  Where would I find one?  Too bad it's not an Anglo, but I'll try to be flexible.

I notice that it says Saltarelle on the end  which spells $$$$$$$$$$$, but it might would be worth looking into.

    Lisa

No it's not mine :( . The page on which I found the photo, says that it's a STAGI. It is a page that is a part of the Scandinavian Squeeze In 2003 website.

Added later: Look at this page almost at the bottom: the prize is reasonable (but also for a 5 year old kid?).

  5. ldp,

Thanks for your contribution. I have some reactions/comments:

At the risk of making the venture too easy, I offer the following observation. Other communities such as this often have "Contribute a Link" pages. There is a form which individual members fill out with the site name, URL and a succinct description.

You are right that this makes the venture easier, but the Webmaster Paul & Ken have to organize (or program) a script in order to store the data in a database. On top of that an effort is required to keep the database up-to-date. (URL's can change, soundfiles can be deleted by the owner, etc.)

It then becomes up to each contributor to give the best information. There is no burden on the webmaster or admin other than providing the script for the form.

And that may be the weak point.. Active searching on the www is then replaced by the willingness of the members to enter the data and a said already the webmasters have to control and maintain the entries.

Joe Blow's Website < --- with the link activated on the title.

Concertina.net member from Your Town, USA. Has several MP3 files of Blow playing Anglo C/G. Includes jigs, reels and a couple of Playford tunes without backing accompaniment. One tune features Sam Smith playing his Crane Duet.

I did a serious try to find the Joe Blow's stuff, but I can't locate it. Can you give more precise directions? :(

and why would MP3 be used? that is a lossy format.

Could not find the meaning of the word lossy (I'm Dutch  !), or do you mean lousy? Anyway I do not know what is wrong with the MP3 format. It is widely accepted and will stay for the coming years. MP3 players are introduced worldwide (and are a ww success), because of that.

As a result of searching the www, I found some additional material for your map.

Have a look at this listing!

Although there are some familiar names in it, this list might be usefull for you.

How did I get there? I saw that Jody Kruskal is the latest new member of CNet. As this name did ring a bell somewhere in my head, I did a search on Jody Kruskal with Google and found Jody and a lot of interesting stuff!

I hope you can use it Stephen and a warm welcome to Jody!

  7. At some point, not necessarily soon, it might be helpful if it could be designed so people could post their own urls.  That would ensure growth too.

    Kurt,

Your suggestion asks for a Database solution. This would also enable sorting the page according to the various criteria (concertina type, title, player, etc.) .

However this asks for an extra effort from Paul or Ken :( .

  8. For at least some of us, those are not stupid questions.  In these days when many computers are delivered with everything pre-installed and no instructions, ignorance can be hard to lose without a remedial tutor.

I fully agree with Jim and I support the suggestion of Kurt to have a page in CNet on this subject.

I just did a quick Google search for anything containing all of ".mp3", ".wav", "converter", and "shareware".  It found more than 300 thouand hits.

It's not that bad Jim. I found only 571!

Up till now there were much more (and very usefull) reactions than I expected.

    Thanks all!

  9. What you have is more than conceptual -- it works!  It appears to me that growing the page length is high among the next steps.

    A couple of comments -- .......

    Kurt,

I did some work and added extra info (as you asked for). Have a look at the upgraded page.

At this moment I am hesitating to expand the collection. I am waiting for more comments before I really start building up the page.

I agree with Stephen Mills that some guidelines are needed about recording.

I will come back to this later, but at the moment I have to hurry... other matters ask for attention! :(

    Henk

  10. I think this is a very worthy project.  I'm trying to think how it might work.  Would this be on the concertina.net site -- the links and information,- not the sound files?

    Kurt,

With this link I show a concept page. Do'nt look at the contents or lay-out, but at the idea. This page is now at my site, but could be transfered easily to the Concertina.net site.

I like your suggestions about the data to be shown for each entry. Maybe some more suggestions will be welcome!

Another thing is.. which players/tunes shall we include? Only members of C.Net? Only full tunes (no fragments)?

BTW: I like your playing :)

    Henk

  11. As soon as these posts started I thought a list of links to people's own recordings would be great.....

....A subforum here that is very specific to recordings of people playing concertina might be useful and easier, subject to human nature (tendency to drift to other topics etc.).  Maybe someone would be willing to moderate that subforum, which means we set it up to give you some privileges with the software to rearrange posts, etc.

Give us your thoughts; we're listening (if distracted).

    Ken,

I guess you, Alan, Morgana and I are thinking along the same line (as far as this subject concerns). When the forum Tunes/Songs started, I had the idea that I should be filled with contributions of us all. What I had in mind was to host the tune (MP3) somewhere on the free homepage that you "automatically" get from your Internet Provider and send a link to the forum.

Up till now a few concerina-players have uploaded their links in this Tunes/Songs forum:

    Alan Day

    Stuart Estell

    Morgana

    me

Outside this forum there maybe some more and on the internet there are much more. I was already starting a page to collect the links, showing:

    - player

    - concertina

    - tune

    - remarks

I can finish that page and send it to you (?)

    Henk

  12. E.g., there's an orange dot in Switzerland.  I can only think of one concertina player in Switzerland, and (1) his C.net member info doesn't say he's from there, but (2) as far as I know, the only concertina he plays is the English.  So who's this other one?

    Jim

I did some research and found: Reto Werdenberg with quite a collection as you can see in his only message up till now.

I completely agree with you that we also should be able to search the member by intersting criteria like location.

    cheers

  13. I waited a few days to beg Frank to tell me how to open my spiffy new tina case. I almost had it figured out. Thank goodness the tina wasn't in it or I would have chewed it open.

Did'nt you have a squirrel for that??

  14. I have a Jeffries G/D. Every time I pick it up it makes me feel better. The thing is a joy germ. It seems to defy the theory of relativity; it is bigger than the box it lives in. No matter the price, it is cheaper than chocolate bars, new cars or therapy sessions, boats, travel, fast women, name your own money drain...

    Chris,

This is a very nice statement! It's the nicest I heard about the impact that a concertina can have on people.

At the same time it makes me wonder how different this world could have been when...

God created Adam and.... a concertina :) !

  15. Henk - you're right, it was in a previous thread - my apologies :)

No prolem at all Morgana. The more attention for this event, the better. This year's Fleadh Nua is very close, but maybe next year it could be an opportunity for those who love the Irish nusic to meet and have a party!!

I have some friends living in Ennis so I could organise "something".

  16. I came across the site the other day and thought you might be interested. It's a recording of the Aos Óg Concert, Friday 24 April 2002, that was held at the Glór Irish Music Centre in Ennis.

    Hi Morgana.

    Sounds familiar to me:

BTW: you can listen to the fleadh nua concert of 2002 at http://fleadhnua.ennis.ie/virtual_aosog.htm

The second tune of the first part features nice concertina-playing.

For those who have the opportunity, this years fleadh nua will be at: Ennis County Clare - 24th to 31st May 2004.

It was in a previous thread

I'm glad you like it! I was once there long ago and it was the moment I fell in love with the concertina. You should go there once.

This morning very early (4:00) I was staring at the Albert Park in Melbourne :o ! It was the start of the F1 season and while looking at the Schumacher's, Alonzo's and whatever you have, I studied "Over the moor to Maggie". At the end of the race I managed to play the tune within the lap-time of Schummie (1 min. 22 sec.), so I more or less won this first Grand Prix  !

  17. My Tina has a name: Mary (in Dutch: Marie) which is the name of my mother. After she died in 1997 she left some money, which I estimated enough to fullfill a wish that I had for a long time: to upgrade from my Hohner 20b GC to a better concertina. It took me 5 years to make a choice (which is normal for me) and buy my present Marcus 30b GC.

BTW: this does not mean that I do not have special names for my wife, children, my car or (even) my bike!

  18. Rhomylly,

No matter what Paul or Ken can do for you, my answer is YES!! My Tina has a name: Mary (in Dutch: Marie) which is the name of my mother. After she died in 1997 she left some money, which I estimated enough to fullfill a wish that I had for a long time: to upgrade from my Hohner 20b GC to a better concertina.
