  3. Spare Parts (just Bryan Creer and me on this occasion) are running our usual part-playing session for all concertina systems at the Tenterden Folk Festival, Kent, UK, on Sunday 4th. October (http://www.tenterdenfolkfestival.org.uk/). Our session is from 3.00 pm - 4.30 pm in the White Lion Saddlery. You'll find the three-part arrangement of the tunes we'll be using as Noteworthy Composer, PDF and MIDI files on the band website (http://www.sparepartsband.co.uk/SPTunes.php) thanks to Bryan. The MIDI files have normal and slow versions. Each tune is played five times. The tunes are Centenary March, Trip to the Bath and Lakes of Sligo. We're also running a general song and tunes session in the White Lion bar that lunchtime. I understand Brian Peters is running a melodeon workshop from 5.30 - 7.00 pm on the Saturday afternoon. Tootle pip, Valmai
  4. Yes - I was keeping the title short, but I hope it was clear from the body of the post that the workshop's in Sussex rather than Delaware. Does Lewes, Delaware have a lot of traditional music? Should we establish contact? Lewes in Sussex is soaked in the stuff. We're looking forward to Jeff's visit, and whisking him off to a party on the Friday evening. Valmai
  5. A fine singer of American traditional songs, Jeff (www.jeffwarner.com) accompanies himself on guitar, 5-string banjo & English concertina. He presents music from North Carolina to New England with warmth, humour & understated scholarship. He's also a great teacher with a deep understanding of the origins on the music & how to perform it for today's listeners. The advance music for his all-day workshop in Lewes, Sussex, UK on 19th. September is now ready to be sent out (four songs as mp3s, plus words). Jeff recommends bringing a recording device if you have one, and also a song to try out in the group. Jeff performs at the Lewes Saturday Folk Club in the evening. We still have places at the workshop and tickets for the evening performance. A booking form follows my signature. 7. I hope everyone who came to the sessions had as good a time as we did. This was our first time at Whitby and we thought it was terrific. We now have leg muscles like pit ponies and are bathed in a warm glow. At least, I think that's what it is. The tunes will stay on our website until the run-up to our next festival outing at Tenterden in October. Tootle pip, Valmai
  8. Dear Everyone, CONCERTINA PART-PLAYING at WHITBY FOLK WEEK , 22 - 28 August 2009 (UK) with SPARE PARTS CONCERTINA BAND http://www.whitbyfolk.co.uk/index.html Spare Parts (Bryan Creer, Suzanne Higgins and I) are running part-playing sessions for all concertina systems in the Conservative Club bar every morning from 10.00 - 11.20 from Sunday until Friday. We'll be taking two sets of the arranged tunes we've worked on to the final workshop concert at the end of the week. These are less complicated than formal band settings, but give people the chance to play together in harmony. Thanks to a lot of hard work by Bryan Creer, all the tunes are on the band website http://www.sparepartsband.co.uk/SPTunes.php as pdfs and MIDI files. The MIDIs are in two versions, one normal speed and one slow for practising. The whole selection is also there as a single Word document. On Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday we'll work on Pleasures of Salisbury and Gussondall Bay as a set; on Monday, Wednesday and Friday we'll do the same for Nameless and Miss Sackville's Fancy. To provide variety we'll also play The Silver Swan, Peaceful Western Wind, Whinshields Hornpipe and Centenary March, but we're not aiming to get those ready for performance. The other tunes (Man in the Moon, Lovesick Polly, Quasimodo's Polka and Nancy's Fancy) may get an outing if people want, but are really coming with us as extras. Do get in touch if you can't make them work or want any help. If you want to concentrate on tunes which will definitely come up during the week, stick to Pleasures of Salisbury/Gussondall Bay and Nameless/Miss Sackville's Fancy. Valmai

The Lewes Phoenix project is the brainchild of Ar¬temis Arts Ltd who are working with the community – from schoolchildren to elderly residents – to capture the stories and images of the former iron foundry, the site of which is at the centre of plans for a major town centre redevelopment. Volunteers and contributors are encouraged to get in touch and find out how they can take part. The railings of St Paul’s Cathedral and girders for the piers at Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings, many lamp posts in Sussex streets, along with oven doors and soot boxes for local homes were manufactured at the ironworks which for much of the 19th century was the largest employer in the town of Lewes. The ‘Lewes Phoenix ‘ project will be launched by Ar¬temis Arts during Artwave –its theme is ‘Lewes, Now & Then’. A collaboration with clubs , youth organisa¬tions, artists, dancers, musicians, writers and histo¬rians who will celebrate local creativity from 1832 to the present day. The Foundry was established in 1832 - a time when large numbers of local people were moving from the land to towns and cities. The theme of town and country, from the early nineteenth century to the present will be echoed in a series of events, held in the old foundry buildings .

  22. And I've just sent them as midis as well. The last two arrangements are under construction - one is Windshields Hornpipe, but I don't know what the other will be. Each member of the band contributes two tunes and surprises the others with them. If they haven't reached you, let me know. It may be that I'm not using the right email address, in which case let me know which one I should use. Valmai
  23. Peter, I've just sent you pdfs of four of the arrangements we plan to use: the tunes are Black Nag, Portsmouth, I'll Touzel Yer Kurchy (Jackson) and The Britches (adaptation of the Irish tune Britches Full Of Stitches). There will be another couple of tunes, but these should be something to start on. Let me know if they don't arrive or appear mangled when they reach you. We'll follow our usual policy of doing three tunes in each session, and they will be different in each session. All the best, Valmai
  24. We've got a few tickets left for his performance in the evening; anyone can use the booking form at the head of this thread to reserve them if you like. Send me a cheque and I'll hold tickets on the door as there isn't time to put them in the post. All the best, Valmai
