I don't know about other systems but my Jeffries duet is fantastic played in this way. No squeakers and a nice meaty low end. high end on left knee held down by the right arm resting at the elbow. It is very much possible and being done. That and having good equipment and design. But if all of the above conditions can be met the question is are you in a setting which allows you to put in more effort than say someone working at Wheatstone's in 1910 or something like that. I'm talking about quite objectively measurable things like response time, smoothness of action ect. Character of an instrument is a bit harder to define or replicate, as in "well you know I just prefer this 1969 crabb because it just has a certain something - you know"

Problem with new site Part 2

https://www.concertina.net/topic/30214-problem-with-new-site-part-2/?do=findComment&comment=252773

I managed to get the two images into the post yesterday, with a few extra 'enters' to lay it out properly, using my android phone, but the display is too small to edit easily. My wife has just gone shopping, so I've further edited on my laptop (Win11, Firefox) to remove the two images below the 'Uploading Attachment' box, but couldn't see a way of removing that. Admin please feel free to see if you can remove it. My advice to any Windoze 7 users is therefore to use firefox, but not to try to upload images. It may be possible to link images from an external source somehow, which needs further investigation, but I seem to remember that this needed an https location for the images. I had already started a cursory hunt for information on 'E.C. Henderson Maker' before the auction had concluded but had turned up nothing so I'm thrilled with the info you have dug up here. Nice research skills. With the knowledge that he was Glebe based I did manage to find some listings on a family tree site describing an Edwin Chapman Henderson 1869-1944, five children listed as being born in Glebe, died in the RPA in Newtown, a short walk up the hill from Glebe. A likely contender. Can't wait to get my hands on it. As you are interested, when I do, I will be sure to post all the details here. His full name seems to have been Edwin C. Henderson, he appears first in the 1898 edition, but but there seems to be a printing error, as he is listed as "E.E. Henderson". They lists him at the following addresses... 73 Glebe Road, Glebe "Henderson E.E., musical instrument repairer" (1898, 1899 editions of the directory) "Henderson E.C., musical instrument repairer" (1900, 1903, 1904, 1906, 1907 editions). 167 St John's Road, Glebe "Henderson Edwin C.", without indication of his profession (1908 edition). 80 Derwent Street, Glebe "Henderson E.C." (1909 edition) "Henderson Edwin C." (1910, 1918, 1919, 1924, 1927, 1928 editions) "Henderson Edwin C., piano tuner" (1913, 1914 and 1917 editions). So his most active period in the music business was from 1898 to 1907. He is listed in the "Trades and Professions" section of the Directory under "Music sellers and musical instrument warehouses". In the times when he was listed as "Piano tuner", he also appears as such in the trades section of the book (1913-1917). The 1929 Directory does not list 80 Derwent St as an address, i.e. maybe the house was demolished? From that year onwards, there is no E.C. Henderson listed in Glebe.

One arm ,right hand player ?

https://www.concertina.net/topic/30209-one-arm-right-hand-player/?do=findComment&comment=252765

This guy has all the above beat. There's sometime the rule in on screen layout [I was advised] to favour mobile layout on setting up options, online, over desktop - however, I feel that the bigger screen is certainly an improvement. It was becomng quite an obsessive little tune, that I could repeat in my own human inner ear, and kept hearing it; so I just had to use it in a musical idea, and develop it further. So that's how this piece began; the simple motif repeats a few times, and also in the higher octave up [ more like the blackbird spoke it.] I am sure it's showing off to the other bird's now, everytime I hear it in my garden.

E.C. Henderson, concertina maker, Sydney

https://www.concertina.net/topic/30218-ec-henderson-concertina-maker-sydney/?do=findComment&comment=252757

Some of you might have followed this concertina auction on Australian eBay... https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/267667459074 The seller was a Salvation Army store in Sydney. It was for the following instrument, which sold for AUD449. I assume the purchaser is in Australia, as the item was only listed for shipping within Australia. 32-Key anglo concertina Maker: E.C. Henderson. Metal ends, bushed metal buttons. 7-fold bellows with Lachenal-type bellow papers, gold tooling on the frames. The bellows seem to have had a rebind, as the leather along the edges looks quite new. The only description on condition in the listing was: "Sound comes out, seems to be working?". The concertina looked in nice condition externally, but of course we don't know, if it was actually working, if the bellows were sound, if there were air-leaks, if the action was working, whether pads were missing, etc. The maker seems to have been E.C. Henderson in Sydney. He is listed as "musical instrument repairer" in the 1904 Sydney directory, with the address: 73 Glebe Road, Glebe. An later newspaper ad stated a different address: "E.C. Henderson, Piano tuner and Repairer of all kinds of musical instruments. 80 Derwent St, Glebe". There are also several newspaper articles about a concertina player E.C. Henderson, who performed in Sydney and surrounds. I don't know, if this is the same person. I attach some photos here. It would be great, if the purchaser of the instrument could add some images of the action and the reed pans. Maybe with some comments on the concertina's condition? It would be interesting to know, if E.C. Henderson made everything himself? Did he re-purpose Lachenal or Jones concertinas and their actions and reeds to create new instruments under his own name? Have others heard of E.C. Henderson? And is more known about him and his work? Did he make many concertinas? Or am I totally wrong here and it is a totally different maker?

The road to hell is paved with good intentioned

https://www.concertina.net/topic/30172-the-road-to-hell-is-paved-with-good-intentioned/?do=findComment&comment=252756

Uhhh, that is depressing David. I have never seen that before, my condolences. The only failure right at the front end of a clamp I ever saw was a case where the reed maker (lachenal) had filed a square notch out of the reeds tongue (the part which is under the clamp) because the bolt holes in the reed frame had been drilled slightly out of square and the bolt didn't allow space for the tongue. It eventually failed 100 years later.

One arm ,right hand player ?

https://www.concertina.net/topic/30209-one-arm-right-hand-player/?do=findComment&comment=252755

At a guess, maybe 33% less? You still have the bellows and a blank end, but you lose the weight of the second reed pan, action, and buttons. As a two handed player, one advantage I noticed compared to a duet was that I could rest the heavy end with buttons on my thigh while pumping the bellows with the light end. Incidentally I believe you can easily remove the concertina from the box shown in the photo and play it as a standalone acoustic instrument.

Problem with new site Part 2

https://www.concertina.net/topic/30214-problem-with-new-site-part-2/?do=findComment&comment=252754

Google Chrome no longer supports Windows 7.
