  1. As it happens, Banish Misfortune is the tune that would pop into my head, but I couldn't remember what it was called! Thanks for that.
  2. great thanks gents! anyone else?
  3. Hi all, I hope this is the appropriate place to ask this-seemed right to me! I'm a complete beginner (4 days and counting!)at the anglo 30 button G/C and I also happen to be a bit obsessed with the tune Garrett Barry's, the version which can be found HERE. I wouldn't mind having your opinions as to tunes that would fit nicely with this one in a set. I think it'd be a good goal, and great practise, for me to attempt to play a set like that through, eventually at speed. along with my other practising, of course! Thanks a bunch! Mark
  4. I'm trying a book or two. I can read music albeit slowly, but part of my goal is to learn to sightread more quickly. It'll come slowly but surely. That said I DO have a tune or two in my head that i cannot resist having a go at while i practice. It's like a language, in my mind-you have to try speaking it properly every now and again. Also I'll do recordings once in a while for perspective. I'll look up Bobby Shafto thanks!
  5. Yes a really great idea. I love hornpipes! If you're out there Concertinette, thanks!
  6. heyall, I was browsing some concertina vids on the Tube of You, and ran across a number of splendid hornpipes by a user named Concertinette. Is there a chance the self same person is here on this forum, or has been? She's pretty damn good, though i may not be the best judge. she plays a Dipper 34-button "County Clare" model anglo with burl maple ends, according to her comments under her first upload. 7. Worry not--I won't do this every day, but i wanted to say that today's 30 minutes became an hour. and i learned bunches. still only playing "London Bridge" and the like, but hey, it's only day 2! see you all around.
  8. Hey thanks alot everyone! Michael double thanks for the resources--the more the merrier. Anglo-irishman John, totally agree about the state-of-mind thing. "1/2 hour" a day it shall be--no days off, individual session duration flexible. you're all awesome, thanks! Mark
  9. hi, Mark here. just wanted to say hello. Just rented a G/C anglo 30 button (Concertina Connection's "Rochelle" model)to see if i can do anything with the thing. i've never held, much less played a concertina before so we'll see how this goes. i have Mick Bramich's Irish Concertina tutor, plus the one that comes with the instrument. specifically interested in joining the sessions around here as more than just a bodhrán player. by the way--how do you all practice? especially beginners...interested to hear what works for you, keeps you motivated. i thought i'd just go half hour-45 min daily, taking days off if i need to. anyway, hello and hope to be telling you how good i'm getting soon!
  10. hey i'm new here and plan to introduce myself, but i saw this and had to chime in. i just got a rental concertina today, first time ever holding or making noise with one. one of our cats who is quarantined upstairs started meowling pretty gustily when i started playing. maybe i'm that bad, maybe he's that good, i dunno. cute little bugger anyway.
