apologies for the slight thread drift but does anyone have an English translation of the Finnish lyrics for Georg Malmsten's song 'Sarkynyt Onni'? It's a lovely sad melody but when people ask me what I'm playing all I can tell them is that it's known as 'Broken Fortune' (or Shattered Happiness).
Thanks Ann
Hi Ann
Have you looked at a partial translation from Google Translate? Move the mouse over the English, and click for some alternate words.
or this page under "Broken Fortune"
It's a start

Hi Shas
Yes, Alan has a really nice tutor. He's a member here, and plays a mean concertina, one of my favorites. On another helpful site, from another member, there is a good picture showing where those 20 buttons fit into a larger concertina. So your learning won't be lost "WHEN" the time comes to upgrade.

Amazing - how do you find this stuff (I mean the Swedish site)?!
/Henrik
Hi Henrik
Just too much time with a misspent youth in a library looking up "stuff". We couldn't afford to do much, and it was free. I just consider the internet as a big library, only easier. And a long time curiosity about unanswered questions. It really didn't take much time to find an answer, and in most cases it's how I ask the question.
Thanks

Jim Lucas wrote on the topic of "Concertina Orienteering" several years ago. Unfortunately I do not know how to post a link to it. I will find it again with the search function and bump it up to the present time.
Hi Mary B
To the right of the name of the member posting in the forum is a number. Click on it and a small window opens with the address of the post suitable for copy/paste into a reply. The results looks like this:

From memory, I'm pretty sure there is one, and English that never makes it out of the box, in The Return of Sherlock Holmes: The Priory School. I may be wrong about the episode, but it's well worth watching all the Jeremy Brett Sherlocks in any case!

is a bandondeon a kind of concertina? or a different kind of instrement which kind is it most like(anglo, english, duet). how much dose it cost do any of you play one and is hard (I'm not planing to buy one in the near future just curius).
Hi Ido
I would think it closer to an Anglo style, used to play tango music in South America. Here's a website from a maker, who is also a member on this forum. http://www.bandoneon-maker.com/
If you've the time, there was a movie made a few years ago with lots of bandoneon music, and some history.

Hey Leo, thanks once again, that lovely video of Claire & Charlie, led me to yet another great video of Cormac Begley playing some really mucky music in the Church, on a lovely growly Concertina.
Cheers
Dick
Hey Dick
Yeah, that's a nice find. It was posted a little too late for my last Friday update. From their main site, their schedule runs through September, so hopefully there will be more. http://tunesinthechurch.com/
I like the acoustics of the buildings they use too.

P.S. I'm also worried about the baggage retrieval system they got at Heathrow, but that's a different story...Yes, indeed!
After the experiences of both myself and various friends, I simply refuse to take any flight that begins or ends or -- most especially -- requires a transfer at Heathrow. Said experiences have included baggage lost, baggage sent to the wrong destination, and baggage seriously damaged. Too many such experiences for me to be willing to take any more chances with their baggage handling "system".
Hi Ruediger
I couldn't agree with Jim more. Carry it on. DON'T CHECK IT AS BAGGAGE. It's not worth the worry. It doesn't matter the cost, it's irreplaceable. If European convention has gone the way the US has, it also has the added bonus of not costing extra for your trip.
Thanks

Is it me, or does the Bootle concertina band consist of a nutter on bass drum, several percussionists (including a diminutive cymbal player) and one concertina?
Chris
Hi Chris
Every couple of months they show up on YouTube, with the same type video. I think the person taking the videos is a drummer or maybe a family member is up front. The concertinas are at the rear. I think it's just the way the video is taken. Even their website has the same kind of bias.

I've never heard anyone try to play quick dance tunes -- jigs, reels, polkas -- on the saw. I won't say that it can't be done, though.
I think the problem is that it is almost impossible to detach the notes. So a reel or jig should sound like a continuous and indistinct glissando.
Oh, I don't know about that. I'm going back almost 40 years in memory. Those old guys could get going pretty good. It's speculation on my part how they did it, but I suspect it's something along the lines of bending and unbending, along with the thumb taps quickly and together and well practiced. They didn't use a hammer or anything else to strike it, nor was a bow used. Nobody could afford it. It sounded pretty good and the "notes" or "sounds" were pretty distinct. If I were to describe the sound, it would not be as sharp as something hard striking the metal, or as continuous as a bow moving across, but something more like a muted type sound and held as long as the saw was bent.
It looks like it's partially described in the PDF David mentioned, where it describes holding the saw in both hands.
I'm not advocating any particular technique, I'm just passing along an anecdotal experience.
Either way, it sound cool to try it.
Thanks

ABC
in Tunes /Songs
Posted · Edited by Leo
A disadvantage of attached documents in a post is eventually you reach a personal limit and have to eventually start deleting PDF and GIF files to make room for more. ABC text in a post has no such limitation and doesn't count toward that limit.
Also if someone likes the tune, it's easy to just write the notes on a napkin pretty quick.
I read music enough to learn and sight read very slowly, but am practically tone deaf and don't play by ear.
ABC's are just another tool, but the sheet music is the ultimate tab that works on any instrument.
Thanks
