  1. Thanks Daniel...I figured it was something like that. So the Italians anglos are probably like the German? I think the Stagi has the G/D button. cheers, dave
  2. I'm waiting for my 1st concertina to arrive, but in the meantime I was looking at some layout charts for the 20 btn anglo and noticed a confusing discrepancy. I THOUGHT the left hand G row goes: Push-G, D, G, B, D Draw-D, F#, A, C E but then I saw a chart in which the first button on that row is different: push-B, D, G, B, D draw-A, F#, A, C, E so is the first button G/D or B/A? Maybe that's a different system? Thanks for any help! Dave
  3. I'd like to contact Chris Milligan, who posted a short peice about South African music on this site (http://www.concertina.net/southafrica.html). Chris, if you're out there, please contact me! Or if anyone knows him, please pass along my email: Dave AT spectacularopticals DOT com thanks! Dave Murray
  4. Hi All, I'm having the hardest time finding a new OR used 20 button anglo that has octave tuned double reeds! There's the cheap chinese instruments for about $100 on ebay, but I've been told to stay away from those. The only new model with this set up is the Stagi C2, but they're proving to be hard to find. Anyone have an old Bastari they want to get rid of?????? cheers, Dave
  5. Hi again Daniel, thanks for passing thaty along..I just called Doug Creighton at the Button Box and he confirmed that the C2 is double reeds in an octave tuning. FYI, he says the Stagi's generally need to be re-tuned when they arrive at his shop, the factory is not very careful. Anyhow, I'm going ahead with that instrument and Doug is going to do the work to convert to squashbox...I'll let y'all know when it's done! Dave (hope you're enjoying thhe greek cd!)
  6. Hi Daniel, I'm looking for octave tuned, which is how they describe it on the Button Box website. Of course, it's $150 cheaper at Jim Laabs music, but they said it's unison! so I'm a bit confused....
  7. hmm, it played automatically when I logged on. I can convert to mp3 and post later... dave You have to be a member of something and log on to listen to the recording. Can you copy and post recording for the rest of us? I'm not sure I want to be a member of everything.
  8. Here's a link to a field recording made by David Rycroft: http://sounds.bl.uk/View.aspx?item=025M-C0...13XX-0200V0.xml I'm not positive that the concertina used here is the exact tuning I listed, but this is the general effect. (note-the recording seems to be slowed down, imagine it faster!) Dave
  9. thanks, I've been meaning to get over there and check out his shop. The squashbox tuning according to Harry Scurfield (for Eb/Bb): LEFT Push-Eb Bb Eb G Bb Pull-Bb D F Ab C RIGHT Push-D F Ab C D Pull-Eb G Bb D G LEFT Push-F A C Eb G Push-Bb F Bb D F RIGHT Push- Bb D F Bb D Push- A C Eb G A Two of the reed blocks are reversed and one note re-tuned. (does that make sense?) thanks, Dave
  10. thanks kerry, that one is only a single reed model. I actually found a place that sells the Stagi C2, which is just what I'm looking for...suprisingly, hardly any concertina shops sell this model...I guess the 20 btn, double reed isn't too popular these days! dave
  11. Hi there, Can anyone recommend someone in the San Francisco area of California who could do some work re-tuning my anglo to the south african tuning? I know what the tuning needs to be, I just need someone with the expertise to do it.... thanks! Dave
  12. Hi All, I'd like to buy a Stagi or Bastari 20 button Anglo Double Reed Octave tuned concertina. If anyone has one to sell or knows a dealer that offers these, new or used, please let me know! I'm new to concertina but play other accordions and I'd like to convert one of these to the south african squashbox tuning.... thanks! Dave
  13. I think you're right, he responded to my email by asking what a squashbox is....the search goes on.... thanks, Dave
  14. Sorry I keep replying to myself...but is it possible to get a converted concertina to play this squashbox style? Or is it difficult to make the conversion? What would be the best type of Concertina to approximate their sound? I've read it's a 20 btn Anglo, but is there a specific model or maker that is commonly used? thanks! Dave
