  1. Hello, I've been far from my concertinas for a few months, but I'm back now and will be posting some concertinas, books, sheet music, etc. on eBay over the next couple weeks. Most of the ones I have left are pretty busted up, but there are a few good ones. More soon!

I've just listed a copy of Allan Atlas's hard-to-find The Wheatstone English Concertina in Victorian Englandhttps://www.ebay.com/itm/285088439237

  2. Hi everyone, this concertina didn't sell because i had to leave the country and so I took the listing down. I'm back in MA, and will sell it, but I can't simply re-post the deleted info on ebay, so I'm gathering info, digging up old photos, hoping to to avoid having to open it up again to photograph the reed pans. If anyone wants to make an offer (can be shipped to US locations or carried to Italy in May or London September feel free to direct message me.

    Has this been sold?

Yes, that one has been sold. I had to take down a couple I was selling because I moved to London and couldn't bring the concertinas with me, but I've still got the Lachenal Tenor, a couple very old Rock Chidleys, and a handful of others. I found a beautiful metal-ended Lachenal just before I left - I'll check to see whether I took pictures of it. I will back in Boston-area houses full of concertinas in March, and then back in London, so I'll put them up for sale at some point this spring or summer, and I may be able to bring a couple back to London in April if there is interest. Feel free to DM if you know you are interested in one or more of the ones I put up on ebay and then took down before leaving the country.

It has steel reeds in brass shoes.  Good.  looks all original with no replaced reed tongues and there was possibly some tuning done recently.

Could you give me the two dimensions (across the two different flats) please?  Or maybe a photo with a ruler across the action plate?

I have a 48B lachenal baritone that appears to be very similar with 190/199mm across the flats (2 measurements as it a slightly stretched instrument).  That's 7.5 / 7.84 in inches.

Has it been tuned to A=440 concert pitch?

Interesting instrument.  My gut feeling is still that it is some type of limited compass baritone.  You say it is an F instrument.  Does this mean that the normal C button position is an F (LH side, 2nd row over from thumb strap, bottom button)?

The action plates appear to be mahogony.  I wonder how this affects the tone?  Probably a bit more “snap” to the notes as compared to European sycamore or American rock maple.

Are the action plates flat?  Any serious warping?

    .

Sorry - I didn’t see this until now, and I’m not sure I’ll be back in time to photo and answer these questions before the auction closes but I’ll send your questions to my mom who is there with the concertina now and see if she can answer asap.

What are the two dimensions across the flats?  It looks like a baritone to me, maybe even lower.  Any chance of taking an end off and including a photo of a reed pan?  Interesting.  Has it been tuned to A440 or is it still in old pitch?  I would love to see the reeds.

It’s in F, and I’ve posted pics of the reed pan. Lmk if there’s any other info you’d like to see.

  6. I am selling a very old, rare, Rock Chidley concertina. The number is 2764.

2764 is included in the Wheatstone Ledger entry for May 28, 1852, I learned from the Horniman Museum website: http://www.horniman.info/WNCMARC/C1047/PAGES/C3P0630L.HTM. The Rock Chidleys, however, are supposed to be marked with an "x" in the ledger but I don't seen an "x" on the page.

    Any thoughts?

I haven't opened it up to take pictures of the inside yet.

  7. I'm selling Lachenal 199,032 in the original box on ebay. Listing here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/284559338654

Does anyone know what year that would make it?

It needs some repair -- when I opened it two of the side pieces fell - they're held in place by the top lid, but I think it would probably be good to glue them down as well. I didn't want to do it because I don't know if the glue would affect the sound, etc. Better to let an expert handle the repairs.

    LMK if you have questions.

  8. Yes, that's what I saw too - a 3, rather than 8. I wrote to the Concertina connection though to ask about the work they did and they said they had worked on a 50,228, so I went with that! It didn't sell with a minimum bid of 1950, which I thought was surprising, so I've listed it again with a minimum bid of 1650. I think it's worth more than 2500, but I'm not an expert.

I'm also selling two others - I'll post links here in a sec.
