  1. May I mention that I sold my C. Jeffries Bb/F 45 key (small sized, like a 39 key)) anglo to Barleycorn a few months back.  It is a lovely player with no issues at the time of selling and it still seems to be on their website.

I sold it as part of an instrument downsizing, I have cancer and felt I'd like to pass on some of my instruments for appreciative players.  It is genuinely a 'cracker' - believe me, I'm a fussy old bloke! I have no connection with the seller, other than having bought from him in the past on several occasions and been very satisfied with every aspect of his service over many years.

Just thought I'd mention, this if you haven't already come across it.

  2. Just a quick plug for a new CD of English style tunes.  'Backwards Telescope' from Colin (Penny for the Ploughboy) and Karen Cater, ably assisted by Anahata, Mary Humphries, Chris Partington and Danny Gallagher.  Almost all self penned by Colin, who's decades of melodeon and anglo playing give these tracks a real 'back to the music we love' feel.  As it says on the sleeve - ' Contemporary English Music Inspired by Times Past'. 15 tracks, 25 tunes + a song from Karen, played mainly on G/D anglos + melodeons, 5 string banjo, fiddle and cello. From Hedingham Fair website - my copy was £13.95 incl postage - good production values and tune info. .  Reminded me of those bands in the 70's and 80's, who put the English repertoire back on the map. I'm just a happy customer, no connection.

  3. This is a reluctant, but necessary sale through age and some illness.

It has been suggested by a previous owner and cnet luminary, that this instrument was probably one of the last sold by the late Lancashire concertina player Fred Kilroy.  In fairness, Fred had many concertinas, but apparently a previous owner called it 'Kilroy' for that reason and said owner was not in the habit of naming his instruments!

However, I bought it through Theo Gibb in 2013, who I believe acquired it from Jim Lucas of this parish. It had previously been thoroughly fettled and remains a superb instrument, which I've mainly played at home (pet free / smoke free) or on odd occasions at folk clubs for song accompaniment.

This concertina is in fine order, plays very quickly and has a strong and clear 'voice' with a good dynamic range (well it is a Jeffries, after all!) suiting it to song or tune playing.  I haven't felt the need to have any tuning/ pad / or valve work done, as there haven't been any issues in use, but I changed 2 bone buttons - the drone and air - for metal ones to complete the set. I'm not sure why they had been different, perhaps it was to do with touch.   I usually play / sing whilst standing and the weight has been no trouble, but it is heavier, of course, than a 30 key C/G and although a G/D, it is very responsive and not at all ponderous to play.

It comes with a modern hard-case.

I'm aware that the anglo instruments with a larger number of buttons tend to be less popular than 30 / 39 key ones, but this one only has an extra 6 buttons over a 39 and is rather rarer as a Jeffries G/D, so given my situation, I've priced it to sell at £4650 + delivery. Only available to UK buyers for now, as I really don't fancy navigating international sales trivia!

  4. For sale my 45 key C.Jeffries Bb/F anglo concertina. It is a bit unusual in being a 45 key model that is only 6 inches across the flats and as such is quite a bit lighter than some of the other 45+ instruments I've seen (and had). It tips the scales at 1.5kg, around half a kilo lighter than the bigger 45 key models, which makes it easier to handle and to my mind, very responsive.  It is a plain, flat metal ended instrument in very good condition with replacement 7 fold bellows and unadorned handstraps.  It is marked 'C. Jeffries maker 'between the left-hand buttons and 'C. Jeffries maker' on the cartouche on the right-hand end. It also has this stamped very finely on the woodwork adjacent to the brass gnurled screw securing the left-hand handstrap.

It's in fine playing condition with a lovely strong, rich tone, which Jeffries reeds and Bb tuning give and it is in modern concert pitch with good compression and no leaks or playing problems.

It comes with a modern hardcase or a fine Jeffries hexagonal leather case with hinge, handle and clasp all working and intact - your choice.

    Price £ 4500 + delivery & insurance (est £30)

No international enquiries please, UK buyer only. Instrument in Devon UK

  5. For sale - Leather Wheatstone labelled english concertina case, would suit small instrument.  External size: 20cm x 19cm x 18cm.  Perhaps less usually, this case is externally excellent, having its original strap with buckles in place and firmly attached, working catch and hasp firmly attached (although no key to actually lock the lid!) and with good leather, good hingeing and stitching all round.  Inside it's a different story!  The lid is still lined and has its Wheatstone label, but the lower body is missing internal blocks and has very poor brown suede-type lining which is missing in parts.  Price: £25 for UK only sale + nominal postage of £5 or collection from North Devon.

So if you are handy at internal refurbishment, this is an extremely good and original case to work on at a sensible price for a genuine leather concertina case - they sell for a lot more in far less good structural condition.  Pics available via email.  I bought it hoping it would fit a small anglo - it doesn't!
