Congrats, Charlotte!
You are in for a really fun weekend, I can tell!
-
Man, I really wish I hadn't clicked on that link...
-
I learned that 'chain yanker' is for Chain Yanker Kennels in Dallas. Sounds like some big dogs to me!
Huh. Wonder what kind of dogs?

Stephen, we have all of Evening Shade. And I owe you a drink of your choice when we meet for fixing these so I can print them out.
The day is past and gone.
The evening shade appears.
Oh may we all remember well.
The night of death is near.
We lay our garments down
Upon our beds to rest.
Oh, death will soon disrobe us all
Of what we now possess.
I LOVE that song!!!!
-
that is really funny!

I'm on a PC, and .bmp files bring up my paintbrush program.
grrrrrr. computers. grrrrr.

Year-round. According to his signature on the post-shower (foggy) bathroom mirror, his name is Floyd. We have tried everything to get that signature off there, and nothing works.
He occasionally turns lights off for us, steals my spouse's bathtowel and puts it in the laundry room, mutters to himself in the middle of the night and rolls my daughter's toy cars at the cat.
I think he needs a new hobby.
( I wish I were making this all up, but I'm really not. My house is really haunted)

nope, all I get is my paintbrush program. If the shapenote songs are in the same key as in the red book, I'm covered.
I love the Evening Shade lyrics. They're so delightfully morbid
-
Yeah, I mentioned that on the buy/sell forum.
I haven't had that good a laugh in a looong time. I was tempted to get it. We have a resident ghost at our house, and I thought he might have fun playing it.
-
It's wayyy to expensive for my budget.
-
My guess is y'all don't worry too much about miking your instruments, no?
Dang those things are huge!
-
see, this is why I have an electric teakettle. It's a lot quieter!
I am finding busking to be a lot of fun. For me, it's a great way to practice in front of people without said people staring at me and making me nervous.
And the little bit of $$ I get make nice pocket money.
Although I doubt I'll ever dress up like Mrs. Claus again -- even if it DID get me more tips.

I have not had good experience fixing basic concertina problems.
Frank Edgley has had to repair two of his creations in the last 5 years. One of them was mine, although he is too much of a gentleman to say so.
I panic at even the idea of a basic pad adjustment fix.
I'm thinking about bidding (with a firm $$ limit) on those sick, cheap 'tinas on ebay for practice, so I am better prepared when my good Edgley needs a minor tweak. I'm also thinking about picking up David Leese's concertina first-aid kit.
I'm going to the SW Squeezein next month, where there is a repair workshop planned.
What do you all think?

For some reason I thought Wally Carroll would be older...
ETA: And I wonder if anyone has told Bob Tedrow that he looks a lot like Sam Waterson, on Law and Order.
-
Dan,
re: the shapenote hymns (Evening Shade is my all-time fave!).
Do you recall if there was a shapenote singing workshop last year? Should I bring my big red book?
Rhomylly
ETA: I can't get any sheet music to come up on my screen when I click on the shapenote links.
ETA again: my computer won't open the bmp midi files

Oh good lord, Dan, I would break my arms if I tried to play that thing!
I've been doing a little research myself on chemnitzers. Aside from the fact that one of my life goals is to at least try as many squeezeboxes as I can, my spouse, and now my daughter, are of German/Polish descent. I'm considering getting one at some point.
-
This is very exciting news!
Except now I'm actually going to have to choose between buying a Jack and trying English or buying a Rochelle as a back-up anglo.
Well, if that's my worst concertina-related problem in the coming year, I will be happy!
-
(...And that's another thing. I've also got to call a plumber. And, with what they cost, I just may be out singing on a corner somewhere with a big tin cup for some extra coins.... )
Well, be sure to dress up in fancy costume! I hear that attracts more tips.
-
You know, if it weren't such a cheapie junk model, I'd bid on it, solely for the amusement factor. My house is already haunted, I'm sure Floyd the Bathroom Ghost would love an instrument to play with...
-
That was my thought too.
Or maybe it's really REALLY leaky and there's a strong draft?
-

Be brave, buy Dave Elliotts book and do the job yourself. It is not rocket science . If you can play a Tina you should have the brain cells available to repair it. Make sure you have decent tools, it makes life easier.
Then I really must be a bleedin' eejit, because every repair attempt I have made ended in disaster -- and the 'tina being shipped off to expert hands.
-
I'm all a-flutter and touched at everyone's advice and support.
Last night I confirmed that I would, in fact, be allowed to audition with something other than the five basic string instruments. The organizer seemed quite enthusiastic, once I explained what a concertina is.
Meanwhile, I'm practicing as close to every day that I can manage.

Stephen, you should have called on your way through!!!
Actually, it was the Melrose Bombing Range. Since we haven't had measurable precipitation since early October, the whole upper corner of the county just went up in flames.

I should have remembered that.
