  1. I will put up two posts one for yes and one for no. No need to,indeed don't)answer, just open the relevant post and that will, courtesy of the wonders of Schwarzenomics give us a viewed count which will give a snapshot of those who can and those who can't.

    Done smile.gif

hearing the tune followed by looking at the dots/listening to the midi for me biggrin.gif

although I can read music (slowly), sight reading has never been a strong point so hearing the tune is the best way to fix it in my memory but I don't always recall it exactly as heard (hearing it first in G but getting home and remembering it in D or A can be a bit of a so and so for sessionsrolleyes.gif) the dots, sound file keep me right smile.gif

anyone else find that some tunes are retained after one 'listen' yet others never 'stick' no matter how often you hear them?

  2. I just have to post this one, it's a cracking little jig plumbed from the depths of an ancient manuscript and destined to take the session scene by storm once a few players pick it up. Remember where you saw it first!

biggrin.gif nice one, it's been added to the 'to learn after Christmas' pile 16.gif

  3. Damn. Does this mean I have to transcribe it before I go to bed ? It's been a long day!

Here it is then. "By Request". Not a tune I would have added to this thread I have to say, titles can be a little misleading. It's quirky but not in a good way.

Thankyou smiley-happy065.gif I didn't expect you to take the trouble to do it so quickly, it's a charming tune biggrin.gif

  4.

Right then, I just had to post this one because of the name! It's also an unusual tune and will give sight readers a bit of a work out ...

    Lady Pentweazles Maggot

biggrin.gif ..... I'll have to learn it just to see the look on peoples faces when they hear what it's called laugh.gif

  5. Sometimes you can find good secondhand leather belts of the right thickness in charity shops biggrin.gif might be cheaper than buying small quantities of new leather and if you're lucky and it's a wide belt you can cut several straps from it smile.gif

I've not seen a concertina with rope hand straps before, they've usually had leather ones. Does the rope chafe the back of your hands?

  6. I'm also not a facebook member. I simply don't trust it.

I don't like its closed model, especially as it is a one way closed model.

    Geoff

hear hear smile.gif I'm not a facebook member either but I did get round to joining the ICA biggrin.gif

what really put me off facebook was the way it took them months to shut/suspend my late husband's account despite having the meaning of deceased explained to them in detail several times. rolleyes.gif

his being dead is no barrier to getting e-mails from them saying how much fuller his 'life' would be if he re-activated his account blink.gif smiley-angelic005.gif

  7. I would have ABC'd the tune but my goodness that's quite complex!

I've just copied the 'middle' treble melody line out longhand (no printer ) so that's cut down the mass of dots to a more manageable looking score biggrin.gif Now to have a go at playing it biggrin.gif

  8.

Come to think of it I don't recall any rapper sides in the UK being particularly up tempo. Brisk at times perhaps, sharp and energetic even, but always leaving enough room in the dance (and the music) to let it breathe and flow.

Here's a link to Sallyport Sword at Whitby Folk Week A 1st class side and a brilliant musician on the melodeon, fast without losing the lift and life of the tunes, playing non-stop for over 12 minutes, most of it solo smile.gif

  9. laugh.gif

I'll play it as they leap biggrin.gif

...... and it's only the outside that gets older .... the inside stays 20 laugh.gif

    Cheers Ann

Really? I'm only 18 myself but 18 was a good year for me. I would have ABC'd the tune but my goodness that's quite complex!

It's not that bad ..... especially after Lamma Bada Yatathanna laugh.gif

  10. .....

    You're a genius smileyvault-arms.gif

    Hi Anlej

When I was young, I used to think so. As I got older reality set in. :(

You could try this for an encore:

I'll play it as they leap biggrin.gif

Thanks for the link to the Finnish tunes, I already know Sarkynyt Onni but there are lots on there to learn biggrin.gif Ikaalisten Rantatie's just been downloaded

...... and it's only the outside that gets older .... the inside stays 20 laugh.gif

    Cheers Ann

  11. I don't have Gloomy Sunday, but you might try pairing it with Gloomy night: the words seem to fit the same category.

    - John Wild

Filled with misery ....... just perfect. thankyou biggrin.gif

    Here's a link to

on You tube for anyone who'd like to hear the tune smile.gif
  12. Does anyone have the sheet nusic or abc for the 1933 song Gloomy Sunday please?

Sometimes sessions I go to are dominated by singers of the 'Dirge-athon' variety, anything not stuffed to the gills with abject misery, death, disease etc. causes raised eyebrows rolleyes.gif

I've given up trying to lighten the mood with the odd cheerfull tune (I'm terminally optimistic) and fancy trying Sarkynyt Onni (Shattered Happiness) followed shortly after by Gloomy Sunday ....... then sitting back and seeing how many people are driven to throw themselves through the windows (though that could just be my playingbiggrin.gif)

  13. No problem, I just hope it's traditional and not under copyright!

    :D

It's very old, a traditional tune from the time when the Moors ruled Spain so it should be alright biggrin.gif

    Here's a translation of the verse smile.gif

    When the gossamer nymph appears,

    My beloved's beauty drives me to distraction;

    Surrender

    Surrender

When I am enraptured by a glimpse,

    My beloved's beauty is a tender branch caught by the breeze;

    Surrender

    Surrender

    Oh my destiny, my perplexity,

No one can comfort me in my misery,

In my lamenting and suffering for love,

    But for the one in the beautiful mirage;

My beloved's beauty drives me to distraction,

    Surrender

    Surrender

  14. This tune's a cracker for keeping the fingers busy on a wet weekend. It was played by Jack Campin in the Euro sessions at this years Whitby Folk Festival biggrin.gif

it's Andalusian Arabic in 10/8 and sounds well on the concertina

I've got a year to get it up to speed ready for the next Euro sessions laugh.gifLamma Bada Yatathanna.pdf

Here's a youtube link to Lamma Bada Yatathanna sung by Fayrouz (the only way I can get the timing right is to listen to the tune biggrin.gif )

  15. two spring breaks in one month? .....

anyways. that does not sound right, maybe the spring is ill fit. do you have a close up picture of the action pan?

It doesn't sound right at all sad.gif

In nearly 30 years I've only had 1 spring go on me, and that was in an old concertina.

The Dipper has been played almost daily for 19 years, in ceilidh bands, Morris sides, sessions and 'just for the fun of it', so it's had a fair workout in that time with no spring problems.

Perhaps there's a problem with the quality or gauge of steel used for the springs in your Connor ?

Ask John Connor to have a look as he'll know best smile.gif
