  1. Yesterday I went to see Emily Portman in London. Her two female band partners both played violin and one mainly harp too. They all three sang beautifully. The great surprise for me was Miss Portman's accompanying herself on a nice Lachenal English concertina on many of the songs. If you get a chance to see her, don't let it pass because she writes and performs great songs and is a rising star in my mind.

  2. Thanks for clearing that up Mark and, assuming that calling a New Yorker Texan is akin to calling someone from Yorkshire a Londoner, my apologies to you.

However, I can't resist telling you of my trip across America when I had a bit of an altercation with an American woman on the plane, I can't recall what it was over. At one point she said, 'You are so rude you must be a New Yorker,' and that made my friends (who were from Arizona) laugh like drains.

  3. Most amusing. Was that a somewhat strange pronunciation of 'recipe' I heard; or is it Canadian, or humour? Confused of the UK....

PS I just realised from his profile that Mr Gilston is a Texan, which is a part of that land I know quite well, having quite a few friends there.

  4. O, if only such arrangements made more sense to me than tadpoles hanging on a washing line.

Well this is precisely why it is worth putting the effort into learning. How would you get tadpoles to hang on a washing line anyway? I suppose you could impale them with pins.

I barely have the spare time to play and not enough for what for me would be a considerable task (I know because I've tried in vain before).

  5. Brian is performing at The Islington Folk Club on thursday 5th November, starting at 8.00pm. The Islington Folk Club is situated in the upstairs room of The Horseshoe pub, Clerkenwell Close, London EC4. The evening is being combined with a special tribute to my late partner Rosie, who was well-known for doing floors spots there, prior to her move up to Newcastle. Copies of her posthumous tribute CD, The Bold Dragoon, will also be on sale on the night.

Is there any other way of obtaining the CD Chris; for anyone unable to make this event?

  6. Regarding modern makers. It seems to me that, although they must make a living and have every to do so, they are also engaging in what we could call a labour of love, and such people will be worthy by virtue of that. I am certainly glad that they continue this old craft because we need instruments to be available to keep up this great hobby or pursuit of ours.

I had to make some serious cutbacks to afford my instrument and I don't regret any of them. Fortunately my wife liked the idea of a mellow concertina-playing Ian more than whatever else the money could have been used for.

  7. I found an old recording of mine experimenting with this tune.

    Just finished it.

    It is in French Style

For now I have called it Gizelle Waltz (it could do with being slower for dancing)

    See what you think

    Al

A great tune and well up to your usual standard. Most enjoyable thanks.
